Summary: summit of new martial arts movies
Review: I saw the movie 10 years ago when I was very young. Now ten years past but i still cannot find another one which can replace this one as the best martial arts movie. Really excellent. I wonder if the people who gave the movie one or two stars really know how to appreciate a real Chinese martial arts movie.

Summary: Not pleased.
Review: I wasn't pleased with this film at all. It didn't have nearly as much kung fu as I thought it would have. It is mainly a drama/adventure movie. It is comparable to Crouching Tiger, but Crouching Tiger still has a better plot and more kung fu fighting scenes. Donnie Yuen is not even in the movie that much. He doesn't even fight untill the last 15 min. of the movie (which is realy the only 15 min. of the movie worth watching). This is one of those movies that you watch when you need something to help you fall asleep. Oh, and did I mention that it is a fantisy movie. The kung fu that they do in the movie is a bunch of flying around and throwing darts at each other. If there is anyone out there that wants a "like new" copy of this movie, E-mail me and I will consider a trade. $9.99 sounds like a reasonable selling price to me.

Review: I would say this movie is Great! the Kungfu and Swordplays are Great! i love the story Line...... If your a Brigitte Lin Fan you should really see this movie! ...... Brigitte Lin Chin Hsia, Tony L., and Maggie Chung played their roles very good! Brigitte kungfu/swordplay is GREAT in this movie! action packed...... it's so cool how their foes stay in the Inn with them but, and trys to kill each other. ai ya ...... well yeah i won't let cha knoe what happen in this movie but, ya have to buy and find out ! hehehe =) GOOD MOVIE!

Summary: Magnificent film with all-star cast
Review: I'll start with the beautiful cinematography shot in China's desert. Next, Brigitte Lin and Maggie Cheung, two of Hong Kong's most talented AND beautiful stars. Maggie is hilarious in her role as the spunky inn-keeper. The bathrobe fight scene between the two women is both sensual and funny. Brigitte, Brigitte, Brigitte...that's all I can say. Actually another outstanding performance from Ms. Lin. The fight scenes are terrific. Donnie Yen turns in a wonderfully wicked performance.
The director's cut version with Chinese audio and subtitles is the only way to view this film.

Summary: Whoosh, nudge, POW!
Review: My favourite of all the 80's/90's swordplay flicks. In the words of Spinal Tap, "This one goes up to 11"!The action is non-stop and the fights (particularily the big dust-ups in the titular inn) are jaw-dropping, but what really makes this movie fly are the perfect performances from Maggie Cheung and Brigitte Lin. Both of them succeed in creating (competely different) characters of immense charm and warmth, and you end up cheering for them both. I'm happy to report that this DVD is excellent -- the picture has some scratches but the colour depth and the sound quality are both great (especially compared to the old video release), and the new subtitles make the story a lot easier to follow (oh, they're quoting poetry all the time! No wonder it was a little hard to follow). Absolutely a must-have. One of the greatest films of all time now available in a form worth keeping.

Summary: A visionary Inn
Review: The first thing to do on this dvd is to watch it through in the original chinese first then go over it the next night in commmentary mode. Now, on first veiwing, the dramatic classic story of the remaining young children of a clan ruthlessly exterminated by the all powerful "omnipotent" super eunuch (very similiar to the character in "The Assassin") Donnie Yen, whose skills are more in strong acting until the climatic conclusion, are at first viewing very seemingly similiar to other genre action/adventure flicks. (And if you thought you had seen it all as far as mind blowing film experiences goes, just wait till you get to the last 20 minutes of this film.) The real meat of this movie (coupled with some of the best acting in the chinese cinema) is not in the fact that it is just a retelling of an older indigenous story, but actually in how director Siu-Tung Ching uses it as a vehicle to tell the change over of British controlled China toward Communism. With the fact that this movie is rated high in martial-arts circles, it makes for engrossing veiwing. And again, wait until it's ending, it will completely bust you up.

Summary: BETTER THAN FIRE DRAGON! ! ! ! (DVD Review)
Review: The version I'm reviewing is the recently released "The New Dragon Gate Inn" distributed in the U.K. It's essentially the same movie. First, some great performances here turned in from Tony Leung, Brigette Lin (of course) and Maggie Cheung. This movie is very reminiscent of "Fire Dragon" but has much better character development and pacing. Donnie Yen is not as spectacular a villain in comparison to OUATIC II, but that doesn't mean his acting isn't good in this film. Some descent action sequences here. Frankly, I enjoyed them much more than the largely overrated "Fire Dragon". The action resembles "Swordsman 2" but doesn't go too overboard with wires. The biggest complaint I have is that it begins too abruptly. Significant events that drive the plot are merely narrated, and become confusing due to the number of characters introduced at once. Sort of like "Dragon Chronicles" but not as bad. Now about the DVD, it's Region 2, 1.85:1 aspect ratio (widescreen), in Mandarin with English subtitles. The subtitles are not typical HK-English and are grammatically correct. There is an interview with Donnie Yen, and some other extras to keep you busy. If you like "Fire Dragon," then you'll love this. "Swordsman II" fans should enjoy the action, but should prepare themselves for the drama. Any HK swordplay fan will want to check this out.

Summary: Great remake
Review: This film borrows heavily from the 1971 classic A Touch of Zen. It starts off the children of an murdered official being led into the desert, only to be saved by Bridgitte Lin, and Tony Leung. After saving the children, they make their way to the Dragon Inn, a desolate place on the western Chinese border. While waiting to cross the border, they are pursued by a Eunuch general who traps them in the Inn. Overall, this film is filled with excellent sword play, drama, and the inclusion of Maggie Cheung.

Summary: Amusing, exciting and entertaining
Review: This film has all the trappings one usually finds in a movie associated with Tsui Hark. High-flying wire acrobatics, flambouyant costumes, wigs and sets, incredible choreography, and lavish cinamatography. Oh yes, let's not forget a star-studded cast, including Bridgette Lin, Maggie Cheung and Donnie Yan. If you enjoy classics such as "The Bride with White Hair", "A Chinese Ghost Story", and "Once Upon a Time in China", you'll love this one. The performances of Bridgette Lin and Maggie Cheung are terrific and very entertaining. However, if you don't like a lot of overblown, fantastic storytelling, (for example, Bridgette Lin flying down a 100 foot cliff face and running across a line of archers, using their arms as stepping stones) you'll probably just think this movie is silly. The story is intriguing, the directing is good, and there are less bizarre and inexplical events than in similar films. The unnecessarily campy final fight scene, however, is the only blemish on an otherwise excellent story. If you don't think it's the greatest movie of all time, you'll at least come away with a couple hours of good fun entertainment.
