Summary: One of the best movies of the summer.
Review: I've been awaiting this film since I first heard it was being produced last summer. The Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland was one of my favorites, so the wait for the movie seemed much longer for me. Gore Verbinski did a great job at directing this film; it didn't follow the Disney formula of blatantly moralizing the movie for the parents and the kids. Then again, this IS Disney's first movie to get a PG-13 rating, so maybe they're lightening up a bit. Anyways, the movie is about a gang of cursed pirates who cannot enjoy life in general because of the curse they're under, and the only way to reverse the curse is by taking the blood of the certain person they're looking for. Orlando Bloom was good as the blacksmith, Will Turner, and his swordfighting skills didn't look fake at all. Johnny Depp was very comical and eccentric at times, but is crucial to the storyline, and not JUST there for comedy relief. Geoffrey Rush did a vicously good job as the menacing Captain Barbossa, who, like his crew, becomes a frightening skeletal figure in the moonlight.
The film borrows MANY scenes from the ride: The attack on the port town, the skeletons, the cave of the cursed treasure, the town that's overrun by drunken pirates, and of course, the song 'Yo Ho Yo Ho A Pirates' Life For Me!', which is sung over 4 times throughout the film. The storyline has a few twists and startling revelations, and its filled with lots of action. The number of deaths in the film is staggering, and the skeletal pirates are very frightening and relentless; they gave no mercy to their enemies when they killed them. There's also a few scenes where you see people's hands get sliced, so those who are squeemish should beware. The special effects by ILM were spectacular; some of their best work yet. And the music was okay, but don't expect nothing memorable like Star Wars or Back to the Future or Jurassic Park's theme music.
And finally,
stay after the end credits. If you wait for all the ending credits to roll by, you'll get treated to a creepy little scene that possibly hints at a sequel. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is easily one of this summer's best movies. Now I can barely wait for Disney's next ride-to-movie conversion: The Haunted Mansion.

Summary: WARNING: DO NOT LEAVE WHEN THE FINAL CREDITS APPEAR!!!
Review: There is another important scene before it completely ends. I stayed to listen to the score and it surprised me. Anyway, this is a terrific film. Johnny Depp steals the show as Captain Jack Swallow. His performance creates a totally endearing character. Orlando Bloom, Geoffrey Rush, Keira Knightly and the rest of the cast are perfect, never striking a false note. This is an extremely difficult film to do in this day and age, where attention spans are short and action sequences only involve CGI. But this film manages to combine action, romance, drama, humor and even a touch of the supernatural, bringing back the swashbuckler with the thrill of one-on-one combat. The photography is beautiful and the music rousing. Disney, you've really done it this time: an unexpected, tongue-in-cheek, suspenseful pirate adventure for our age. Yo, ho, ho, and a bottle of rum!

Review: Best movie of the summer. I saw it on the first day it came out. WOW! See it today. Johnny Depp(Nick Of Time) is magnificent and funny, Orlando Bloom(The Lord of the Rings Series) is great, and Geoffrey Rush(Mystery Men) is cool! You will love these actors and this movie. It's funny and scary! So see it today if you haven't.

Rated: PG-13 for Adventure/Action Violence.

Running Time: 2 Hours and 30 Minutes.

Summary: Great adventure plus pirates!
Review: Pirates of the Caribbean is a non-stop thrill ride with great sword fights, good special effects, witty dialogue, and Johnny Depp in eyeliner.

Johnny Depp steals the show with his hilarious delivery, and Orlando Bloom is decent as the straight man. But more importantly, the movie is fun and exciting and ridiculous and everything a ghost pirate movie based on a Disney ride should be.

Summary: Good action, funny movie
Review: Saw this a few days ago and it was awesome. I dont have a particular taste for movies set a long time ago BUT this is somethin you'll like to see when you have the time. The character played by Depp was hilarious in some scenes with a somewhat smart-alec, never sober personality. 5 stars,
"Bravo Zulu" on an outstanding movie.

Summary: Highly enjoyable romp slightly overstays welcome
Review: This is one of those over-the-top kinds of movies where everyone is having such a good time being silly that the audience just gets caught up in the fun. Yes, this is a lavish, spectacle filled Pirate movie with lots of fights, cannons exploding, etc, but the true joy is in smaller-scale stuff, particularly in the delightful performances.

Johnny Depp has been rightfully praised for his work here. It's not quite like anything he's done before, such a high-profile leading role, but he clearly relishes the part. It's a quirky, high-energy, almost "spastic" performance, but it makes his Jack Sparrow (a seemingly ineffective but ultimately exceedingly effective pirate) a pure delight. Adults will enjoy his lasciviousness and clever asides...kids in the theater I saw it in were delighted with his physical antics. It may be his loosest, most effective performance since ED WOOD.

Orlando Bloom continues to add to his "matinee idol" appeal with a dark haired action hero to compliment Legolas' blonde locks. He's an appealing young man, with a good sense of comic timing.

Kiera Knightley is properly "spunky" in a somewhat underwritten role. It's hard to say yet if her appeal will last, but she certainly was good in BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM, so I have high hopes.

Geoffrey Rush is nice and creepy as the villian, Captain Barbossa. He is such a ham and he gets to do basically a comic turn on his role in QUILLS (with, thankfully, no nudity!)

There are lots of fun comic moments, such as one pirate with an ill-fitting wooden eye, a funny duel in a blacksmith's shop, etc. Also, the special effects are really first rate. The dread pirates are undead, and when moonlight strikes them, we seem them as skeletons. It's very cool watching them fight in and out of moonbeams, where they seemlessly change from flesh & blood to bone. COOL!!!

The movie is 134 minutes long. I would say it is about 15 minutes TOO long. Some of the fight scenes drag on just a bit, and the movie starts to feel just a little flaccid towards the end. My 10 year old, who loved it, got sleepy anyway.

This is a minor quibble, though. The movie was much better than the trailers promised. It was truly a pleasant surprise. The PG-13 rating is appropriate, but the violence is fairly cartoonish, and the gore is minimal.

Summary: A Pretty Good Flick
Review: I took Bessie and a couple of my kids from an earlier mistake to see this Disney film. We'd (Old Bess and I) been on the ride at Disney and I'd also read the reviews of this movie and must admit, I was pretty excited about seeing it (I even smuggled a container of caribbean joy juice into the theater). "Pirates of the Caribbean" is a very entertaining movie.

Johnny Depp is terrific as the fey Capt Jack Somethingoranother and Keira Knightley is a very hot number as the heroine/lady in distress. The casting is perfect with that strange piano playing bird from the "Shine" movie playing a mutinous villain and some putative pre-teen hearthrob (Orlando Bloom) playing the blacksmith-swordfighting hero. I must say, Depp steals the show. His prancing about and amusing facial expressions along with his laid back delivery of some well written lines kept me entertained throughout (and don't forget, the lady in distress is really really really pleasing on the eyeballs).

This is a funny movie. Really. There's a monkey (always funny), lots of pirates (at least one of whom is darn near hilarious), a lady in distress (who is yowsa bowsa hot hot hot), a hero (Bessie was smitten with the boy), and Johnny Depp really was good (I mean Eddie Scissorsforhands good!). It may have been the caribbean joy juice, but I really enjoyed this flick. Lots of action--dueling, cannoballs upside skeletons' hayids, cliffjumping, swords, swords, swords, and swords. Good time entertainment for everyone and highly recommended. One small complaint is that a lot of fighting involves the ghost crew who can't be killed (they've been cursed, you see). And that kinda seems like a waste of time. Of course, it wouldn't make for much of an action movie otherwise. Nevertheless, Depp is so good and Knightley so hot, this one shouldn't be missed. Really. HHD.

Summary: A Great Summer Movie!!!
Review: Yo ho, yo ho, there's a new frontrunner in the race for the best movie of the summer. Disney topped itself as Pirates outshines Finding Nemo and marks a landmark film for the company, it's their first PG-13 release. The plot is full of sub-plots each interesting in its own regard and for a 2 1/2 hour movie there is not a boring moment. Johnny Depp shines as Captain Jack Sparrow, a pirate combination of Captain Morgan and Kieth Richards. The special effects are amazing as the cursed crew of the Black Pearl change into skeletal remains beneath the moonlight, they even change back and forth instantly merely walking by windows or under holes in caves. Director Gore Verbinski blends dry humor and action seamlessly and producer Jerry Bruckhiemer brings us the typical, yet amazingly fun action his movies are recognized for. Drink up me' earties, yo ho, the pirates be on a rampage this summer.

Summary: mediocre very disney
Review: I just saw the movie at the theatres. The action and plot were very good, yet very unoriginal. There was some action with explosions and swordfighting. The skeletons were the only terrorifying part of it and it wasn't that bad. This movie also has sound effects that are mediocre. Those effects can't compare to that of other great movie with amazing sound effects. The movie was also very disney. Even though there was a lot of action, the movie stayed away from blood, gore, sex, and language (elements that make a good action movie). It had a very romantic fairy tale disney type ending
