Summary: A Childhood Masterpiece
Review: I can remember back years ago when I was about 10 I first saw this movie while I was sick at home. I know it seems a bit ironic (it matches the setting of the film pretty well). This movie really moved me then, and it has left a mark that makes me still smile when I remenisce.The plot generally follows a medieval/fantasy love story, but it is masterfully integrated with touches of humor at all the right points. Anyone with children between 7-12 should definately buy this DVD or otherwise try to get a hold of a copy of this movie. This film is perfectly focused on kids at that age, it's humor subtly goes along with the childhood psychi. Even adults will find themselves smiling at the interplay between the grandfather and the young sick-at-home child. The humor only opens up the oppertunity for the true theme of eternal love to be accepted by the audience. All in all this is a memorable romp through a fantastical and touching world. The humor allows for children of all ages (even grown-up children) to become immersed in story. This movie also portrays a touching theme, that we can all gain something from.

Review: Brilliant! I love this film! DVD could have had more extras, and special booklet was slightly disappointing, but still, the film itself more than makes up for it!

Review: Generally when a director tries to parody a genre they go all out. In instances like this you generally end up with a slapstick comedy much like scary movie or airplane. [read as: bad, or good] :) What rob reiner does here is quite impressive in that he manages to parody a style of movie, while at the same time romanticizing [sic] it so much that you the viewer are pulled into it anyways. The story is simple enough at it's barest. Love is found, love is lost, love is reclaimed at any cost. Featuring a wide range of characters, the cast is headed by elwes as the dashing hero, and he works the part perfectly, as does his female lead, robin wright penn. The chemistry the two share aids the believeability of the romance the characters are meant to share. The supporting cast is fabulous, in particular Mandy Patinkin as Inigo Montoya the spanish swordsman, out to avenge his fathers death. Overall the movie is fabulous, great for all ages old and young alike. The princess Bride is one of the few movies that everyone in the family, from the children, to the teenagers, to the adults can enjoy together which is quite a rarity. The dvd looks fine and sounds fine, but sadly there are no extras except a trailer. A making of or a commentary track would have pushed this to a 5 star review, but alas, it is still a very worthy purchase in my book.

Summary: The Princess Bride defines the term "Timeless Classic"
Review: How could anyone watch this film only once? "The Princess Bride" is a Wondeful, Funny, Romantic Adventure movie that combines nearly every imaginable "Fantasy" scenario a Child or Adult could "Wish" for! That's right...I said Adult--You'll love this movie, too (having children around is a great Excuse to watch the movie, but isn't necessary). A "Farm Boy" turns...well, I can't tell you that, now can I ? There are many fascinating characters that you will not ever forget: A Spaniard, in search of the man who killed his father, a Giant, an Egocentric little man with Big Ambitions, a Wizard (played by Billy Crystal!), a Beautiful Princess....and "The Dread Pirate Roberts." This film contains unforgetable scenes, that many of my friends love to repeat (especially people who are into Role-Playing Games--In fact, in one RPG group I have been involved-with, you get Bonus Points if you somehow manage to work a line or two from "The Princess Bride" into your character's communications with other PC's!). The way the Grandfather (Peter Falk) tells the story to the young boy (Fred Savage) is truly charming. Let's face it, to eccentric people, this movie is pure Gold. Children love the movie, because it is such a fascinating adventure story, with Sword-Play and funny scenarios, but Adults love the movie because of the intricate Word-Play and....ok, because they are Big Kids, at heart. There, I said it. If you are a Big Kid, with a Little Kid, this movie is your new best friend! I must say, Cary Elwes ("Farm Boy") is Astounding! If you loved him in "Men In Tights," you will fall on the floor, laughing, when you watch "The Princess Bride!" (Note: keep your VCR remote handy, because you will rewind scenes and watch them twice!)

Review: I showed this movie to my first graders (in three parts) at our holiday party and they loved it. It has just enough action, humor, and a bit of a love story to keep their attention. Oh yes, and one curse, "you son of a bitch". It is a great movie.

Summary: My favorite movie- hands down!
Review: I was in a video store looking for something to rent when I saw the newly released "Princess Bride" on the shelf. I knew nothing about the movie except for a magazine snippet about the main swordfight outlasting the one in Errol Flynn's "Robin Hood". (Such thin threads!) I took the movie home and watched it 5 times straight through (not an exaggeration). This movie is in a word- CHARMING. Is it the best movie ever made? No. Did it have problems in editing, make-up, dialogue and other places the critics are so quick to point out? Yes, but I am of the mind you should find out things for yourself- research, but make your own decision. This is a beautiful love story, told in such a way that it is a completely unbeleivable fantasy and a totally credible account all at the same time. It is one of those kind of movies you need to watch to understand. I was fortunate enough to see this movie on the big screen at college several years after first watching it on video. It was fun to sit in a room of people who knew the movie inside and out, and could quote the dialogue along with the characters. (It was like a live showing of "Rocky Horror Picture Show"- which I also recommend.) We cheered for the good guys, whistled at the Princess and booed the Prince and the Count- and you almost expected the people on the screen to react to you. That is only part of the charm of this movie- that it draws you in to the point you feel that you are part of the action. They say a picture is worth a thousand words- this is no exception. A written review cannot possibly tell how good or bad something is- you should always find out for yourself. One last thing- do read the book. I like the movie plot better, but the book does fill holes in the story line, which makes the movie that much better the next time you watch it. If you want a recommendation, you have it from me.

Summary: A Classic Fantasy-Adventure Parody!
Review: This movie is a must have for anyone who enjoys sarcastic comedy. Playing off of the action-fantasy genre, The Princess Bride will keep you laughing. I'm willing to bet you will be quoting the movie before long, and someone will say... "Hey, I LOVE that movie!" The cast is amazing too, which they don't usually mention in the descriptions. In addition to Cary Elwes, it has Billy Crystal, Andre the Giant, Mandy Patinkin, and numerous other recognizable comedians and actors. You won't regret buying this movie, especially at this price!

Summary: A favorite since childhood
Review: This has been my favorite movie since I was just a kid. The cast is perfect, and although I can recite it line for line with the charachters, the highs and lowes still leave me giddy with joy and crying with the unfairness of it all. This is a movie I have never gotten tired of watching. The only thing (slightley)better is reading the classis book by William Golman.

Summary: Immature.
Review: By which I mean that Mr. Reiner, at this stage of his career, was still somewhat naive enough to think he was blazing a new trail with this material. But tongue-in-cheek swashbucklers have been around since the Silent Era, and a serious movie-buff will not see anything that hasn't been done better before. (*Raiders Of The Lost Ark* made earlier in the decade is just for starters.) The fact that the movie seems pitched to adults as much as to children doesn't absolve it from unoriginality . . . and in any case, rest assured that there's nothing TOO "grown-up" going here, nothing that would really fly over the kids' heads, at any rate. The immaturity also shows in the directing style, which was doubtless formed from the director's situation-comedy background: stagey sets, relentless close-ups, so forth. Even worse, Reiner insists on framing the story with a modern-day Grandpaw, READING the story to his grandson who's in bed with a cold (another device straight from TV-Land -- bet on it, Grandpaw will eventually smile, turn out the light, and close the door). There are several problems, here: first, Peter Falk's makeup (why didn't Reiner just hire an older actor?); second, he's reading to the kid what we're already witnessing; third, the story keeps getting interrupted by the sudden shifts away from the fantasy world and back to the prosaic modern day (very annoying -- halfway through, one starts sitting on the edge of his seat, waiting for the next interruption. Not the way to tell a story). Oh . . . and "don't get me stahted" on Billy Crystal's "comic" cameo. . . . Okay, so I'm being a little harsh. I just felt that, considering the almost hysterical partiality some have for this "cult" classic, a correction was long overdue.
