Summary: Russell and Carpenter at it again!!
Review: This has to be Kurt Russell's funniest role. We all have met people like Jack Burton (Russell's character) who are big talkers who try to act bigger and badder than they are. Russell pulls this off brilliantly in this 80s action/comedy about a Semi-truck driver who finds himself in the middle of an ancient Chinese war in the middle of modern day San Fransisco Chinatown. The whole movie Jack Burton has this tough guy attitude that makes you laugh. Add Mortal Kombat type fight scenes and special effects and a wild and crazy plot and you have two hours of fun.

From the looks of the DVD it is going to be fully loaded with lots of great stuff so I totally recommend this to anyone.

Summary: Great movie in any genre
Review: When this movie came out it seemed to flummox the critics. Because it did not fit within their preconceived notions of what it was going to be and because it also failed to fit within any clearly defined genre, critics were somehwat dismisssive of the film, at best.

But regardless of the movie's genre and regardless of the critics' confusion, this is one very good movie. Excellent dialogue, great performance by Russell and superb score by Carpenter. This movie is nonstop fun. And as Jack Burton says......

Summary: The ultimate popcorn film!
Review: This film has just about everything, action, comedy, drama, LOTS OF SCI FI, crazy Chinese wizards, ancient curses, virgin brides, Chinese women with green eyes, gang fights, ancient Chinese army fights, oriental guys flying through the air while swordfighting and spewing curses, wierd monsters and romance(thin but it's there). And that the first 20 mintutes!

The dialogue is priceless, the action well done, the fight scenes HORRIBLY EXADURATED, and the pace of the film is just right. This film will have your sides bursting by the time it's over.

If you don't like this film, you must be a politition!

Summary: As ol' Jack Burton says, "What the [Heck]."
Review: Anyone who is a fan of great action films must see this movie. Big Trouble in Little China is a great movie that has action, comedy, magic, etc. Jack Burton (Kurt Russell) is one of the greatest action heroes of the 80s, like Remo Williams. If you are considering purchasing this video, then let me be the first to congratulating you on making a wise investment. This is a great addition to anyone's personal video library.

Summary: Jack Burton shakes the pillars of heaven
Review: If a film has great dialogue and characters, other problems can be fixed. If it has those things and few flaws to go with them, it's destined for greatness. Such a film is Big Trouble in Little China.

Enter Jack Burton, loudmouthed truck driver who uses his CB to broadcast his every thought about life. A man too thick-headed to know fear. When his friend Wang's fiancé is kidnapped by a Chinatown street gang, it doesn't matter that he doesn't understand what's going on or why; he drives right into the thick of things and never looks back. When the street gang turns out to be backed up by the Chinese mob, which is further controlled by the bizarre supernatural being Lo Pan and his three Storms, Jack Burton is confused but keeps going anyway. He never does really get it.

The dialogue is absolutely delightful. Even at their worst, the characters can stop to crack a joke. "What's that say?" "'Hell of Boiling Oil.'" "You're kidding." "Yeah, I am, it says 'Keep out.'" From finding their way around the bad guys' underground lair to swapping guns, the interaction between the characters will keep you smiling all the way through.

By the time the action starts in the film, about fifteen minutes in, it gets suddenly so hectic that the first time you see it you'll be as confused as Burton. But that's good--in fact it's great--because the attitude of the movie isn't to figure out the complex underpinnings of the plot, but to charge ahead into danger by walking through the front door like the wind. If there's someone to go rescue, they'll go rescue them.

I confess, it's a cheesy movie. At times it's downright silly, but by the time it gets there we've been so immersed in the mirth of the characters and their utter confusion, their gung-ho shake-the-pillars-of-heaven attitude, that the goofiness is like the cherry on top; the movie wouldn't be right without it. It's a fun, crazy ride from beginning to end, and when it's finished you'll feel dizzy and exhilirated and ready to go on again.

Summary: you know what jack always says.....
Review: Buy this film. Its a movie that everyone should own, completly mad, i would even go as far as to say it's manic. But throughout the madness the film keeps cool, it has no rush and no desire to be anything more than it is. A fun movie. A movie that can only be described as magical. A comic name a comic style a serious movie with style and mega acting talent. Lo-pan is ingenious and original and the three 'really big guys' are a mixture of slapstick and method acting, i love them all. Great fight scenes and a big movie!! Buy it!!

Summary: martial arts choreographer correction
Review: this is not so much a review as it is a correction-the films fight coordinator was jeff Imada, he is a great choreographer and has worked on a good portion of John Carpenter films- including designing the extended alley fight in "they live". When a cool fight scene is needed, he's usually the one who gets the call- forget Yuen Woo Ping and his 30 year old wire work- Jeff is the man! BUT, HE DID NOT developed Jeet Kune Do! He has trained extensively with Dan Inosanto- a person who ACTUALLY TRAINED WITH BRUCE LEE- and it is evident that Jeff uses the concepts of constantly adapting, absorbing what is usefull and getting rid of what isnt- in his choreography he is costantly updating moves, angles, techniques etc. and not ripping off 70's Shaw Brothers' films- BUT, TO BE SURE, HE HAS BENIFITTED FROM BRUCE LEE'S TEACHINGS- HE DID NOT TEACH BRUCE LEE!- I think it is also important to mention James Lew- one of the producers of the film/ he is also a fine fight choreographer in his own right-he was instrumental in bringing together all the martial artists in the film and he also played one of the featured 'good guy' fighters. LASTLY- this is a fun movie that actually showcases some great fights-from a martial arts perspective-it was a pleasure to see a wide range of REAL martial artists-both young and old- showing cool stuff from a variety of different arts instead of being forced to watch actors who've trained for 3 months before doing a scene, while that can be entertaining, it's so much better to see the real deal. If you want to see more of Jeff Imada's stuff check out 'Rapid Fire' for cool "Bruce Lee type" fights starring Jeff's buddy Brandon Lee {Bruce's son} and also 'the Crow' for some serious action scenes. Coincidentally, James Lew is the fight choreograper for 'the Crow' t.v. series and James is also the choreographer for 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer'.

Summary: Can't say enough...
Review: Can't say enough... That seems to be Jack Burton's take on things. If you are a fan of the one-liners and tounge-in-cheek humor, this is for you. Kurt Russell seems to pull off the "Dumb and Dumber" type comedy routine, but he does it without a sidekick. Seeing him preach over the waves of his CB radio express it all. After seeing this flick, I have a new-found respect for the terms "what the hell" and "the check is in the mail."

Summary: A fun movie, and HK-style action from before it was cool
Review: Though I can't quite call it a classic in the same sense as Casablanca, The Ten Commandments, or 2001, this is a very fun movie with great casting and direction for its purpose.

In many ways this movie takes after the Hong Kong style of action cinema, but it was produced long before Hollywood "discovered" Jackie Chan and Jet Lee. Carpenter added just enough from American folklore to make it play better for those unfamiliar with its roots, and the mix is very well done. All of the characters are extreme and sometimes melodramatic, but well-defined, well-cast, and well-played.

This is also a very quotable movie, almost in the league of Ghostbusters and Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Some of the best lines are plot or joke spoilers, unfortunately, so I won't include them here.
