Summary: Am I watching the same movie?!
Review: I never heard of this movie, but one day my Dad sent me a message about it, knowing that I was a huge fan of Martial Art movies, as well as Jackie Chan. I came here to check the user reviews and was impressed with basically nothing but 4 and 5 star reviews! Other sites also gave great reviews. I thought, "hey, how could I go wrong," so I purchased it.Well needless to say after watching it I was shocked! I was shocked at how this movie was getting all these 4 and 5 star reviews. This movie was average AT BEST. The story showed promise and the special effects are some of the best I've ever seen, for a Chinese film. It rivals anything done in the United States. The sound was pretty decent as well, though some music, during a couple scenes, sounded like cheesy porn music. What I couldn't get over though was some pretty cheesy dialogue, bad acting, and some parts that were just plain stupid (i.e. when Jackie Chan gives some Vampires some antidepressants and they dance to a "beat" he does on the Ambulance door). The only really great part about Vampire Effect is the two stars of the film. These girls are cute! They also threw down, and there was a couple good fight scenes, though there is better. They are making a sequel and I may check it out, but I don't think I'll buy it. I suggest to ANYBODY to only rent this one. This is the first DVD I ever regretted buying.

Summary: This movie da bomb
Review: I really liked this movie. Good graphics and a story line that actually is good instead of the regular hack n' slash horror movies. Im a horror jumkie and o wasn't let down the voice overs were done beautifuly unlike Godzilla. The 2 girls in the movie were ... kicking vampire slayers on the search for a vampire who is in the search for 5 stones to open a vampire bible. They get help from a vampire prince who is agood guy. The 2 girls are also pop singers and cameo apperance by Jackie Chan. However Jackie Chan should not be on the cover because he only has a cameo apperance and thats kinda rude to the main actors. Over all this is one of the best movies to come out of Asia since Enter the Dragon. R.I.P Bruce Lee -Thomas Beard

Summary: NOT a Jackie Chan Movie.
Review: I'll be honest, when I rented this, I wasn't expecting much. Let's face it, any film called "Vampire Effect" with Jackie Chan as the headlining star isn't going to win any academy awards. I must say however that I was pleasently surprised. The refreshingly simple, yet compelling plot was enough to draw me in, however it was the special effects that made this film so fun. The fight scenes, CGI, and wirework rival the first matrix film and are thoroughly impressive. The film does not have the cheap feel that plagues many Hong Kong films. The english dubbing is for the most part excellent, however, this sometimes cheapens the experience. I would definately watch it with the subtitles the first time. This film's only downfalls are some overly cheesy dialogue and a few scenes of stupid humor that feel completely out of place in this film. Watch this film with the right mindset and I guarentee that you won't be dissapointed.

Summary: Somewhat different vampire movie
Review: In this movie, vampires live in a church - there's an interesting twist. Among the regular bunch of vampires who feed on humans, one young vampire - a prince - falls in love with "food" - a mortal woman, who happens to be a sister of a vampire hunter. Thus he decides that he doesn't want to feed on humans any longer, and just like Angel (from Buffy) opts for packaged blood supply.
The main actions revolves around power-hungry vampire, a vampire who can gain some special powers by taking the essence of several vampires of the royal descent. He already had his way with all the vampires of the royal descent, except the prince who lives in the church and here the main battle issues with some flying kung-fu.
The movie is on the light side - no gripping action, nothing scarry, more on the light and humorous side, with some special effects.
I did expect to way more of Jackie Chan, who barely appears in this movie.

Summary: A Light, Fluffy Movie
Review: It may be closer to 2 1/2 stars. I have the import version, The Twins Effect. No, its not a Jackie Chan movie, he has several annoying cameos. To be honest, the movie would have been better without him. That said, the fighting was pretty good, and the first scene in the train station was worth the price of admition. The rest of the movie was pretty fluffy. The story was OK, with an interesting take on Vampires. The acting was mediocre, but what does one expect from the Twins? All in all, a mildly entertaining diversion.

Review: most movies that are from other countries tend to um suck! but this was really good, the fighting was kick ass and the special effects were great. its no buffy the vampire slayer but it was good!

Summary: Surprisingly good!
Review: My friend and I were just coming back from seeing Van Helsing and were a little disappointed with that movie; so we decided to just rent something to fill out the evening. From the box and cover, this looked like a fun/campy vampire flick. Boy were we surprised with how GOOD this movie actually was! It had some really great fight scenes; the acting was good; the special effects were surprisingly well done as well. Even the plot was decent! If you like the vampire or kung fu genre of flicks, you'll love this one. I'm definitely buying this flick for my collection!

Summary: *sigh* Another butchered American edit...
Review: Okay, first things first: Jackie Chan is a "Special Guest Star," but in American, that gets him top-billing. This is spite of the fact that the two female stars -- a pop duo known as "Twins" -- are one of the biggest things in Hong Kong these days. Not to mention co-stars Ekin Cheng, Edison Chen, and Anthony Wong Chau-Sang, all big box-office bucks in HK. (alliteration!!!)
Second, while this dub may be better than most dubs, it's still a dub. I risk sounding like a snob, but dubs tend to dumb-down the dialogue (more alliteration!!!) and you really lose something not hearing the original actors deliver the lines. Even if you can't understand what they're saying, you can hear the emotions in their voices.
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, this film has over ten minutes of footage cut, apparently to make it more appealing to an American audience. It only makes the film choppier and make much less sense.
If you've the time, look for the uncut, subtitled version, called "The Twins Effect" in the U.S. Still fluff, but at least it's fun.

Summary: Donnie Yen Action with Hong Kong Pop Singers! And It Works!
Review: Playful Hong-kong actioner "Vampire Effect" is also known as "The Twins Effect" which describes its nature more precisely. The film was a big hit in summer 2003 in Hong Kong partly because its stars -- enormously popular singers, "Twins." The duo Gillian Chung and Charlene Choi play the main characters of the film, kind of the Oriental "Buffy" vamipre killers, and any mention of the name Jackie CHan means just a cameo (though it comes with a good action). The story is too simple and unoriginal to take seriously. Reeve (Ekin Cheng) is a vamipre hunter whose sister Helen (Charlene Choi) falls in love with ... yes, a handsome and benevolent vampire prince Kazav (Edison Chen). But a villainous European vampire (Swiss-born Mickey Hardt) comes all the way to Hong Kong, to seek for the secret of the holy book, and so on and on. You also meet a novice vamire hunter (Gillian Chung), who naturally falls in love with Reeve. Just because this film is a vehicle for the two pop idols does not mean "Vampire Effect" stinks. The fact is, because of the participation of Donnie Yen ("Blade 2" or Jet Li's "Hero"), the action sequence is more than satisfactory, and even the two heroines' actions are not bad. Donnie Yen provides very good stunts, especially when he uses swords, and though the girls are not perfect fighters, it is easily felt that they did hard training for the film. I found the acting "Twins" acceptable, if not great. Though some may hate it, I thought their way of screaming or smiling very cute. And you should remember, this is "Buffy" not runner for the Oscars. If the girls look cartoonish (and they do), why complain? They know what they are doing. Jackie Chan appears, but his extended cameo (he shows up twice) means a few (but respectable and funny) stunts. This time he uses an ambulance in his fight scenes, and some of them are really hilarious. And see his "marriage" with Karen Mok (opposite to Jet Li in "Black Mask" or the cop in "So Close"), which proves their great comic sense. Also you see Anthony Wong ("Infernal Affair") and Josie Ho. The effects are sometimes cheesy, but overall decently done. (See the opening "London" station scenes which are in fact shot in Bangkok in Thailand). The film is making fun of some of the rules of vampire films, but the film belongs mainly to martial arts action. It's a popcorn movie in a good sense, and never takes itself seriously. Still it has some great stunts, plus pretty girls (or vampire hunters). Just have fun, that's all you have to do.
