Summary: En espaƱol?

Summary: WOWSERS!!!
Review: OK lets get this straight... I would have bought this and given it five stars even if it didn't have a new song. But unfortunatly disney decided they needed to add a new crappy song so they could market it and sell more copies. This is a fabulous movie, but i will only be watching the theatrical version from now on. Goodness the new song is tacked on and bad. But since the original is about 7 stars on a five star scale it balances out.

Summary: The Morning Report on The Lion King DVD
Review: Disney has had a hit-and-miss approach with DVDs. So I'm pleased to say that The Lion King like many of their newest releases looks spectacular and sets the standard for the way DVDs should look and sound. In many respects Lion King is the royalty of Disney DVDs as (until recently)it was the highest grossing film with spin offs in every direction. So it's only appropriate that it be packed with royal extras. It is.

You get the original theatrical vesion and the Special Edition with an additional song and animation added to the film. The resolution is terrific here; Disney went back and inked and animated some these sequences after putting together the IMAX version. They realized that the film might not look as great on IMAX (the digital painting and other digital touches weren't quite high enough resolution to my understanding). So vs. releasing a substandard product, Disney opted to redo portions of the film. I didn't see any noticeable differences between the original (which I still have on laserdisc)and the special edition. By far the best looking of the two is still the DVD.

The extras are terrific as well with audio commentary, deleted scenes and other fun bits to be discovered. I could have done without the Disney Stars performing The Circle of Life--it seemed to me to be a cheap commerical for another Disney product. I'm still a bit annoyed that everytime the DVD starts you have to select to start the film otherwise it automatically plays all the coming attractions commericals.

It's already a Disney classic. Now if they would just get around to Aladin on DVD. Why that one's taking so long is beyond me and, technically speaking, it should have come out before The Lion King. At least most of them are finally available on DVD so that's a plus. Highly recommended.

Summary: RETURN OF THE KING
Review: Finally, The Lion King, one of the best animated films of all time has arrived on DVD. This is the story of Simba, the future king of his pride. But after some unfortunate accidents, runs away from his home at pride rock and is found by a couple of outcasts in the jungle. While back home his Uncle Scar is running the show, and not too well. Will Simba take back what is rightfully his?

This is a story about facing your past, and moving on. It is wonderfully animated, and quite simply the best of all Disney's animated films. It's filled with adventure, drama, great music, and comedy. Timone and Pumba are two of the funniest characters of any cartoon ever. The songs are all some of the best in a Disney film. This isn't just great for kids, or fans of Disney movies, this film is great as just a movie, of any genre.

As for the extra's on the disk, they are plenty. Lots and lots of behind the scenes stuff that is very interesting. It lacks the usual Trailer, but does have the Commentary and Deleted Scenes. It also has two versions of the film, but the new song doesn't fit too well into the film. It worked in the play but I don't really think it has a place here, and was worthless. Therefore I prefere the original. This is hands down a must have for anyone who wants a great DVD collection, and also for anyone who just wants to see one of the best movies ever anytime they want.

Summary: Great extras, but 'morning report' is bad addition
Review: I love this movie, for all of the reasons most everyone would list. The new Morning Report song is not as strong as what was in that spot before. I know why they had to do it in the broadway musical, but it was because of the limitations of the stage. They took a strong bit of film animation and made it weak and campy. This is not a Disney for small children, as I can still hear the little boy in the back of the theater saying, "Is the Daddy dead?" and repeatedly, then bursting into loud sobs. But as an adult, I love this movie!

Summary: This DVD is STUNNING! The King is Back!
Review: There are almost no words to describe how well Disney did with this DVD! Lots to see and do, well thought out menuing system, and picture and sound quality that has me breathless! If you have a 5.1 system, this is a required DVD. If you don't, this is a good reason to go get one. (Also a good reason to go get a big-screen TV) Beautifully restored picture combined with Disney's new Enhanced Home Theatre Mix (comparable to DTS!) means you'll be seeing this movie again "for the first time". Disney just redefined the term "No-Brainer".

Summary: Nine years later...still a masterpiece!
Review: I rarely say this about an animated film (with the exception of "Beauty & The Beast") but "The Lion King" is truly one of the best films all around, animated or not. The story writing is exceptional, delving into honor, loyalty, and family. The animation is top notched. I have been waiting for this day when "The Lion King" is available to the public to buy. I missed buying it when I saw the movie and fell in love with it. Today, I immediately went to Target just a block away from where I work and picked up a copy of "The Lion King" on tape (yes, I still live in the dark ages and use a vcr). Good thing I went there early in the morning 'cause there were just a few copies of the movie left. I just finished watching the movie and to this very day, I still get emotional when a grown up Simba climbs Pride Rock. The fight scene between Simba and Scar is still breathtaking. I definitely agree with the critics that "The Lion King" is certainly not for the "Rugrats", "Spongebob Squarepants" crowd. The scare factor of "The Lion King" gets an 8 out of 10 on my scale. Even I still get the chills when a young Simba and Nala explore the ravine where the hyenas live, and naturally the tragic death of a main character. Whoopi Goldberg was hilarious as one of the hyenas. They added both a scare factor as well as a comedy element to the film. Jeremy Irons did an outstanding job as Scar. And of course no one can do Mousfasa (excuse my spelling) as well as James Earl Jones did. After watching "The Lion King" for the first time in many, many years, I am still amazed by how well it has stood up to the test of time in terms of storywriting as well as animation. The quality in animation is subtle but I could still see the improvement. "The Lion King" remains a masterpiece to this very day. It is one of the few family friendly films that I can sit through without going into a sugar shock.

Summary: Fabulous Movie - Always been a favorite of mine.
Review: Since seeing "The Lion King" when it first came out in the theaters - I've been in love with it. The story, the characters, the songs...I had goosebumps all the way through it. This DVD brings back the memories and more. All the extras, from the Safari to the "Circle of Stars" performing "The Circle of Life" are fun and will keep you busy for quite awhile. The new song "The Morning Report" is seemlessly added to the film. Two thumbs up for Disney for releasing this incredible edition of an already incredible film!

Summary: THE ROAR OF EXCELLENCE ON DVD - DISNEY DOES SIMBA PROUD!
Review: "The Lion King" is basically Shakespeare's Hamlet for children. When a young lion's father is murdered by his uncle, the rightful heir to the throne must decide if he is equal to the task of ruling. Brilliantly realized, visually stunning and epic in its scope and entertainment value - this is truly Disney animation at its zenith.
TRANSFER: The good folks at Disney can be proud of their efforts on this 2 disc special edition. The picture - digitally restored and remastered, is something to behold. Colors are more vibrant and saturated. Black and contrast levels are stunning. There are no blemishes, artifacts, aliasing or other digital anomolies to detract from a visual presentation that is worthy of the lion's share. The audio is 5.1 Dolby digital and aggressive in its bass, really giving your surround sound a work out.
EXTRAS: Lots! There are two versions of "The Lion King" - the original and another featuring a new song - "Morning Report". The new song is enjoyable but it neither adds or detracts from the impact of the film - it's just there. There's a featurette on the making of the film, several music videos, some games and the theatrical trailer.
BOTTOM LINE: AN ABSOLUTE MUST!

Summary: Beautiful film and DVD...
Review: ...but, I gave The Lion King DVD itself three out of five stars because of no closed-captioned and/or subtitled feature for the entire special features. I cannot understand why the studio is not doing this for us and it is just very disappointing.
