Rating: Summary: Not great as we thought well be but very entertaining film. Review: Jet Li is quite good in his first american lead in Romeo Must Die. True his fighting skills in most movies like Lethal Weapon 4, The Defender or Black Mask. He toned down his passion style of fighting for the picture. Still it has some fun action sequences. Some of the film dispointment is Li fight scenes (about 25%) are completely CGI effects, which doesn`t fell right for the movie. The plot is good and some good suspense and surprises. Aaliyah(in her first movie) is surprisingly good in the second lead and her acting is better than expected. The cast are good actors like-Isaish Washington(True Crime), Russell Wong is excellent in the film and Delory Lindo(Ransom, The Cider House Rules). Well directed(if not quite great but good looking) for the first director: Andrzej Bartkowiak(He was a cinemagraphy films like-LW 4 and Devil Advocate). Maybe next time Jet Li will be back on the top on his fighting style on his next film(we hope).DVD`s picture quality is excellent on a anamorphic Widescreen(2.35:1) Scope and Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround is also excellent. Nice special features like 13 behind the scenes documentaires and 3 music video also. Grade:B+. Panavision.
Rating: Summary: Uninspired, but Fun Review: Like many films today, "Romeo Must Die" seems to be all about style over substance. Blazing guns and flying fists are intercut with beautiful girls and the occasional comic relief, but whatever high-falootin' ambition the movie may have had during the conception of the screenplay quickly dissolves into eye candy and emotion a few minutes in. In this case, however, that's not such a bad thing. The convoluted plot intertwines two stories; the classic revenge tale featuring Jet Li, and the almost equally archetypal gangster-wants-to-go-legit theme, loosely held together by Aaliyah. Through happenstance, each character finds their destiny dependent on the other, thus providing the meat of the story. Both Li and Aaliyah prove that they are able to carry a major motion picture and each has their own undeniable charisma. Unfortunately, Aaliyah's confidence and flirty stage business is never exploited to develop the romantic elements alluded to in the movie's title. What viewers do get, however, is a fairly well-paced action film with one of Hong Kong's best action stars. Fight sequences are very well done and feature a clever, never-before-seen special effect that I won't mention here. Perhaps a bit too much wire-work (especially for those not initiated in Hong Kong martial-arts/fantasy films, like those of Tsui Hark), but exciting and worth seeing again. I'll end this review with a post script on two wonderful Asian stars that I really hope to see more of in American cinema: Russell Wong and Francois Yip. Both are gorgeous faces that really deserve to be seen more. Recommended
Rating: Summary: Romeo must... i repeat, must... die Review: I have never really been a Jet Li fan. I think he's to one dimensional and he's always the though guy. Not only that, he uses wires in virtually all of his action sequences. When I started to watch this film, i was going to watching it as if i've never seen a Jet Li film before. But my opinion eneded up the same. It was a bad movie, with bad acting and average action sequences. It was just a macho movie, with no point. If you want a martial arts film with all the stunts done without wires and where it's fun and exciting, get a Jackie Chan flick (although his recent couple of films have had obvious wire stunts in them, he is 50 yoou know). Jackie Chan is the best action star there is, was, and ever will be. If you want quality, get Jackie Chan. Garbage, get Jet Li.
Rating: Summary: More than just a great martial arts flick Review: I liked this movie... unexpectedly! I say that because the reviews were so bad, but I wanted to see Jet Li nonetheless. So starting with low expectations, I was really impressed. OK, let's start out by saying that Jet Li is a terrific athlete and martial artist. In this flick, some of his stunts are wired but that doesn't take away from him in the least. All the fight scenes are inventive and crisply executed. The serious scenes, like the Hong Kong jail and the final fight with Kai, are packed with action and creativity. The funny scenes, like getting away from the gang of bodyguards and the football game fight, are just the right combination of comedy, parody, and serious moves. So the fighting is great. See it for this alone. But two other things stand out, which provide the unexpected pleasure. First, the characters and relationships. Although the plot is a little muddy (OK other reviewers, maybe it's downright turgid!), it still makes sense and is much better than most martial arts flicks. But the plot allows for excellent character development. I was surprised at the dialog that exposed the depth of both father-son relationships... the brother-sister relationship... the betrayal by the #2 men... the black vs. Chinese gangs... the subtelties you don't pick up until the second viewing... and many good scenes. Somebody tried to put together a great script. They didn't quite suceed, but it's still pretty darn good. Second, the love story just worked. It was not overdone, and developed slowly and believably during the film. There's no sex (unfortunately, given how great Aaliyah looks!) but there's still a tenuous initial connection growing into a subtle but effective matching of unlikely bedfellows. The Romeo and Juliet theme is not overplayed at all... just a realistic story of two people from different camps but with a common perspective. Hot it's not, but rich it is. Finally (I know this is three, but give me a little Li-way), the overall quality is excellent. The music, cinematography, motorcyle and car chases, smart & funny gags thrown in, and all the other technical aspects are first rate. So my friends, see Romeo Must Die if you want a martial arts flick with a little extra kick and emotion!
Rating: Summary: They faked it. Review: I like Jet Li but this movie is so faked it was impossible to get into the story. We are suppose to beleive this is the Bay Area of California but we see the Vancouver B.C.'s skyline, and locations and mountains, scene after scene, only the license plates and flags have been changed to protect the innocent. I just could not take any of it seriously. Lets have more truth in location. Pleeeease!
Rating: Summary: Jet's best American film Review: Since coming to the US, Jet has been given a variety of akward roles. Romeo Must Die was probably his best film outside of China. The cast flowed smoothly together, and the story had a few twists.
Rating: Summary: Bad Story, but Jet Li Review: Why is it that movies with Kung Fu elements never really satisfy, except of course for the Matrix and Crouching Tiger. The authors of the story have tried to make a modern day Romeo and Juliet, in this case Asian Jet Li and black Aaliyah. This is all fair and well, but there is no real story to it. They come together, are good and survive in the end. Thankfully there are some very good Kung Fu scenes by Jet Li which makes it fun. where Jackie Chan is more comedy, Jet Li is certainly art and well choreographed. The scene when he is playing football is a good one, the other is where he beats up some dudes with a hose. With an hour and 50 minutes it's too long, so just skip to the fighting parts on the DVD.
Rating: Summary: cool movie Review: I rented this movie at blockbuster and i liked it. Jet Li's martial arts was fantastic and i like the part at the store where Maurice calls Han dimsan. My rating for this movie is a 10 out of 10.
Rating: Summary: The L.I.Y.A.H. & Jet Li? Review: Just one question that remained on my mind throughout this horrid film. Who decided that Aaliyah should be put with someone as old as Jet Li? And if he isn't that old he looked way older than Aaliyah. He looked as old as Delroy Lindo. But back to the issue at hand...rating this movie. This film was pathetic. Delroy Lindo, Isiah Washington and of course ( Miss Aaliyah ) were pretty good. They moved the story along. The African-American parts of the story were very interesting. The problem I had with Jet Li's part and the scenes with the Chinese actors bored me because it relied on subtitles. I tolerate subtitles in foreign films but I didn't expect so many in this film. Just because people are Asian, Hollywood acts like they can't speak English? Anyway, the film was supposed to be a modern-day Romeo and Juliet. Well it failed miserably. Aaliyah and Jet Li had no chemistry. It was easy to see what he saw in her but I didn't buy Aaliyah falling for Jet Li. I just didn't feel that at all. Like Dangerous Minds, Romeo Must Die is another case of the movie's soundtrack being ten times better than the film. My advice? Don't watch this and don't dare spend money on this. Aaliyah maybe your thing but even her impressive film debut doesn't push any sparks with this one. This film had a lot of potential IF they had a stronger male lead. I'm sorry Jet Li wasn't cutting it at all.
Rating: Summary: Romeo & Juliet Review: Don't be fooled by this title I mean its is nothing what it seems. It's about Han(Jet Li) escaping from prison to search for his brother Death. While on the hunt he runs into Aaliyah(R.I.P) that plays trish and father of a Business man dad.Hans dad a mobster, faces off with trish family cus of misunderstanding of Which Russell Wong plays a big part of.This movie is not that bad,it just lacks alot of action just alot of running around but the matrix moves are really cool though.
