Rating: Summary: Starts out interesting and ends a little weak. Review: At first the film is very promising. However, towards the end it just fades. The movie paces itself nicely throughout the movie using John Woo's old style elements to accomplish beautiful screenplay, directing, and artful action. Somehow it just changes towards 3/4's way into the film. I feel the director just had a hardtime ending it and simply ended it very awkwardly. It's like he had a good idea and doesnt know how to finish it. The dialogue is really neat and the action is even more impressive utilizing John Woo's old style to give us a refreshing screen play that is gone in Woo's new style of film making as we can see when he arrived to America. John Woo's style has dimished with each passing film and at least this director brings back old memories.Pros: -nice screenplay -interesting dialogue -artful action -great use of coreography and filming quality is great Cons: -as the film progressed the movie slows down -muffled storyline, confusing plot -strange use of languages make it hard to focus on the characters. The movie shifts from cantonese to english to chinese without reason. (the japanese language used by the characters has a point to the movie so I wont complain about its usage).
Rating: Summary: Full Time Enjoyment Review: Bang! Bang! Bang! Thanks to the thrill of Hong Kong cinema, action movies still find a home outside of most US production companies, and that fact has rarely been so admirably demonstrated as it is here with FULL TIME KILLER. Tok and O are both hitmen, struggling to be the best at their game. However, rather than leaving their characters flat and two-dimensional at that, the skilled craftsmen are provided interesting and understandable backstories that (thankfully) aren't related to harsh lessons learned in war or going berserk at the violent death of a lifelong friend. The motivations behind these two are possibly entirely real situations, and that makes their characters -- their similarities and their differences -- far more interesting than most flicks exploring the secret life of assassins. However, the story doesn't stop there: the killers are provided with dubious adversaries, facing doublecrosses by their employers who inevitably hope to pit these hardened men against one another. That, and a pair of police detectives intent upon bringing everyone involved to justice make this one inventive flick with heart as well as mind. The film is staged with wonderful set sequences, many of them reminiscent of the films of John Woo, and the action -- once it cranks up a notch -- is choreographed spectacularly. Also, the film borrows heavily from its American counterparts, lifting ideas and influences of some lesser genre hits and incorporating them into the lives of the two leads. Certainly, Hong Kong cinema is not for everyone. Often times, the action can stretch the bounds of believability, making modern cities seem more like one-horse towns in the Old West, guns that never need reloading. Dismissing these inaccuracies is easy, if you have an intelligent script to keep your interest ... and FULL TIME KILLER doesn't disappoint. If anything, one could fault KILLER for developing too much backstory for the hitmen and the girl that inadvertantly binds them together on their quest to become the best. Too many layers of complexity can detract from the visuals, but, if you're watching closely (no pun intended), you'll be able to guess the outcome of this smart thriller with a kind of childish glee. Rating: Summary: Watch it only if you are a hardcore HK movie fan Review: Doesn't even come close to a John Woo, Ringo Lam or Tsui Hark film. Some interesting action sequences though - the opening is excellent. I found Andy Lau's acting a little over the top. Also, it seemed that every character was coincidentally related to another character in several ways. 2 rival assasins and one assasin's boss is the brother of the other assasin? A few of these I'll buy but there were way too many unexplained coincidences. I would have preferred a longer film that probed more info the relationships. Don't bother with this unless you are die hard HK fan - there are much better HK films out there.

His best remains "Running Out of Time" (starring the same cool Andy Lau), or "The Mission," especially the latter one. See them first, and remember his name. "Fulltime Killer" is in fact co-directed with Wai Ka Fai, but the subdued style is definitely that of Johnny To. The film traces the two free-lance killers, "O" (Takashi Sorimachi, popular Japanese actor), and Tok (Lau). O is the top dog of the killers, but Tok, confident of his professional skills, wants to bring him down in his own style. In between comes a female cleak working at a rental video store (beside the escalator which was shown in one famous Hong Kong film), Chin (Kelly Lin), and the determined policeman Lee (veteran Simon Yam). The gun action of the film is an average one, but sadly, as the story lacks coherent developing, it is often hard to follow what is going on. Johhny To's cool style and oddball humor are not given much chance to be shown, and the result is curiously devoid of tension, even though the actions themselves are decetly done. Some people might find the languages it uses slightly troublesome, for Andy Lau often speaks Japanese, which is very hard to understand (I am a Japanese, and watched it in the origiunal language). But more lamentable thing is the lack of charisma of Sorimachi as "O" whose one-dimentional performance as a killer with a heart lacks convincing power. And as for Andy Lau, he was much better in "Running Out of Time." The film is a result of recent Hong Kong film industry, which tries to capitalize on the name of Japanese actors who are gaining popularity in Hong Kong. But I think the casting here has backfired. I do not say "Fulltime Killer" is bad. I only say you can get better ones from To, underrated Hong KOng filmmaker, and that is "The Mission" which you should see first.

Rating: Summary: Hong Kong cinema is back Review: First, let me address two of the negative views about this film expressed by others. The variation in language is not a mishap. There is no "chinese" language. What people are refering to when they say "chinese" is generally mandarin, which is China's official language. However, very few people in Hong Kong choose to speak mandarin, even if they are able. Cantonese is the langauge of choice (sounds sing-songy...the stereotypical chinese language...ex. "Yong tau, ming bei." and the sort. Anyone who has ever spent time in China is aware that many languages are spoken in all cities. Second, the plot in this movie is not meant to be easily followed or the intricacies uncovered. The intent is obviously to show the plot's complexity by making it complex. A concept lost on those who are not in the businesses of film or theater. I feel that Fulltime Killer is not a movie for everyone. If you are not the type to read subtitles then DO NOT RENT OR BUY. However, if you would like to be exposed to a different style of film than we Americans are used to then give it a go. I mean, people trashed movies like Snatch, Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, and mean Machine initially, due to not understanding the brilliance of English cinema. Now these are some of the top selling films in this country. Don't let the nay-sayers get the better of you...give this film a shot.

Rating: Summary: Question Review: Hong Kong cinema was cool before the days of The Matrix. This movie has a lot of the old feel and some very cool scenes reminiscent of other great action flicks like Bullet in the Head and Brother. However, it feels as though the director was worried viewers wouldn't buy the movie unless it had some mindless and useless CGI effects. The insertion of these feels contrived and forced. Aside from these few trivial flaws, this film boasts some awesome characters (Takashi Sorimachi is way cool) and the women are super hot. Man, how I wish all cops looked like the girl in this movie!! Hong Kongese English is a bear to understand, but dialog is secondary. The shoot-em-up scenes are some of the best. I do agree with other reviewers that the ending seems disjointed. It gets a bit Ecks vs. Severlike at about the 75 minute mark. Overall, a good rent. Check it out, and then make the call to plunk down your hard earned $13 bucks or so for a copy of your own.
