Summary: High-octane candy for your senses
Review: This is a slick, charged movie infused with music, action, and minimal dialogue. Yun Fat's performance is muted but smooth--he's like liquid death. When he chooses to carry 7 or 8 guns instead of one gun with 7 or 8 clips, it makes the action sequences even more smooth and professional. Sorvino is no femme fatale--she's edgy, smart, and has a mean streak. The storyline lacks any real surprises and the ending is all too predictable, but the cinematography, sound, and characters make the movie a fun ride.

Summary: Eye candy of a different flavor.
Review: This was my first foray into the Hong Kong action genre. Not being a fan of American action films by any means, I was prepared to hate this film too. Within moments though I was hooked. Excellent cinematography was the first trait to catch my eye, and then Chow Yun-Fat stepped onto the screen, easily the sexiest hero since a young Sean Connery in the early Bond films.

This film is long on action, but *very* short on gore. Bullets fly and people die, but there are none of the lingering shots of blood spurting or bodies writhing in agony that one sees in American films. The one scene with a copious amount of blood is not violent, but shows the effect of violence after the fact (the final Alan scene). I believe this is a big factor in what made this movie watchable - actually, enjoyable - for me.

The excellent placement of techno, trance and hiphop music in the film adds greatly to the overall effect. While this film has essentially a one-sentence plot, I think it is worth seeing as eye candy and as an introduction to Chow Yun-Fat for the uninitiated (like me).

A raised eyebrow goes to Mira Sorvino's performance. She was surprisingly good in this film. I would like to see what she could do with a role such as Meg in a film with more for her to work with.

From what I have been able to find, the song "Escape From The City Of Angels" by Ithaka was released in 1995 or 1996 on the album "Flowers & The Color Of Paint", on the Fabrica de Sons label. So far no luck on finding a retailer for this label, let alone the album though.

Summary: Far Better Than Corruptor
Review: If you are a Chow Yun-Fat fan get this video instead of "The Corruptor". This movie keeps more with the Hong Kong style of action; the cinematography is great, Mira Sorvino is pretty, and Chow Yun-Fat is ever so cool.

Summary: Not bad.. but not great either
Review: In this, Chow plays a hitman... again. He's assigned to kill a kid, but can't bring himself to do it. Not a bad plot, but the thing I found let it down was that when the bad guys are killing cops and civilians, it's in graphic detail, but when Chow finally starts blowing away the bad guys it's all off screen. So you don't really get any satisfaction of the bad guys getting theirs. At least Chow made his Hollywood debut with this instead of the really disappointing Corruptor.

Summary: Watch it for the great sound if nothing else!
Review: Good 5.1 sound. Too bad some of the more high budget movies don't give the quality of sound that this movie does. I enjoyed this movie. Contrary to the "professional critics", I thought the lead characters did a super job. And quess what folks, no steamy sexy scenes either. Can you believe it? Lots of action from start to finish, similar to Arnold's flicks. Sure everything is predictable. But the cinematography is great as are the action and shoot-em up scenes. I don't think I would buy this movie, but it certainly is worth renting, if action and good dolby digital is your bag. I hope to see more of this guy and gal. I kinda liked the fact that he didn't smile much, it was his character.

Summary: A good movie, just not for me.
Review: Lots of guns, ammo, and bra shots of the leading lady. I pretty much wanted a movie with more finnesse - I've heard better things about Fat's movies, and this didn't measure up to my expectations. If you want a movie filled with random gunfire and a poor plot, then this is your boy. If you want something a bit flashier, say, a bit more like Blade or The Matrix, then this is not for you.

Summary: Not much Substance, but alot of Style
Review: Chow Yun Fat's U.S. debut movie couldn't have been a flashier, action packed rollercoaster ride. Chow and Sorvino are great! The story is pretty generic, and is mostly tailored to show Americans who have never seen Chow , just what he is capable of. Despite the thin script, action fans will love this film!!!

Summary: This movie keeps pulling me back -
Review: I have seen this movie about five times now (everytime it comes on HBO)+ I bought it. I can't put my finger on it - ok, the dialogue isn't the greatest, and yeah, some of the action is cheesy - maybe it's the chemistry of the two stars - I dunno - but I can't watch a lot of violence in movies and this one I could see over and over and - you get the picture!

Summary: Nice try for a US premier
Review: Chow Yun Fat's debut in the US market could have been a lot better than The Replacement Killers. He is known to be one of the best actors in Hong Kong and I didn't think the movie did him justice. There are great gun fight scenes that are typical of his movies, but I didn't feel the director gave Chow a chance to offer anything but gun fights. The story line did not expand enough to make you enjoy the plot of the movie as well as the action scenes. Watch it for great action scenes, but if you want a movie with more substance, try The Corruptor instead. This would have been a much better debut. Be sure to watch his other Hong Kong movies! Those will make you a true fan. Especially if you thought the Replacement Killers was good.

Summary: One of the most intense, action-packed films EVER!
Review: Chow Yun Fat and John Woo can mean only one thing: an incredibly cool action film! This is one of the best DVD movies I have seen to date. Grab a copy!
