Summary: Everything that you are looking for in a DVD
Review: If you love Big Trouble, then there is absolutely no reason not to buy this DVD. I am specially pleased with the deleted scenes. There are great Jack Burton lines in them that are a must see. Another great installment is the wide screen feature. You see the movie the way you are supposed to see it. Worth the money. Da da di do.

Summary: It's all in the reflexes
Review: This is one my favorite movies of all time. Big Trouble in Little China is just a fun ride filled w/ action, commedy, and Chinease/Japanese culture. The DVD package is excellent. It meets the needs of the truly hardcore fan and is enough to school any new-comers. I just wish that Carpenter would make a sequel or another movie w/ Jack Burton.

Summary: great fun
Review: Big Trouble in Little China is a good movie for only three simple reasons: It's witty, funny, and action packed. Although the plot is a bit corny, (good guy fights bad guy and gets the girl) the movie kept me coming back for more. The special effects are good for a 1986 film, and the acting is great. (Especially by Kurt Russell) The only bad thing is that it's a bit weird and some people may not like the stupid plot. John Carpernter always goes for the weird style when he makes movies (if you've seen the remake of The Thing, also starring Kurt Russell, you'll know what I mean) and may be too weird for some. But if you like action, martial arts, (with some swords and guns thrown in for some good measure) fantasy, and witty dialog, you'll be sure to like Big trouble in Little China.

Summary: FINALLY!
Review: It is so very nice to finally see this Carpenter/Russell gem presented in a version worthy of it!

I remember seeing this movie 3 times in the theater when it was released in 1986. I had gone expecting the same kind of poorly dubbed chop-socky that I loved from Kung Fu Action theatre. Obviously I got a much different experience! This was the first "modern" kung fu movie I ever saw, and I've been hooked ever since.

If you've seen this movie, then you know how good it is. While there are not many fights, there is rip-roaring action and side-splitting laughs. Kurt Russell is perfect as the loud-mouthed trucker Jack Burton, who is rapidly pulled into a world he cannot understand by forces that are beyond his control. As opposed to the heroic role that you have come to expect from Russell, Burton is the big, ugly american who is here for comic relief. Russell pulls off a charming performance as the average joe who is always one step behind the guys who really know what's going on. Guys like Dennis Dun and Victor Wong, who play Jack's old friend Wang Chi and the sorceror Egg Shen respectively. Wang and Egg take charge after what starts as a simple kidnapping for the slave trade becomes a battle for the fate of the world. From that point on the action is fairly non-stop, except for the few scenes where the characters take a few seconds to explain things to each other (a process that the audience greatly benefits from). This movie has everything: Kung Fu, supernatural henchmen, evil sorcerors bent on world domination, ancient curses, evil beasts, brave heros, and *two* love stories!

Now, finally, the day has come that I can acquire this tremendous movie on DVD! The DVD presentation is absolutely fantastic, especially after watching this movie for years on TV and my worn out pan-and-scan VHS copy. The picture looks better than it has since I saw it in initial release. It is much clearer and sharper than the old VHS print, and finally it is letterboxed. The DD4.1 surround is OK, but not tremendous as the rear satellites do not see much use. The deleted scenes are a pretty mixed bag, mostly somewhat longer cuts of scenes that are still in the finished film. The longer cut of the ending is interesting to watch, but I think they made the right decision to go with the shorter version. The commentary by Carpenter and Russell is very entertaining, if not overly relevant to the film. They go along for a good while talking about the production of the film and some of the people involved, but end up basically just sitting there and chatting. They diverge to such varying subjects as the effects of this film on both of their careers, the response of fans, and what their kids have been up to in the last couple of years. It is obvious from this commentary that these are two men who like each other a great deal, and have had fun together on every picture they have made. After this disc and the Thing collector's disc, I am eagerly awaiting the Escape from New York special edition later this year.

If you are a fan of this film and own a DVD player, you owe it to yourself to buy this disc and give it a place of honor in your collection.

Summary: Just like when I first saw it
Review: Big Trouble in Little China has always mystified me. It had corny dialogue, a campy little story (ruffneck turned goodguy and evil magic), and unrealistic marital arts.

However, this movie has always captured my imagination. The undead bad guy. The Storms. Chinese black magic. And ultimately, the classic struggle between good and evil. It is entertaining from beginning to end and when you're done you're suprisingly satisfied.

The DVD offers some good flashback material for trailers and tv spots. The deleted and extended scenes mostly could have been entered in the film but would have made it a painfully long movie to sit thru. But they are good recreational watching for fans of the movie.

Summary: Great movie......Bad audio!
Review: Everyone who's given this a 5 star rating is right on the money with their reviews. However. The audio on this movie is horrible. I dont know if it was a transfer rate error or they just didnt incorporate surround sound back then, but man....the scenes where there is alot of gunfire sound like it was done in mono. 5 stars for the movie 1 star for the audio.

Summary: "Everybody relax I'm here."
Review: I'm glad, from reading these reviews, that my affinity for Jack Burton is not confined to myself. How could you not love this movie!?! It is probebly the funniest unintentional comedy of all time. My only complaint is that a sequel was (or never has been) made.
