Summary: Terrific recreation of GETTYSBURG
Review: This movie captured my interestin the Civil War. it brought the battel of Gettysburg to the screen in a way the nobody else could bring it. It was well written and acted by Martin Sheen and Tom Berenger. It is indeed a good movie.

Summary: A disappointment
Review: "Gettysburg" is the longest movie I've ever even heard of. What were these people thinking? The music is annoying (as it is played on and on throughout the film), but sometimes the cinematography redeems itself momentarily (C'mon, I mean it's over four hours - it has to eventually, right?). This movie fails on the emotional scale, and most of the acting is poor, in my opinion. Who the heck cast C. Thomas Howell for crying out loud. My favorite character (Whom I feel was the best performance in the movie, and I would go so far to say the best thing in the movie) was Stephen Lang's performance as Major General George E. Pickett. Another thing on which I have complaints is Martin Sheen as General Robert E. Lee - what's going on there? I mean, was Ted Turner himself in charge of that? The accents were horrible. Jeff Bridges' beard looked like glued on painted hay or something. I know I'm just rambling now, but I just wanted everyone to know this isn't a good movie, if you don't already. And you people who do, help me out here, please. Other people need to know this.

Summary: Superbly done, a fine rendetion of a Shaara's Pulitzer novel
Review: This film, more than any other I've seen brings out the unfolding events of Gettysburg and the thoughts of those that participated. It is artfully directed, brilliantly scored, and very loyal to Mike Shaara's deeply researched Killer Angels. One feels that they are actually witnessing this moment in time and listening to the real combatants. A great piece of Americana.

Summary: Gettysburg's glaring historical inaccuracies are forgivable.
Review: Did you know there was a third Chamberlain brother, John present at the battle? He doesn't show up anywhere.

The movie makes the stand of the 20th Maine seem as though the regiment fought together...it didn't. Company B was sent across a ravine in hopes of catching the confederates in a cross fire. There, Company B laid low all day. Late in the day however, Chamberlain ordered his celebrated charge down the hill. As his main (pardon the pun), body charged down the hill at the bewildered rebs, Company B, presented themselves and caught the fleeing confederates in a murderous cross fire. That is not depicted in the film and is a huge omission. Also, the 20th Maine had a lot of help from the 83rd Pennsylvania, 44th New York and 12th New York regiments. The 20th Maine was run off their position several times during the day only to regain the position with the help of the rest of their brigade. The film depicts them as "standing steadfast" all day...not true.

Also, during Pickett's Charge, the confederates broke the Union line in a few places, where it was touch and go for a while. However, the movie makes it seem as though the rebs were swallowed up by the Union line -- not completely accurate.

A total of three women appear in the film, standing by the roadside as a regiment passes. But women were busy helping with the wounded right from the start and contributed greatly to the cause.

There are other omissions and shortcuts, but they should not take away from your enjoyment of this film. Without a doubt, Gettysburg is the benchmark of Civil War films, however, it should be viewed AFTER reading Michael Shaara's, "The Killer Angels"

Review: i know glean is a word, but just use clean like the rest of the world, it even rhymes with glean, so it won't offend your sensitive literary soul.

Summary: One of the best....
Review: The best Gettysburg movie and probably one of the best Civil War movies made to date. From absolutely the BEST book on the subject. If you liked the movie, read the book at least once.

Summary: An excellent, emotionally "charged" depiction of the Battle
Review: Soldiers laying it on the line for what they believed in...so we all could live free... This movie is a visual memorial to all those who died, and to those who lived to pass on the legacy of the "true" price of freedom. Thank you Mr. Maxwell for bringing it to so many people's attention.

Summary: An inspiring film, showed the battle greatly.
Review: I saw this film for extra credit, and am glad I got to see it. The film showed the Civil War's bloodiest battle through both Confederate and Union perspectives. Before I saw it I was definitely for the Union, but I began to see the other side, I was almost wanting the confederacy to win. A truly great film both educational and entertaining.

Summary: My favorite movie!
Review: When I first rented this movie from a local video store I was truly amazed. Now I have bought the movie and watch it almost everyday. I wasn't really a Civil War Buff then. Gettysburg has brought me to want to learn as much as I can about the Civil War. The acting was truly wonderful. The part on Little Round Top overwhelmed me. Colonel Joshuwa Lawrence Chamberlain (Jeff Daniels) was truly the hero of the Union Army that 2nd Day of battle.
