Summary: A Vision Understood
Review: I was just as surprised as anyone to see the differences in the DVD version of this movie. The first time I watched it I noticed that some of the key lines that my friends and I used to recite were deleted. My first viewing was definitely not favorable. HOWEVER ... last night I sat down and watched it again. Except for the editing glitches I found the movie much more enjoyable. A arguement can be made that the song by Clannad(which I love) and some of the lines definitely gave the movie entertainment value however I am wondering if this is what Mr. Mann had in mind when he first created the movie. In the part with the deleted clannad song I found myself much more engaged in the scenes despite there being no flashy music. The extended running scenes really brought out the emotions of Hawkeye trying to find Cora.Perhaps this version is his way taking away some of the glitter and giving us a more in depth experience. This was how I felt as I watched it for the second time. If you have seen his other movies like 'Heat' you know his style of placing you in the midst of story that you don't want to end. Maybe that was why Miami Vice was so popular. Bottom Line: This movie will be a different experience for you but don't be critical. Enjoy it for what it is and try see it from the director's perspective instead of a hard to please consumer. If you are still not satisfied you can find the VHS version relatively cheap now! Enjoy the music,the acting and the scenery ..get some good popcorn and relax. The only reason I am giving it four stars is because of some of the editing glitches throughout the movie. But get past those and it's all good!

Summary: This is the reason I bought a DVD player in the first place!
Review: Michael Mann's "Last of the Mohicans" is a truly great epic which promises to endure for years to come. I've watched this movie countless times in different formats (LD/VHS/VCD) and, needless to say, I found the DVD version the best of the lot. This Director's Cut version has quite a number of additional footage which helps explain inconsistencies in the standard version. In the original release for instance, more people jumped into/rode the two canoes escaping the Hurons than the group which (eventually) emerged outside the falls. This DVD version actually shows a person falling off the boat, which explains the seeming discrepancy. Also a longer fight sequence during the fort seige, with the British tactic of firing their weapons simultaneously actually showing some merit by working against the French for a change(this was never shown to be effective against the Hurons in the original). Finally, a very thought-provoking and somewhat prophetic speech by Chingachkook (did I spell it right? Probably not!) in the end, also surprisingly absent in the original, caps off the movie perfectly. I would have given 5 stars to this had they included more features, such as a making of featurette or maybe even the standard release. Retaining Clannad's theme would likewise, in my opinion, have been a better alternative to the somewhat repetitious (although still awesome!) instrumental music. I hope they eventually come out with a special edition. All-in-all, though, this is still an excellent investment and worthwile addition to anyone's DVD collection.

Summary: Extremely sensual, yet irritating movie.
Review: First off, I recommend skipping this review if you have not seen the movie. I had heard some of my friends rant and rave about The Last of the Mohicans, and, being a fan of Daniel Day Lewis, decided to give it a shot. To give the movie its credit, Day Lewis is fantastic as always (can he really be the same man who played Cecil Vice in A Room With a View?), there are some wonderfully sensual moments, watching Hawkeye move through the forest and fight together as if there was a sixth sense between them was also fantastic, and the ending is rather spectacular. All of this being said, the movie is ruined by some of the cheesiest battle scenes in recent memory, and, I believe, horrific editing. The main characters, and Hawkeye in particular, seem to have been issued some kind of laser/radar-guided musket that never misses its target, and usually hits the poor Huron right in the heart, while the Huron seem to have such bad aim that, they couldn't hit an IMAX theater at point blank. I don't know, maybe I've watched too much Mystery Science Theater over the years but, my God, these battles are irritating! The other problem, which has apparently been solved in the DVD edition, is poor editing; one moment Cora and Hawkeye hate each other and, two lines later, they seem to have fallen passionately - PASSIONATELY - in love; later in the film we see Hawkeye planning to help his friends escape from the fort to help protect their families, and the next thing we know, he is being arrested for having helped them escape. How and when did these things happen? I'm curious to see the DVD version to see if these things have, in fact, been remedied. Maybe, I'll then be able to forgive the battle scenes....maybe.

Summary: Great movie, bad DVD transfer
Review: Imagine my disappointment when I viewed the DVD version of this epic tale of early America. The audio transfer is TERRIBLE! Much of the dialogue is barley audible and the music has lost much of it's depth. What happened to the Clannad vocal for "Wherever you may go I will find you..." ? The only vocal and they cut it! The added scenes are non-plus as far as I am concerned. I enjoyed the VHS version and wish I had bought it over this director's cut edition. Hopefully someone will do another competent DVD transfer faithful to the original version.

Summary: Poor quality encoding, comes with a directors cut warning.
Review: I'm a big fan of this movie. Unfortunately the video encoding of the movie is not very good. In fact the DVD comes with a small piece of paper printed with "This movie has been re-edited by Michael Mann. It is his definitive vision of the film. In order to create it, certain shots had to be lengthened, resulting in a momentary jump in the image." Sounds like a last minute effort to excuse the poor encoding. Smoke in some scenes also causes problems in the encoding process. The movie is also not "widescreen enhanced" so I can see the scan lines on my 36" Sony Wega. It's unfortunate that it has not been enhanced for widescreen. Still a "must have" for fans of this movie, especially since there are some scenes never before seen.

Summary: A visually spectacular and moving story
Review: A visually spectacular and moving story. And an authentic slice of pre-Revolutionary America. Indeed, a far better telling of the tale than the book from which it was adapted. The film is brimming with energy. Great performances from Daniel Day Lewis (Hawkeye) and Madeline Stowe (Cora) in their lead roles and from Wes Studi whose portrayal of Magua imbues the character with dimension and honor.

Summary: Great Orginal Movie Degraded with Choppy Edits & Bad DVD
Review: For those who love this movie and are expecting a great DVD, save your money, because you'll be extremely disappointed with the quality of the DVD transfer and the new choppy edits. The new less-than-seamless edits, poor color and lighting, and muddy dialogue transfer are more than enough reasons not to spend your money on this version. I agree with the others who hope this is not the last definitive version of this movie.

Summary: Such a beautiful period piece
Review: This film is so amazing! Everything is just perfect in this re-telling of the famous book. Daniel Day-Lewis and Madeleine Stowe are just perfect as Hawkeye and Cora. The scenery is beyond breathtaking and the music is beyond words. This is definately one of the greatest films of all time.

Summary: I loved the DVD version of Last of the Mohicans
Review: I just finished viewing the DVD version of Last of the Mohicans. I have seen both the theatrical and laserdisc versions of this movie. I was very pleased with Mann's cut. Even so, I believe that they should have offered an alternative unedited version on the other side of the disc. This would have satisfied the purists and Clannad fans. All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed Mann's edited version. His expanded versions of the battle scenes at fort William Henry and Chingachgook's ending speech appealed to this particular viewer. On the other hand, the few jumpy edits and deleted scenes did not adversely affect my enjoyment of this movie. The excellent music, sound, beautiful cinematography, and fast paced action combine to produce a movie viewing experience that can be enjoyed over and over again.

Review: Saw the DVD version last night. I must say after much anticipation, I was quite disappointed in the Director's Cut (DC). Many scenes were lengthened leading to long, awkward lapses in time with a little jump in the screen at the end. Little jump really annoyed me. The "disagreement" scene with Duncan as mentioned before was deleted (Why?) as well as Clannad's "I will find you". All this in the hopes of relaying the director's vision, which I thought had to do more with the Mohicans and their plight than the actual love story between Hawkeye and Cora. In the end, I came away with comparing the DC to a cheaper version of Dances With Wolves (also released at about the same time, maybe that's why the studio cut their version). I respect the fact that Mann wanted his audience to view his cut, but at least give us the option between that and the original (perhaps on the other side of the DVD). The addtional features are also a major disappointment. No Theatrical Trailer, no cast biographies, no director commentary, etc. The only features it has are subtitles (which were helpful in some scenes), and Scene Selection. Will now hold my breath for another version to find its way to me with expanded features and, of course, the theatrical release.
