Summary: Disney Done Well
Review: One thing we can always count on with a Disney film...there is something for the kiddies and something for the adults that get carried along into the theater with them. This film is no exception. Most of the humor hit me right in my funny bone and the site gags raised giggles, smiles and pointing fingers from my little ones. I enjoyed the usual Disney plot: Cute side characters, bouncy music with sweet lyrics and a life-affirming tale about coming of age in this Big Wide World of Wonders. The art was beautiful with special note to the computer generated stampede scene which was simply breath-taking on the wide-screen. Slide this video into your VCR and sit back with your kids and a big bowl of popcorn to pass around and enjoy!

Summary: A modern classic now a classic DVD!
Review: In 1994, audiences and critics around the globe saw an animated motion picture that would become one of the highest grossing animated movies ever ( now "Finding Nemo" has took that spot), it was called " The Lion King". It tells the coming of age story in the African safari where a young Lion cub named "Simba" is about to become king someday but his evil uncle "Scar" kills his father and Simba runs away because he feels damaged by what he's seen. He meets two lovable pals named "Timon" and " Pumbaa" who teaches him the ways of " Hakuna Matata" ( a.k.a. no worries in African) until he's a full grown lion that must avenge his father's death. A spectacular, action packed and awesome animated motion picture that is full of emotion,laughs, and fun with great animation. The voices are superb such as James Earl Jones, Nathan Lane, Jonathan Tyler Thomas, Matthew Broderick, Whoopie Goldberg, Cheech Marin and Jeremey Irons. The DVD is superb in every single way, it's loaded with great extras like behind the scenes, a new song that was originally cut out, deleted scenes, games and more! it's a perfect christmas gift for every DVD lover's library.

Review: Why did Disney ruin this film by adding a terrible song, cutting dialogue, and making a terrible extras disc! Its sooo bad, it took me half an hour to find the deleted scenes, and i cant even find the original release on my dvd! (If anyone knows exactly where the original theatricial release is then pleaaaase tel me - email me sarahsezzy90210@hotmail.com - i'll be forever in your debt) But aside from the terrible dvd, the actual picture quality is great, and the original film is a classic, (although i do acknowledge that everything disney releases they call a classic) However, you may like the added song but i felt cheated by disney that theyd changed my favourite film, so it depends on your feelings about the original whether or not you buy this dvd

Summary: A Classic for your Collection
Review: I had been meaning to replace my tattered old VHS tape of The Lion King for a long time, but until now I didn't have a good enough reason for doing so. I now have two reasons, one being that I have a two year old son who is beginning to watch Disney shows, the second being that it is now available in a special edition DVD. The movie sounds great in surround sound, especially the stampede, but the extras are disappointing. I put in the second disc to see what was there, and other than the safari (which got boring very quickly) there was nothing much else that kept my attention. There's a lot of stuff however, so I may have missed something. There were also too many previews at the beginning of disc one that had to be skipped over. Never-the-less, The Lion King is an essential movie for any Disney collection, so I would recommend taking advantage of the special edition while it's still available.

Summary: The King of all animated movies!
Review: Upon my 100th viewing of the Lion King, I can't understand exactly why I like this movie so much. Maybe, it's because it was the first Disney animated movie I saw in a movie theater, rather than as a Blockbuster rental. Another reason may be that I like the soundtrack. Also, Timon is one of my favorite characters from the world of Disney sidekicks, and it was an original story that was dramatic, epic and, in many ways, inspired by Shakespearean lore. Actually, to this day, I still claim this to be my favorite movie of all time and it is... However the DVD is another story. Although it is filled with extensive footage, behind-the-scenes documentaries, music videos and production material...there is a video featuring the so-called stars of the Disney Channel performing (only God knows why) a new rendition of "Circle of Life". The movie was also altered...yes, this is not exactly the same version you saw back in 1994, but rather the IMAX version which includes: a different Disney logo color, a radically changed crocodile scene during the "I Just Can't Wait To Be King" sequence, and the not-so annoying SFX dust particles edited so that people will stop saying that the word formed by this particles was "SEX". The 3-D Zazu? Well, eh...is Lion King a 3-D movie? NO. But of course, doing new 2-D animation for the DVD wouldn't have been cool enough, which brings me to the rather unnecessary addition of "The Morning Report," a song so short and inconsequential it might as well had not been added at all. Other than that, the DVD as a two-disc set is not a bad addition to your collection. Great sound and picture quality, not to mention the first widescreen presentation of the film! The movie itself is too good to be ruined by some of these little nuisances, but Disney should try to respect this and many of its franchises a little more than just average.

Summary: Shameful! No pride in these pridelands!
Review: While this is one of my favourite Disney movies, I have just purchased the DVD after YEARS of waiting and will be returning it promptly -- until the day Disney decides to use some of their money to put out *quality* products. Let's face it... the Disney company must have enough money to rule the world by now. They own several resorts, a cruise line, a town called Celebration, an island in the Bahamas... so that begs the question... why are their special effects so cheap and how could they do such a terrible job transferring this movie to DVD? Did we rush this DVD out just to make more cash without putting in an effort? I dunno... the other special features seem pretty good. But you don't have to be a technical wizard of any kind to notice the spot (during both the special edition AND theatrical versions) where the layers switch and Mufasa's voice is actually blacked out during his sentence. His lips move... but nothing comes out. The scene occurs approx 11 minutes into the movie, where Zazu delivers the morning report. Whether you're watching the spoken or sung version, right after the "pounce", a freeze-frame that switches DVD layers causes the background laughter, sound effects and Mufasa to be muted, taking it from "That was very good!" to a disappointing "...ry good". Even the children made sour faces and asked: "What was that?" Instead of explaining the challenges of the DVD-making process, I think I'll just wait until Disney learns how to cut movie properly. These switches are usually done between scenes or at a pause in the scene where viewers don't notice. But then THIS coming from a studio that claimed it was an original story when anyone familiar with Shakespeare will tell you it's Hamlet... much as Lion King II was Romeo and Juliet. As always, the movie itself gets ten stars, but the DVD gets ZERO as far as I'm concerned.

Summary: A must for anyone with a DVD player
Review: This is one of my all time favorite movies and this set is well worth the extra money. The story (for those who have been living under a rock) is about a young lion cub who will one day be king of his pride. His uncle schemes to get rid of him and his father so he can claim the throne. Pride Rock wilts under his command and finally young Simba returns to reclaim his throne and avenge his fathers death. Some people feel it is too violent for children. I disagree completely. This film shows the relationship between all animals and the balance of nature. It deals with death in a very touching and poignant way. There are a few scenes with the animals fighting but it never gets out of hand. It is made very dramatic by the amazing soundtrack. Our children see more violence every day with Powerpuff girls, wrestling and the likes. It is a great film to watch with your children and discuss life and death and how the world is balanced. It explains how we are all part of the 'Circle of Life'.
This set is extraordinary because of its extras. It has two versions of the movie, a few games to play, a safari and many other features. I haven't even explored all of the features yet. The book adds to the fun of the movie and gives you a good behind the scenes look at the film. Also included are adorable drawings of the main characters. This is all packaged in a box that will fit on any DVD rack (unlike my collecters edition of ET which comes in a huge box). This is one of the greatest Disney films ever made and well worth the price for the collectors set. It will be one you'll be glad you purchased.

Summary: The Lion King Finally Debuts on DVD
Review: The Lion King only recently was unseated as the highest grossing animated film of all-time, overtaken by a little fish called Nemo. Its place in movie history is well-deserved - this film is incredible! Disney had done a tremendous job transfering the Lion King to DVD. The video and audio are top notch. Even a film as recent as the Lion King needed to be cleaned up and remastered. Disney, and other studios ought to be strongly commended and supported by consumers for their commitment to restoring and preserving these works of art. I left off one star for this release because the extras, though decent, are not worthy of the "Platinum" label. Disney dazzled DVD lovers everywhere with its Snow White release two years ago - it is still considered one of the greatest DVD releases of all-time. Since Disney raised the bar so high, it hasn't quite been able to match it with the two latest Platinum releases, Beauty and the Beast and the Lion King. The Lion King DVD has a great audio commentary - so good, I'd argue, that it is worth the price of the DVD alone. Beyond that, the extras seem disappointing. Sure, there are many featurettes, image galleries, and some factual information on Africa. Yet it all seems to just be scratching the surface. These extras would have us believe the Lion King was always destined for greatness, with nary a snag along the way. It's difficult to explain, but these extras seem shallow. My complaints about the extras aside, this is a fantastic DVD. Almost nothing would stop me from owning it.

The Dvd is amzing.
I really enjoyed watching with my parents the Timon and Pumbaa's Virtual Safari.
I can't wait to be watching The Lion King again...

Summary: lush but violent animated film gets the royal treatment
Review: This is not my favorite Disney film. While the animation is gorgeous and Nathan Lane is a hoot, the violent themes detract from the story and make it inappropriate for young children -- just the ones who want to see it. I just can't believe that with all the creative minds at Disney the plot they come up with has to include the murder of Simba's father by his uncle, the attempted murder of Simba, and the ultimate death of said uncle as he's ripped apart by hyenas. Gracious, isn't the world violent enough without Disney piling on?! That rant aside, the film is beautiful to look at and hear, and this two-disc special edition gets the royal Disney treatment, with tons of special features including both the extended and theatrical versions of the film; commentary tracks; games; featurettes; and music videos. The film can be heard in English or French with optional English closed captioning. If you love this film, you can't go wrong by adding this special edition to your collection. If you are buying it for young children, let this go for a few years and get a less violent film.
