Rating: Summary: Aaliyah's Legacy Review: Her stardom was soaring high and the highly talented Aaliyah made her first screen debut. Aaliyah's debut in "Romeo Must Die" will show, not her singing ability, but acting ability. Aside from selling millions of records, this movie and "Queen of the Damned" will be remembered for her participation alone. Her screen presence is electrifying and you won't be able to take your eyes off of her. Aaliyah's energy and enthusiasm made this movie worth while. The beautiful singer/actress definitely had 'IT'.
Rating: Summary: Ultimately disappointing Review: I like Jet Li--not his biggest fan, but I do like the guy and admire his martial arts abilities. As an actor, he has an appealing presence, but lacks the easy charisma of Chow Yun Fat or Jackie Chan. Having heard so much raving about "Romeo Must Die" I went into the film with good expectations. While not a bad film per se, this movie fails to live up to its promise. Li is appealing as the oldest son of Chinese gangster who relocated from Hong Kong to escape a prison sentence. Li's Han instead went to prison so that his father could take Han's beloved younger brother Po to America. The Chinese gang headed by Han's father is in an apparent war with the local African American gang. One of the first casualties of his war is brother Po. His death causes Han to escape from his Hong Kong prison and come to America to find out who killed his brother. Once stateside, by unlikely coincidence, he hooks up with the daughter of the African American gang leader, played by Aaliyah and together they try to search out the answer to the central mystery of what is really going on--since the gang war seems a smoke screen for something else entirely. Li is appealing as Han, especially in his scenes with Aaliyah, although any romantic attachment that would justify the "Romeo & Juliet" inspired title and press hype is sadly missing. The late Aaliyah is surprisingly good in her debut movie role--her loss in the tragic plane crash haunts the viewer as they watch this film. The supporting cast is good and the acting solid. One stand out performance is by Jon Kit Lee as the doomed younger brother of Han. He has a precious few minutes of screen time, but what he has he uses to sparkle and dazzle. I was let down by his character's early demise. He has a budding charisma that should take him far. The rest of the characters are strangely uninvolving however, and Han's quest seems to lack the immediacy it should have. Flashbacks show that Han was more a father to Po than their father ever was, and that one of the reasons Han went to prison in his father's place was to protect his beloved younger brother and afford him a better life. The pursuit of his killer falls a bit flat therefore, although there are some interesting scenes along the way. The best is probably where Li's Han gets suckered into a football skirmish with members of the African American gang and gets the stuffing knocked out of him, until he figures out how to turn the tables. The game is particularly brutal at first because Li is so small in stature next to the Gang members, who pretty much all could be linebackers for a pro football team. There are some fairly good fight scenes with Li and Russell Wong and others. But the plot, even the final betrayal falls surprisingly flat. There are also puzzling aspects to the film. Han's family is said to have come from Hong Kong--no mention of mainland China origins--yet when Chinese is spoken in this film, it is Mandarin, not the Cantonese that is the predominant language of Hong Kong and southern China. Han returns to his brother's apartment at one point in the film, to find it trashed, but seemingly empty. He goes to the garage to find Po's car and finds an important piece of evidence. He comes back to the apartment to find Aaliyah's character waiting for him in the trashed living room. Who did the trashing? Presumeably rival gang members looking for evidence--but the juxtaposition of scenes here muddies the water since we are given no indication that is the case. Since her brother has also just been murdered, it could have been, and possibly was, the gang leader's daughter venting her grief. A minor point, but one that intrudes on the film's narrative. Overall, a predictable, uneven action flick that could have been better had there been more committment to the romantic angle or the "Montague vs Capulet" idea of warfare between two families.
Rating: Summary: Eye candy, but good eye candy Review: This movie is basically just lots of eye-catching martial-arts pyrotechnics, with some plot development thrown in every now and then. Got a problem with that? I didn't think so. The fight scenes are well-choreographed and appropriately frenetic, and Jet Li and Russell Wong appear capable of doing pretty much anything they feel like. The movie is fast paced and efficient, without too much space between action sequences. There are some nice effects here as well, most notably the simulated x-ray shots of bones breaking. So if you want to turn off your brain and enjoy some first-class chop-socky action, this movie is for you.
Rating: Summary: Awesome Review: Awesome film, probably the best of jet's films made by a american team, it falls short of a 5 as it is not as good as films such as twin warriors. Aaliyaah is an awesome actor, its very sad to hear that she could not star in the matrix 2 after dying in a plane crash. But this film, actually has a decent story line with good fight sequences, russell wong, the guy he fights at the end is amazing im surprised he does not have a bigger part. This is a film you should see it shows that jet li can act. i would give this 4 and a half stars not just 4.
Rating: Summary: Hip Hop meets Kung fu Review: This is a very entertaining movie. It's east meets west in modern times. An ex-cop (Jet Li) escaped prison in China to find out who killed his brother in the U.S. He then meets the daughter of the suspected killer (Aaliyah) and then sparks fly. All hell breaks loose as romance developes between the two from opposite sides. There is action galore and lots of laughs. This movie shows of the many skills of Jet Li as a martial artist as well as an actor.

Rating: Summary: Romeo Must Die Review: ...I loved this movie. Sure, for the martial arts purists, you wanted more martial arts action, but overall it had the right mix of martial arts, car chases, explosions, and a fresh, edgy feel to it. In the clip on the making of the movie included in the DVD version, the producers wanted to get a fresh unique East meets West, hip hop, kungfu kind of weird appeal and I think they achieved it. I loved Aaliyah, she impressed me with her ability to act, she is so musically talented and has great sex appeal in a cute girl next door type way. Jet was awesome in his fight scenes as usual, but I found myself replaying the DVD and watching the scenes where Aaliyah and Jet interact. There's some chemistry there and hint of romance, but unfortunately that was not fully developed. I thought the plot of these two minority groups having a turf war to be in the realm of possibility. I also found the movie to have some light humor to balance out some of violence and destruction. Maurice, the bumbling foil of the movie was classic. It is an entertaining movie.

Rating: Summary: Romeo&juliet meets jet li. Review: WOW! This movie is really quite amazing. Romeo must die is loosely based on romeo and juliet with jet li. Isn't that sweet?? Well i think it is. Romeo must die is more than a action/martial arts movie. It's a drama. It has a great script and jet li does an EXCELLENT job of acting. I rarely give martial arts movies 5 stars but this one deserves it all the way.
