Summary: UK Version 1000 times better
Review: I'm waiting anxiously for the Live action version of this classic. This is my ALL TIME FAVORIE Animated Movie EVER!!! I was so dissapointed at what a horrible release to DVD this was. Not only was the packaging the same crappy kiddie fare artwork as the old VHS.. but the Quality was just horrible. I shall surely be buying the UK release with all its glorious extras and and widescreen format and beautiul artwork. This US release should be an embarasment for all animation and Last Unicorn fans.

Summary: Horrible quality. Believe it.
Review: Well, unlike the people that read the reviews about "horrible quality" and bought it anyways, I'm here because of the horrible quality lol. I got this DVD in through netflix and it did indeed look awful. However, the DVD was quite scratched so I thought maybe... just maybe... because it was such consistent scratching over the whole DVD, it was just that and I'd get a newer copy. So, here I am after a google search for "last unicorn" AND "poor quality" AND DVD. So, apparantly it just does suck that bad lol. Oh well.

Anyways, believe it. I thought I was watching a worn out VHS copy of the film. Poor indeed. A crying shame :(

Summary: Why does Germany get all the good stuff?
Review: I just received my copy of "The Last Unicorn" from Amazon.de. Wow!! I've never seen this piece of animation look so sharp. Or in widescreen! The transfer looks a bit grainy to me, but that in no way detracts from the film. As a matter of fact, it adds to the slightly somber mood of the film. No artifacting, brilliant color and crisp sound all bring this 20-year old feature back to life. Concorde Films has done a wonderful job of bringing this to DVD.

I havn't seen the travesty that is the US version, but I did see the original trailer, which is presented on the German edition. It's dark, grainy, muddy, full of dirt and color changes. The sound is awful. If the entire US presentation is like that, then shame on Carlton for even thinking of presenting it like that. What's the matter, were they to cheap to buy the good copy?

If you have a DVD player capable of playing region 2 PAL DVDs, get the one from Amazon.de, or Amazon.co.uk (which has less "special" features) but is supposed to be just as nice in the presentation. It costs more with shipping, but is worth it.

I'll add this to my collection of German imports (Secret of Nimh, Balto...) which are far, far superior to the US releases.

Summary: What a terrible dvd of such a great movie!
Review: I adore this movie. the animation is wonderful, the story poignant, but the dvd was terrible! They obviously hadn't touched up the old VHS at all. The picture has lots of holes and spots. I like the fullscreen format personally, but I know many people would have liked the option of widescreen. If their are bonus features like the box claims I can't find them. Overall, you will probably be better off with the VHS, which had a better picture.

Summary: Wonderful movie, but terrible DVD
Review: "The Last Unicorn" is one of my favorite childhood movies, and the movie itself certainly deserves 5 stars. However, the DVD version is so poor, quality-wise, that I cannot recommend it. I read the reviews here at Amazon before purchasing it, but I thought surely it couldn't be as bad as everyone was making out. I'm no DVD expert, so I thought perhaps it was only DVD aficionados who were upset. However, I was mistaken. It really is terrible. All I care about is having a nice, clear picture, and this print is dark, dirty, and flickers strangely throughout the film. It's a shameful way to treat a wonderful movie. I only hope that it will be re-released properly at some point!

Summary: DVD features? Where?
Review: Although I waited for the DVD release of this movie primarily for the archival quality of DVDs, I did expect there to be SOME special features included with the disc.

The quality of the movie itself did not bother me, since I have only been able to view it from VHS tapes. However, I know the movie did not exist in a vacuum and so I am left to wonder where any additional interviews, footage or commentary may be wandering.

I still love the movie, and if you haven't seen it, you must think unicorns are for wussies.

Summary: Great movie, disappointing DVD!
Review: for one thing, this is truly one of my top 110 favorite movies of all time and i did bought it on DVD to replace my VHS version.

One problem with this DVD is that it's the same transfer like the VHS version, fullscreen and no extras, not even a trailer. But that's alright that i've got it on DVD, maybe next year when the live-action version comes out there should be a special 2-disc special edition DVD with extras including widescreen, remastered picture and sound, audio commentary by TLU creator Peter S. Beagle, a better cover like in glow-in-the-dark style, Trailer, German Trailer, a Easter Egg, Radio Spots, TV Spots, Advertising Gallery, interviews with Peter S. Beagle and Jeff Bridges with Christopher Lee and a sneak preview at the remake.

Summary: Beautiful and rare animation
Review: The last unicorn is one of my all time favourite movies ever. It was a precious piece of my child hood along with flight of dragons, labyrinth and the dark crystal. They just dont make them like they used to do they lol but it's worth having on dvd. However if your going to purchase this movie on dvd i strongly suggest you buy a region 2. I live in England and the region 2 version is much better the colours work and flow and it's widescreen edition. You may think this is no big deal but i assure the region 2 version is better then the region 1 however this film is wonderful and worth owning no matter what. I also recomend the novel which the cartoon followed perfectly. This film is a rare find and belongs to a small yet enchanting genre that it appeals to everyone despite their age. Worth buying and espcially for unicorn or myth fans who like this sort of subject you'll love it!

Summary: Shame on you Artisan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Review: Artisan Entertainment has put out some beautiful DVDs in the past. The new T2 Extreme and Stargate Director's Cut are just a couple. This pan and scan release of The Last Unicorn is a true travesty. I have never seen a worse picture in my life on a DVD. Yes, it's that bad. Shame on you Artisan, F.H.E., Carlton, and whoever else had anything to do with this DVD. This is a classic, beloved movie and it deserves so much better than this.

Summary: Beware--G rating but there is some mild swearing, sexuality
Review: Unlike many reviewers, I don't have a problem with the quality of the DVD. We thought it was a beautiful animation and the storyline is very captivating. However, I only gave it 2 stars because I feel that the G rating could be very misleading to families with young children. I thought "G" meant for all audiences, but I would say this is more of a "PG":
"damn" and "hell" are used several times in The Last Unicorn. There is a scene where the unicorn is transformed into a girl. She is unclothed at first, but her very long hair manages to cover most of her quite well ala Lady Godiva, so this didn't bother me too much. However, there is another scene where a tree transforms into a woman with a nearly bare and overflowing bosom that she presses the magician's face between quite inappropriately. Please know that I am not a prude by any means, but I was shocked to find these things in a "G" rated film. I do try to avoid these types of things with my younger children (6 and 3 year olds). A "PG" rating would have definitely given me a heads up. I hope this information will help the next person with young children make a more informed choice when purchasing. Also, there are some very scary scenes with the Red Bull, but nothing we haven't seen before in Disney films such as Sleeping Beauty. However, I thought I'd mention it, just in case you have a child sensitive to these types of things. All in all, it is a good DVD. My problem with it lies in the "G" rating that it carries.
