Summary: The book is always better, but the movie had some moments.
Review: Timeline is destined to be one of those movies that if seen, will be a cult classic. I sat through it in a theatre and didn't want to miss a moment, but there was definitely a weak script and some awful acting mostly by Paul Walker. Handsome as he is, he either was not given much direction or he's just in the wrong business. I cannot figure out why he was given top billing when Gerard Butler clearly carried the pic. Butler was the bright spot and the only person in the cast that seemed to truly be enjoying himself playing his character to the hilt. The concept of the story is creative, following that thread was sometimes tricky, but that's why movies don't always paint as clear a picture as the book. Timeline would have had to have been at least an hour longer to have run more smoothly. Along the way, some of the characters that started out on top just got lost. I love Billy Connelly, but his character sort of faded away. It was nice to see him on screen again with Butler though, since they performed as brothers in Mrs. Brown. The action and scenery were enjoyable. The dastardly characters were quite that, although they were played in an almost Pythoesque manner. There are funny bits and sad bits and sweet bits and since it's all meant for entertainment, isn't that what we want? I will definitely rent this and maybe even buy it. Gerard Butler's performance alone is worth that and then some.

Summary: Timeline: Not So Fine....after all
Review: What can I say about Timeline that others have already COMPLAINED about? I thought that Timeline was a decent movie, not the best, but I've seen better and worse. The movie itself should of had more action, better script, and the infamous jousting scene from the novel.

Why pick on Paul Walker? He was NOT the ONLY actor in the movie, people. I admit that Paul Walker is basically the "blonde haired, blue eyed Keanu Reeves". It seems that they basically learned "acting" together. This movie was not his best. I have a feeling that he will redeem himself as an actor like Keanu Reeves did in the Matrix flicks. Give him a chance. I will.

Timeline is worth renting, perhaps buying. I don't recommend sitting in the theaters for it though.

Summary: Another Bad Adaptation, with a Side of Bad Casting please...
Review: I was intrigued by the story and even the promos for this movie, which in retrospect seems to my problem with a number of movies. I expect talent, smart writing, good direction and scenes that actually make some sense. The only talent in this film was the wonderful Gerard Butler. The writer however, should be taken out and shot, or better yet, forced to watch the dribble he calls writing. As a writer myself, I found myself uncontrollably wanting to gouge out my own eyes to stop the stupidity. If it weren't for the talented Mr. Butler, I probably would have made my own crusade to Hollywood just to smack some sense into these people. Mr. Crichton, you're a talented and awesome writer, why do you allow these hacks to continue to destroy your work? With some so-so fight scenes and 1 or 2 good catch phrases, I didn't see why anyone wouldn't force the manager of the theatre to return their hard earned money. Lastly, will someone PLEASE tell Paul Walker he CAN'T ACT TO SAVE HIS LIFE... His portrayal was so mind numbingly boring, I actually pictured my dog hacking things up to pass the time. Save your money, and wait until Gerard Butler's next movie comes out, you'll have a far better time.

Summary: There is a lesson to be learned
Review: Apart from great camera shots and one epic battle at the end of the movie this really has nothing to offer. The cast made up of those actors that aren't unknowns but are not nessicarily in the limelight either do the best with what they have.

They try really hard but in the end their best efforts cannot fight

A. A bad book adaptation
B. A poor script
C. Hamy acting

Not you are probably guessing that I didn't like the movie all that much, well you're not far off but I did like it in at least two aspects.

1. Whatever my problems with the movie the musical score is not one of them, they did a fantastic job.

2. I am a history major and there is one part where "Merick" is explianing to "Chris" why history is so vital. That is to say why it is so essential to remember where we came from, in fact I will probably buy the movie just to have that line. It was a wonderfully bright part in an otherwise dull script.

Overall-Not really tha awful, this movie just didn't use what it had to its full potential

Summary: An exciting movie!
Review: It was OK. It was exciting especially the siege, but not really close to one of the best movies of the year.

Summary: A Good Rental
Review: Chris Hughes (Paul Walker) is stunned to find out that his father, a highly respected archaeologist, has mysteriously written a message in 1357 AD. Professor Hughes went to get some answers from ITC, the corporate sponsor for his latest dig, and never came back. After Chris confronts ITC, he discovers that his father was sent back in time through a wormhole that was accidentally discovered linking Castlegard, France in 1357 AD and the present day. But something went wrong and the professor's companion was killed. Unsure of what happened to Chris' father, ITC is ready to send back a small group of archaeology students to rescue him and to try and discover why the wormhole exists at all.

Chris sets out to find his father with a security expert sent to kill someone in the past, two bodyguards, who end up dead shortly after the shift, Kate Erickson (Frances O'Connor), whom he is in love with, Andre Marek (Gerard Butler), and another French archaeology student. Much to their chagrin, the students have arrived on the same day as a horrific battle between the English and the French over the Castlegard fortress. They all know the history, but find themselves unwittingly changing the past as they get involved in the lives of those who lived at that time...

This was a decent movie, nothing spectacular, but not one of those movies that you cannot admit that you paid money to see. Paul Walker definitely didn't fit into the film and there was no real effort to explain his mannerisms and accent other than the fact that he spent a year in Kentucky - hello? do they think that a California surfer dude accent is similar? Anyway, Walker did fine in the film aside from a few awkward moments and looking pretty silly in those baggy hose that they favored in the middle ages, but Gerard Butler really stole the show. He was perfect for his role and really outshone his costars. The action sequences were pretty good, but nothing outstanding. Really, that could be the summation of the whole film: good, but nothing outstanding. Wait for it to come out on DVD, its cheaper that way.

Summary: Timeline- go to an alternate universe, and don't see it
Review: If you're thinking about seeing the movie 'Timeline', follow the following procedures.

A. If you've read the book, don't see it, you will be terribly disppointed at the storyline and the machinery. Lack of detail and explaination about technology and the past will make this movie seem so long you'll wonder why you didn't buy a large popcorn.

B.If you haven't read the book, go read the book, then see item 'A'.

Summary: doen't entertain
Review: This movie is just awful. who'd want to watch this crap when there are much better movies like the last samurai or gladiator. It just doen't entertain me. A cheesy plot, bad acting, and the worst battle sequences doesn't do much in these days.

Summary: Fans of Crichton Comfortable; Newbies Confused
Review: For anyone who dreams of traveling back in time and seeing medieval knights, the movie Timeline is right up your alley. But if you're expecting a deep plot and brilliant screen acting, you'd be better off watching The Lord of the Rings trilogy based on J. R. R. Tolkein's masterpiece work. However, Timeline's author is no amateur either. Michael Crichton is the bestseller author of more than fifteen novels that have been adapted to the movie screen: including Jurassic Park, Congo, Twister, and The Andromeda Strain. He is also the writer of the popular television series ER.

The basic gist of the story revolves around a group of student archeologists uncovering the ruins of a French castle. They discover a 600-year-old document in a sealed tomb with Professor Johnston's (Billy Connolly) handwriting on it. This is puzzling because they are the first people in the tomb since its sealing centuries before. The Professor, who recently left to visit their sponsor in New Mexico, has somehow traveled back in time to the 14th century. Chris (Paul Walker), the Professor's son, leads the students on an investigation that takes them halfway across the world and 600 years back in time. Dodging English knights and trying not to screw up the timeline, the group races against the clock to save the missing Professor and escape the fate of imprisonment in 14th century France.

Timeline disappoints fans of the well-established director Richard Donner (best known for the Superman series, Lethal Weapon series, and my personal favorite The Goonies). Two major flaws by Donner cause this film to falter. His first mistake originates from the choice of the source text. Timeline's story proves too difficult for the accomplished director to adapt to the movie screen. Michael Crichton's 600-page novel takes the time to delve into the science behind time travel, while the two-hour movie rushes it along with no explanation. Unlike Timeline, The Lord of the Rings is able to make the adjustment from book to movie only because it is broken into three separate three hour films.

It is this attention to detail that accomplishes the book and the lack thereof that devastates the movie. Because I am a fan of the novel and I already know the minutiae of the story, it's easier for me to enjoy the action while ignoring the hasty plot. Those unfamiliar with the tale will find the weak explanation given by the movie of 'How you can fax a person back in time' unbelievable.

The second flaw of the directing results from poor casting. Paul Walker's teen roles in Varsity Blues and 2 Fast and 2 Furious suit him well, but his pop star persona clashes with the scholarly archeological setting in France. Billy Connolly gives a believable performance, but his brief role is unable to salvage the weak lead role.

Despite the flaws, I enjoyed it. Being a fan of Michael Crichton, I have been looking forward to the film for the last couple of years and regardless of Paul Walker's acting, the movie was worth the money I paid to see it, although non-fans might be disappointed.

Summary: This Movie Rocks!
Review: I felt this movie was highly entertaining. I thought it was great, I just wish there had been a little more action in it. This is also not a movie for the faint of heart. There are several sad and moving scenes within, but ultimately this was a great movie and I am surprised that it's not doing better at the Box Office.
