Summary: A cult classic.
Review: A very funny movie. Anyone who likes Kurt Russell will like this movie. Kurt plays a big rig driver(Jack Burton) who is unwillingly brought into a chinese underworld war. With a delightful blend of fairy tale and reality this story is supposed to be scary but turns out more like a comedy. John Carpenter does an awesome job of bringing all the characters to life and Kurt does an excellent job of playing the reluctant hero. If you like having fun watching movies this is a movie for you. You can always rent it first and see how you like it.

Summary: Great humor, great action, great movie!
Review: Although it's not John Carpenter's best (I liked his "Vampires" more), it's still wonderful fun! One of the things I liked about it was that it relied on comic book style action and humor rather than taking itself too serious. It's very original stuff. Kurt Russel is great as a wise-crackin' truck driver who thinks he's all so cool, and Kim Cattrall is okay as a damsel in distress. Okay, it does get corny at times, and it does tend to get a bit silly, but who cares?! This movie is so full of fighting scenes and kung-fu it'll make you forget all about that! Why my TV Guide said it got two stars, I do not know!

Summary: A lightweight flick gets a world-class DVD package
Review: Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon it isn't, but early '80's kung-fu action flick Big Trouble in Little China is more fun than it has any right to be-- and coming from director John Carpenter, best known for dark horror films and thrillers... that's a bit of a surprise. Even more surprising is the comprehensive nature of this two-disc DVD set, containing more extras than one would think extant for what is to many a corny display of Hollywood schlock. For the rest of us, this DVD is simply a must-have.

Kurt Russell is in rare form here as goofy truck driver Jack Burton, founder of some of the greatest quotes in film history ("Like I told my last wife, I said honey, I never drive faster than I can see; 'sides that it's all in the reflexes..."). When Chinatown street punks steal his truck (and his best friend's fiancee), it's up to Jack and his friend Wang to save the day. It manages to be funny without losing its integrity as a good action film, though the action here is lighter on the choreography and heavier on the special effects.

This DVD package's extras include interviews with the film's special effects crew, deleted scenes, making-of featurettes, theatrical/TV trailers, and an oddly entertaining commentary from John Carpenter and Kurt Russell. The commentary is in fact the only real low point of this DVD; throughout much of it, Carpenter and Russell spend very little time discussing the movie, but at least it's evident that they're having a good time. Then again, I've never known anyone who didn't have a good time watching this film. Do yourself a favor and pick this one up today.

Summary: Great movie, not-so-special edition
Review: Big Trouble in Little China is one of my all-time favorite movies. Written by the author of Buckaroo Banzai, the deliberately corny dialog and fast-paced plot hold up well even in light of today's action comedies. As an homage to Hong Kong cinema in general and the work of men like Tsui Hark and King Hu in particular, it's a bit less successful, but still, this was the first American movie to successfully incorporate some of the more flamboyant aspects of Asian cinema.

My only complaint is that the special features on this "special edition" are exceptionally poor. The director's commentary has a few interesting tidbits, but it's mostly just John Carpenter and Kurt Russel shooting the breeze and socializing. The deleted scenes are mildly interesting, but mostly very slow-paced. They were really scraping the bottom of the barrel to come up with material for the second DVD, and it shows.

If they ever come out with a "regular" edition of this movie on DVD, buy that, instead. Until then, go ahead and buy this one, and use that second disk as a coaster.

Summary: Classic John Carpenter
Review: I loved this movie when it first came out and the love affair starts all over again. I have watched VHS copies of this over the years and now the DVD is unbelievable. The DVD transfer on this movie is incredible. Tons of extras and a fun movie who can resist that? Can I compare cheese such as this to wine? Lets try. This movie gets better with age, Jack Burton, like a fine wine, gets better with age. A must in any DVD collection.

Summary: Simply entertainment
Review: When you sit down to watch this movie, keep in mind that it's simply for entertainment. It's not about kung fu (though there is some of this.) It's not about special effects (though there are some of these.) And it's not about Chinese history, culture or philosophy (there's certainly none of this.)

It's a comedy, about a swaggering loud-mouth who's way out of his league, dealing with supernatural powers that he can't begin to fathom. But with determination - and some help from his friends - he makes it through.

From this point of view, Russell pulls off a great performance. Jack Burton is a terrific character, and Russell portrays him perfectly. The other performances are also strong, and the writing is lively, making for a fun movie.

Summary: Replace your worn out VHS copy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Review: Okay.. here's the deal... I've probably seen this movie more than any other film.. prob over 30 times. It's that good. John Carpenter once again proves he's ahead of his time. While Big Trouble was blasted critically at it's release (just like Carpenter's horror classic THE THING), I've yet to meet someone who doesn't like this film. Kurt Rusell is Jack Burton, a man's man who is quite possibly a bit clueless, a trucker with a remark for any situation. Our hero becomes thrust into some supernatural and martial arts mayhem in San Francsico's Chinatown. This film has action and humour humour humour. This film makes me laugh after all this time. This film has the kinda Hong Kong stunts you see nowadays (ala Jet Lee or Jackie Chan) but were nonexistent back in the 80s(to americans anyway).Fox did good, Good transfer and sound... lots of cool extras.. including some great extended takes. The commentary while not up to the greatness of The Thing's is still priceless to fans of the film. Buy, live it, share it.... You know what Jack Burton always says at a time like this...

Summary: We are Jack inside
Review: Jack is the main charactor. Truck driving, beer drinking, loner with a positive id. I can watch this movie over and over. I'm glad it's out in DVD. Some may think it's stupid, but it's fun, a movie you can watch with your kids with interesting plot. It gets into Chinese belief of the elements. It is a movie I can watch several times a year with a big bowl of pop corn. The internet can give you more insite into the Chinese charactors.

Summary: Big Trouble Is Great Fun
Review: Big Trouble In Little China has been critically bashed from every possible angle since its release, but that just goes to show you that critics rarely have a sense of FUN. Big Trouble is an absolute blast, and it never makes a habit out of taking itself too seriously even when things seem darkest for the characters involved. It is like what you might get if you crossed Indiana Jones, Army of Darkness, and Enter the Dragon, and it's a delightful experience.

The story revolves around Jack Burton (Kurt Russell), a truck-driving everyman with a big mouth, and his friend Wang, a Chinese restaurant owner whose fiance is kidnapped by a gang of Chinatown thugs. From here the tale spirals into the realm of the supernatural and fantastic, eventually leading the heroes (and Jack) beneath Chinatown and into the underworld lair of a 2000-year-old sorcerer named Lo Pan. In the end, it's up to Jack and friends to put the undead magician down once and for all and save the girl (or girls) from his clutches. The premise alone is rich with camp and excitement.

Big Trouble is, quite simply, one of the best fantasy films ever made. Jack Burton is a truly lovable reluctant hero with far more bark than bite, and it's a shame that Russell hasn't ever been able to reprise the role. It would be difficult to have more fun while watching a motion picture. Big Trouble is action-packed, funny as hell, visually fantastic, and sometimes even eerie... Get it. Get it now!

Summary: An amazing movie
Review: How can a movie be bad staring a giant ghost-man with a pin going through his head name Lopan? And how did Mortal Kombat get away with their Raiden character? He is a direct copy of one of the Storms in this movie. The best Kurt Russel movie of all time.
