Summary: EXPANDED Edition???
Review: (Original movie itself I would give 5 stars easy)
I like others was very excited about aquiring the DVD version of one of my favorite movies of all time. But I just can't understand why so many DVDs are destroying a good thing. I have only great things to say about the theatrical release. I have seen the VHS so many dozens of times that I know this film backwards and forwards, know every line, every piece of beutiful score, and wonderfully shot scene. So I feel it is a travesty to see some of my favorite lines of dialogue edited out. I mean I thought that I might be seeing MORE of what I loved not less! I have nothing against previously unrelesed footage. But don't touch the substance of what we all remember and love from the original.
I also have a problem with the way the score was redone with this DVD version. It just didn't seem thought out at all, forced rather. And the fact that they took out the soulfull Clannad piece (the only vocal song on the Soundtrack) near the end is just unforgivable.
As far as I could see most of the new footage was mostly battle sequences. And, yes, those are spectacular and impressive scenes, obviously costly and time consuming. But to me 30 (give or take) more seconds added to the "Seige of Fort Henry" are not compensatory for scrapping a several lines of dialogue in another scene.
After scrutinizing the "Director's Edition" I can say that I think that the editors did a better job themselves with the theatrical release. Some of what was put back in was just as well to be left on the cutting room floor. (Possibly with the exception of the final scene - "Last of the Mohicans"). Still I can see why they made the choices they did.
As far as why they relesed this version and not the original on DVD breaks my heart and baffles my mind.
I hope that this review helps some Last of the Mohicans fan(s) out there to understand what they are getting into with this buy. If I could return this DVD I would.

Summary: Whatever you do, STAY ALIVE!
Review: The best part of the movie is when Lewis has to leave Stowe because they will all be captured and all killed so he is forced to abandon her. He turns to her and tells her "Whatever you do, stay alive!" More powerful than telling her I love you, more powerful than any passionate proposal. The compelling part of the film is the chase and running of the film and the complex racial and political issues. This is a terrific film, its an excellent interpretation of the book and a great film to boot.
Madeline Stowe, as always is a beautiful, compelling actress who uses her abilities of both beauty, strength and compelling emotion to the Nth degree here. This film first turned me on to them and while Lewis got an Oscar, Stowe has yet to receive hers but she deserves one as well.

Summary: LAST OF THE MOHICANS
Review: WOW! What an adventure! Epic drama based on the classic novel by James Fenimore Cooper. Beautiful cinematography, realistic battle scenes, and love story between Daniel Day- Lewis and Madeline Stowe make this a must-see! Graphic violence is a little hard to take, but makes the movie more realistic. Will keep you enthralled from beginning to teary-eyed end. Buy this movie now, with it's recently reduced price! I payed quite a bit more for it, but it is a definite favorite.

Summary: A Must Have
Review: While the story deviates a bit from the classic literature, this film is simply a must-have for any DVD collection. It has it all; action romance, heroes, bad guys... One could want for little more in what has become for my wife and me, a great Sunday afternoon movie.

Summary: An okay movie but watch out!
Review: I have not heard of this movie until about a month ago. And yet I'm suprised to see (so far) this movie is getting 5 stars for advange custmor rviewrs, because I see that very rarely. Plus a lot of good movies like Lilo & Stitch, Stuart Little and Like Mike, are not getting an advnage of 5 stars. I would give you a lukewarm reccomendtion if you like movies with very little (or no swearing) at all. When the movie ended, I was confused by why the MPAA had given it a R rating. I guessed and I was right, that it was rated R for vilonce. Plus this is a very rare movie that the whole movie is shown in "letterbox" format on video. I have and used to "letterbox" format being shown on dvd. But if you love movies in "letterbox" format, I would recomed you to watch this film. But I don't think this movie is worth 5 stars because this movie is cofuses on either by what you have seen in the movie and why it got rated R.

Summary: Great direction, great acting, great plot.
Review: The directors of our day could really learn something from Direcor Michael Mann. He actually pulls off a "Romantic War movie"! Possibly one of the great movies of the 90's. Kudos to Daniel Day Lewis for his acting. And also, the movie does a good job of portraying the Native American Culture and the differences in culture and the relations with the French and the English.

The DVD itself was well done. Anamorphic widescreen is good quality. One downside is the lack of special features.

Summary: Don't watch it to accompany the book
Review: As long as you don't expect the movie to follow the book exactly, you will love this movie. Its attempt to capture the wildness of the northeast states during the colonization were wonderful. The colorful filmwork brought out exceptional detail. The fight scenes may have been full of gore, however it makes the fighting repugnant, something I believe the director was trying for. It didn't glorify it by any means.

Summary: Great movie for everyone
Review: This movie can get everyone's needs into one. There are two love stories on-going through four of the characters, and many action packed scenes. Don't get this movie confused with Pearl Harbor, this one is way better, and the historical content is accurate and nicely filmed.

Summary: holy ... this is one of the best movies ever
Review: Ok, so the story isnt very true to William Fenimore Coopers classic, that does not mean that this movie isnt totally sweet. The music is SO AWESOME, Daniel Day Lewis is such a badass, and so is everybody else. There isnt much dialog but thats good. The movie lets the stunning scenery and score take care of what the actions and sparse dialog dont get across. I have watched this movie like 5 times and in particular the last 20 minutes or so about a hundred times. The promontory always gets a lump in my throat. They are so brave and noble. They are fighting for vengeance, and for honor, but also to get a grip on the life that they once had control of, but which now has been sent into a turbulent spiral. Great men living in great times. Im not sure if I like the added scenes but there arent too many of them, its not really a big deal. "He is Uncas, my son. Please welcome him at the council fire of my people. We are all there but one. I, Chingachgook, last of the Mohicans. This land is not for me anymore, it is for people like my white son and his woman. And they too shall fade and will be replaced by others, until there is no frontier. Others will sweat and bleed, and make this land their own. But once, we were here." DAaaaaaa da da daaa da da DADAaaa... dude this movie smashes hard.
