Summary: A brilliant idea but ...
Review: You know how it is . The oversimplifications and the absurd concept of the lack of intelligence in the Nazi Army makes of that film an entertaining film just for teenagers but not for you if you are a mature person .

I recognize a splendid cast pitifully wasted . Burton in one of the less interesting films he made in his notable career.
Even the locations are superb , there are so many incredible situations that you have to smile .

The idea was wonderful but extremely poor conceived . Compare this film with Guns of Navarrone and establish by yourself your own conclussions.

Summary: "Broadsword calling Danny Boy"
Review: This has got to be one of the best and worst movies of all time.

Best because it's so entertaining and full of dizzying plot twists. Worst because it's ridiculous and full of silly plot twists.

Alistair MacLean was something of a genius at keeping riveting suspense going -- never mind it doesn't all make sense.

Parachute drops -- allied commandos behind enemy lines -- masquerading as German officers, infiltrating an impregnable castle via spy and on top of a cablecar.
Battling the Germans throughout the castle -- jumping from the cablecar, tricky rigged explosives set off by a passing bus.
That was a cute trick. Some of the reviewers forgot that Burton and Eastwood prepared for the escape by rigging explosives all along the roadway. Unlike some modern movies, this one shows them doing it.

Then you have Burton with that incredible voice and Eastwood playing off him rather hilariously. I have never forgotten Burton's "Broadsword calling Danny Boy."

The dialogue is actually pretty witty, if you pay attention:

Major Smith: "Lieutenant, in the next 15 minutes we have to create enough confusion to get out of here alive."

Lieutenant Schaffer: "Major, right now you got me about as confused as I ever hope to be."

Summary: Classic World War II Movie
Review: This movie defined one of the 'icons' of the world war II genre,, ie the secret nazi fortress/castle at the top of a mountain accessible only by a tram. It's just one of those things that you either get or you don't and this film depicts it perfectly. There are a couple of hollywoodesque problems like a car being pushed off a cliff which explodes for no reason in mid air(shades of magnum pi and other tv shows) and a couple of silly brief scenes depicting a romantic subplot between burton and one of the two female spies but they are NOT in any way obtrusive to the rest of the movie. I think by the time it was over burton and clint must have offed a couple hundred 'Jerries' at least. Good ww2 actioneer :)

Summary: Highly Recommended!!!
Review: If you're looking for a great and intelligent action film, this is it! Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood team up to rescue a captured American General before he can tell the Nazis anything about the Allied invasion of Europe. Or so they think?
When I first watched this movie I was totally amazed and dumbfounded by the plot twists, particularly the big one, and had to watch it over several times. This is NOT just another adrenaline soaked action film fueled by four letter words, shallow characters, and mindless explosions. Brian G. Hutton and Alistair MacLean craft a plot so clever and amusing, it will leave you scratching your head long after it is over. Then when you finally do figure it out, you'll smile at its simplicity and brilliancy.
The mood and atmosphere of this movie simply speaks espionage and secrecy. It hails from the days when characters and plot drove the story, not the action. From the captivating score to the incredible scenery, 'Where Eagles Dare' is a classic. Highly recommend it!!!

Summary: This is Broadsword
Review: A brilliant adventure war movie boasting Richard Burton at his smug best and an almost famous Clint Eastwood complete with stony face and a propensity for extreme firepower. There's more twist's and double crosses than you can shake a stick, but just lie back and enjoy the stunning snowy mountain scenery, the occasional hot blonde, the cliched oily Gestapo guy and the awesome tension that ratchets up and when things go off, you're in for one of the great escape/ gun battles you are likely to see in a war film. Rather like The Wild Bunch, this was one of the first films to use squibs (fake blood in a little sack that exploded) and it definitely adds a hard edge to the otherwise fantasical goings on in the film. It's a crowd pleaser from beginning to end and always worth a rewatch, which makes it a classy DVD purchase.

Summary: Commando raid at its most ludicrous
Review: OK. Stellar star cast. I'll give you that and no dearth of action as well. But to portray the German Fallschirmjaeger and alpine troops as a bunch of bungling flat footed idiots is a little far fetched. It is history at its worst portrayal and hollywood action at its golden peak. Some dumbass marine from New Jersey might fall for this drivel but not well read students of history. It gets failing grade for portrayal of reality based fiction but gets high marks for choice of location and choice of cast. If you want a better war flick, pick Operation Daybreak.

Summary: Whats up with the dubbing
Review: I happened to think that this was a cool movie.
Being a ex-marine I understand that alot of this
if not all of it is fantasy but hey its a movie not a documentary its suppose to be fun. My main concern was the dubbing was this an american movie or european ? it was Burtons and Eastwoods voices on the film but it was advanced meaning the sound occured before the action now I dont know if it was my dvd player I dont think so but man that was annoying
