Summary: Disappointing
Review: I love the director, love the stars, but am totally lukewarm about the movie. It should have been terrific. (But then so should "Titanic".) But an unfocussed script leaves it not much more than some nice visuals and some nice sounds trying fruitlessly to hook up.

Summary: Michael Mann's A Gentleman, Not A Butcher
Review: I really don't understand all the negative fuss & hullabalo over this "Director's Expanded Edition" release of an all-time classic - 1992's, "The Last of the Mohicans." Every scene added to this version enhances the telling of a clear, coherent story. It's pretty much all subtle stuff that serves to strengthen the undercurrents of the film. Yes, there is material, in the form of a line here & there, that is deleted from the original theatrical version, but ... BUTCHERED? Hardly. Forget the familiar, and the film flows in fine form. No longer is Hawkeye portrayed as a 90's pop-hero. Now, he's a bonafide survivalist. The only portion changed that matters is the elimination of Clannad's "I Will Find You" from the soundtrack. I liked that. But, I like the theme music that replaces it, as well. To me, it's a wash. I can enjoy it either way. The extended courier & parlay scenes are well worth the time & effort. Michael Mann's genious shines, even more, in this Director-edited version.

Overall, the movie in this version is stronger, ends with more impact, that gave even me - a viewer of this film hundreds of times in my search for the locations - a lump in my throat, and has unmatched, by any other version, sound & picture qualities ... just wait till you see the night scenes at Cameron's Cabin & The Burial Ground ... the color throughout is vibrantly vivid.

No problem here! I love it!

Summary: WOW!!
Review: Oh my gosh I saw this in my civics class and I thought it was going to be another dumb movie but oh my gosh it was great. I felt like I was in it and most the people in my class cryed. It was just great. I bought the soundtrack. The music adds so much to the movie and the soundtrack is great. If you haven't seen it...SEE IT!!!

Summary: Absolute Epic
Review: From start to finish this DVD is terrific. I bought it even after getting VHS. (My in-depth review can be found by clicking on my name.) In comparison, the DVD if far more superior to the tape, simply for quality. The extra's are great also. (Even the guide screen is awesome!) But two things struck me as odd. Why cut the ending #1? And How come the original release didn't hold all the extra material? It is still wonderful. You could buy the vhs to keep the ending whole, or you can buy the DVD and have all the features, all the extensions (Including an entire battle scene), and have crystal clear images. Whatever, buy the DVD for the collection!

Summary: Just Wait
Review: If I can convince two Matrix-Loving teens to watch and enjoy this movie, I can surely convince you. Is That what you want? Here you go. Pure adrenaline rush, Putting a hole through an elk, Pure Love, and several battle scenes. All you need do is make it past a scene of talking between Duncan and Webb at the beginning, then you off to bashing through the forest, jumping out hidden caves through a water fall, burnings and sharp-shootings, heart pumping/wrenching climax. And it has the full un-cut version of the revenge scene that the dvd slightly slandered. Your gonna love it!

Summary: What were they thinking?
Review: This is my all time favorite film (with the best movie soundtrack I have ever heard), I must have seen it over 15 time and I still look forward to watching it again... However, what were they thinking when they edited the last fighting scene between Magua and Chingachgook? They could not have done a worse job... in my opinion by making it less 'violent' they have spoiled the film's for those who have seen the original. There were scene alot worse through out the movie (when Magua takes the heart... need I say more?) so why edit the most memorable scene of thes the film.

On the positive side, this film has an extremelly good soundtrack, the music is so atmospheric... Anyway, the DTS is a real bonus as this soundtrack on DTS sounds fantastic.

On the whole, if you've seen the original you'll be annoyed at the ending. However,if haven't seen this film you'll like it very much, especially with the DTS soundtrack.

Summary: GREAT
Review: Me and Mr. Maltin finally agree on something. This movie is excellent. I highly encourage you to see this masterpiece of American History.

Summary: Without a doubt a Classic
Review: I can't even count the times I have watched this DVD.....its a total romantic story with a good historical story. As an American Indian, I can totally relate to this story...It is the ultimate love story with an intense sub story line about what actually happened in the French/Indian war agains't the English....only the Patriot comes close.....How ugly, yet beautiful our history can be..we should be proud as American Indians, and as Americans, with all our faults as this historical fiction brings out....worth more than one viewing...

Summary: New DTS Version ..... No problems here!
Review: I didn't buy the original DVD Director's cut because so many reviewers chopped it to pieces. When I saw the DTS version coming I had to buy it, and I'm glad I did. I watched it for the first time today, and I can honestly say... great movie, great DVD. The filming of this movie is just phenominal. The natural setting looks like painted pictures. The cinematography is relentless, the soundtrack vibrant, and the acting is about as good as it gets. This is a great piece of history, literature, and film all in one. Memorable scene after scene is presented as this baby clicks on all cylinders. This is truly one of the most under-appreciated films of the last 30 years. It works as a romance, an action film, and a historical film. I saw no ghost images or other problems associated with the last DVd version. I'll leave it to others to search frame by frame for problems. This film was noted for it's sound, and the DVD dts only enhances it. From the first sequence (tracking the deer) to the final, exhilerating action climax (the fight on the hilltop trail) you'll watch this again and again. 5 stars!! Daniel Day-lewis is just incredible! Some of the action sequences (saving Cora, for instance) are examples that should be shown in film school. This is certainly one to buy. The aspect ratio is 1:2.35 for the reviewers who complained about the previous DVD issue. If you haven't seen this excellent film, and you love movies, this is your next film to see.

Summary: Amazing flick, bad DVD
Review: The Last of the Mohicans is a classic. One can not dispute that. With an amazing cast, excellent direction, beautiful scenery and music, this movie is the benchmark for the genre. Modern day movies use elements from this classic often (watch The Patriot, for example.)

Unfortunately, whoever made this DVD did NOT know what he was doing. The audio is sampled at a low bitrate (192kbps), and you can hear the high pitced artifacts resulting. The video is SHOCKINGLY poor for a DVD, more like VHS quality with lots of artifacting and other odd phenomena.

I borrowed the DVD from a friend and am glad I didn't purchase it myself. Perhaps one day, someone will make the DVD the right way.
