Summary: action to the extreme!
Review: This is a great movie that captures all the emotions and action of the Civil War. The book, was also very good. All the actors played their parts wonderfully. It is a movie worthy os seeing again and again.

Summary: Great Movie
Review: As a Civil War buff, Confederate reenactor, and history major I loved the movie. While there were some very minor problems with it, like any movie, it did capture the esseance of Gettysburg. I will agree that Sheen could have done a little better job with Lee. But still everyone should see!!!!!

Summary: Dear Amazon - Uphold your own guidelines, please.
Review: First of all, this is not a review of "Gettysburg." It's a review of these reviews! Some of them are just plain rude. Expressions like "get a brain" and "duh" are patently offensive "spiteful remarks" even if they are not obscene. Some of the contributors here are incapable of civil disagreement and have made angry remarks that are based on straw man misreadings of reviews and general paranoid fantasies. While the right to be stupid and inarticulate may be protected by the Constitution, your own guidelines are not being followed. I would hope you'd glean some of the garbage out of this.

Summary: This film puts us close to the heart of CW battle action.
Review: When I first saw R. Maxwell's GETTYSBURG, it was first run, and the theatre was full to capacity. Most in attendance were re-enactors or historians like myself. Although the film propagandizes to a degree, GETTYSBURG explores the energies that drove both sides during the three-day ordeal in and near Gettysburg, PA, in July, 1863. The Civil War was fought heart to heart as well as hand to hand, and this film's strength-- like M. Shaara's novel, THE KILLER ANGELS, on which it is based-- is its heart. GETTYSBURG might have its greatest fans among history buffs, but it remains an American story worth seeing and seeing again. Show this film to your children. Unless we understand the terror that war is, we will be forever bound to re-engage.

Summary: One of the best movies of all time!!!!
Review: Those of you who didn't care for this film have no taste. This movie should be an epic. To the person from New York who only gave it 2 stars, get a brain. Who knows what was said and who did what. Everyone there was scared to death and didn't have schooling like we have today. I have been in combat situations and I don't know anyone who has speaks eloquently under fire. In combat there is no room for "dialogue" everything is strait forward and to the point, not to mention after a full day of marching or fighting do think anyone wwould be in the mood to have a conversation. So before you go bad mouthing a film, think about the situation and how you would have reacted. And try marching all day and see if you are in the mood to talk!

Summary: Simply the best!!
Review: I have seen this movie at least 15 times. I have read the book The Killer Angels and the book followed it well. Loved the music and bought the CD as well. Finally visited Gettysburg. It was both an awesome and somber experience.

Highly recommend this movie.

Summary: A True Classic
Review: For me, a good movie is not one that only entertains, but also educates. This movie really started to pique my interest in the Civil War and I don't think I can ever get tired of watching it. I really believe Jeff Daniels should've been nominated for an oscar for his portrayal as Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain.

Summary: THIS MOVIE WAS GREAT!!!!!!
Review: I must have seen this movie 100 times! It is so real that it makes the battle come alive again. The two highlights of the movie are Chamberlain's stand on Little Round Top and Pickett's Charge. If only they had a movie this great for every battle of the Civil War!

Summary: GREAT picture!
Review: This film was quite possibly the most poignant, moving, and yet strangely unnerving rendition of the Civil War's most famous battle I have ever seen. It's most redeeming characteristic by far is that it depicts the battle from both sides...and leaves the viewer rooting for both. I admired Lee's wisdom, Longstreet's fire, Chamberlain's determination, and especially Hancock's gruff geniality. The scene where Chamberlain leads his brigade in a last-ditch charge down Little Round Top is one of the best I have seen; along with Pickett's reply to Lee after the famous charge, when Lee instructs him to regroup his division: "General Lee...I HAVE no division." The acting and directing are both superb; this film is truly one for the ages.

Summary: Excellent intro to the Civil War
Review: My son became obsessed with the Civil War because of this movie. We recently visited Gettysburg and the movie is an excellent way to introduce this historic event to an interested child. I recently read the book The Killer Angels and note that the screenwriter didn't have too difficult a task as the screen play is almost word for word from the book.

The acting is excellent, save for Martin Sheen as Lee. Sheen's Lee comes off as semi-insane. I have come to realize that the book does not treat Lee in that fashion and I attribute Sheen's poor performance to the possibility that he doesn't have it in his background to successfully pull off a great military leader.
