Summary: Stunning
Review: This is my favorite movie of all time. I have seen it so many times that I could probably quote the entire thing. If you're looking for an epic romantic adventure set in the colonial period and you were disappointed and disillusioned with that God-awful film, The Patriot, then check out The Last of the Mohicans. It has all the subtlety and artistry that The Patriot lacked. There are some absolutely stunning images from this film: the shot of the bridge reflected perfectly in the pond, the scene under the waterfall, etc. The acting is uniformly fabulous. The action scenes are terrific. Can you tell I love this movie?

Summary: Stunning scenery, action, and music.
Review: This is one of my top 5 movies of all time. The musical score is beyond excellent. The music sets the mood in so many ways, and immerses you in the action. The scenery is outstanding. Daniel Day-Lewis is excellent in this movie. I would reccommend this to anyone.

Summary: Directors Edition Ruins the Original
Review: Perhaps "ruins" is a little strong, but it fits in the title line. My biggest objection is that Michael Mann ruined the eloquently simplicity of the closing scene to insert a long polemic about what the white man had done to the indians. If it had been supported by the events of the story, I would have accepted it, but it was totally out of context, and comes across as a rambling diatribe. Furthermore, he cut one of the best visuals of his original movie, a silent profile shot of the three surviving heroes. Mann's original theatrical and VHS release was one of the great movies ever made, from story to cast to score to cinematography, but the new ending of the "directors edition" ruined it for me. I will only watch my older VHS edition. I would give a great deal to get a DVD of the original, but it doesn't appear to exist.

Summary: Good movie, bad DVD
Review: As others have noted, the original movie is awesome. The VHS version is awesome. But don't spend your money on this pathetic DVD. Some of the problems:

The complete removal of the Clannad song presents an interesting, though inferior, variation of the movie. Technically, the DVD has visible glitches, which should have been corrected before the DVD was released. Some of the darker scenes have been lightened, which only serves to destroy the mood and remind you that you're watching a movie. You'll also learn why the last scene was edited severely in the original movie as you slowly begin to fall asleep from the boring political statement that is made....

The DVD should have included the original version so that we could all ignore the absolutely lousy director's cut. (...)

Summary: Last Of the Mohicans
Review: Stunning film work, musical score that flows with the emotion of the movie. One of the best re-makes ever made. I cant wait to get a dvd and see it again.

Summary: Honest Human Emotions-Women Delite!
Review: A more handsome and exciting man there may never be again. True to his nature, intensly primal in his eyes and energy pounding through his blood to equal all of history's passion. He is a genuine fighting machine with an intelligence and cunning to lead a nation. A nation that is dying.

We could do with a few hundred more like him in our hopes and private dreams. Maybe we'll find one in a relationship? Get out of the way or hang on to really live!

Stupendous.

Summary: A very disappointing DVD - not recommended
Review: I would not recommend the DVD version of LOTM. It takes away the music, in some scenes where the music is critical, as well as some quips which were crucial to illuminating the characters. Also, the additional scenes, to my great surprise, did nothing to add to the film; indeed, they interrupted the general flow of the film and were rather annoying. Until I saw the DVD version of this film, I never thought editing was a much needed process.

Summary: Crippling blow to the best of movies!
Review: The director's cut DVD version of The Last of the Mohicans took what was one of the greatest films, a film that seamlessly combined romance, action, and some of the most beautiful cinamatography ever seen, and managed to destroy the flow of the film, change some of the stirring music and drop a few of the movie's best lines and moments all in the name of adding in extra scenes that are, in the end, completely useless. The DVD doesn't even contain the option to view the original version and has very little in the way of "extras" such as behind the scenes footage or interviews with any of the people involved. I am going to have to stick to my VHS version of this fantastic film, and recommend that others skip on splurging for this very disappointing DVD.

Summary: One of the best
Review: LOTM is one of my all-time favorite films. While it seems that many people here didn't like the changes made in the DVD Director's edition, I found the changes, for the most part, to have enhanced my enjoyment of the movie. I was most pleased that the Clannad song was dropped from the film as I found it rather distracting. I would have liked to see more deleted scenes and other behind the scenes features. This is by far one of the most accurate portrayals of the French & Indian War period ever made and is filled with action, romance, great battles, and beautiful costumes. I simply had to have this great movie on DVD!

Summary: Don't buy the DVD, do buy the VHS!
Review: I, like the other reviewers, loved this movie in the theater and on video. It was wonderful and I couldn't wait for it to come out on DVD! Alas, I was disappointed greatly in the Director's Expanded Version. They muted down the Irish music during the love scene, and totally cut out the singing during the captives walk (even though they included that song in the credits). I didn't really notice any outstanding "expanded scenes." But I did notice the quip that Hawkeye gave the Major (on the lake with the pistol pointing at him) was cut out. To me, that quip showed how well Hawkeye could still face adversities and strife. I would much rather have had a DVD of this movie with behind-the-scenes interviews and deleted scenes (like the love scene between Uncas and Alice under the waterfall). I would have loved a double love storyline! It would have made their end much more intense.
Overall, it's still a good movie, but I'm probably going to get rid of my DVD. I would buy another one if they came out with a better DVD version with more options.
