Summary: My wife really loved it
Review: I thought it was pretty good. The cinematography is gorgeous, of course, and the strangness of the battles half on ground and half in the air is intriguing, but ultimately I had a hard time becoming involved with the characters. My wife didn't have that problem. Maybe this is a martial arts chick-flick. It's time they made one.

Summary: Incerdibly Boring
Review: This movie was stupid. The plot was uninteresting, the "stunning" fights were boring, and the charecters were not endearing. I had to fast forward through the last half hour of the film just to keep my sanity.

Summary: Beautifully shot, and the movie's okay too.
Review: I thought this movie was gonna be so stupid. But it must have been me that was stupid because i spent most of the movie with my mouth hanging open. I haven't seen a more beautifully shot movie since Hype Williams lenswork on "Belly" and John Woo's vision of "MI:2" The movie is just stunning and it helps that the two female leads are both good actors and convincing martial artists... and we all know Chow Yun-Fat is the man. Buy it.

Summary: Sorry, I don't get it
Review: The plot was confusing, and once I did understand who everybody was (more or less), I didn't really care. Who was the old man? Was he some kind of teacher? Why was he keeping the sword? How did that little girl get trained anyway? She was a governor's daughter and was unsupervised her whole life? What was this temple they kept talking about? What was all the hoo-ha in the beginning about the warrior's meditation anyway, what did it have to do with anything? It was like this was the fourth of a series and you were already supposed to know all the background.

Some of the fight scenes were pretty, especially the bamboo tree scene, but it was laughable to me generally. People flying? Based on what? The Matrix had an excuse, a background, that permitted one to believe that it was possible for the characters to defy gravity and so forth. Here they just start flying around without any information aside from some vague reference to a manual.

Can you spell ``exposition'' in Chinese?

Summary: I must be missing something - I couldn't finish it!
Review: Boring, Ridiculous special effects. Slow.

Summary: Overhyped
Review: I'm assigning a three-star rating to a four-star movie, simply because of five-star overexposure.

This is perhaps the greatest martial-arts movie ever made. It has an intriguing plot, wonderful acting, outstanding cinematography, and impeccable direction.

And, at the end of the day, it's still a popcorn martial-arts flick. It's a little like writing and directing the best porn flick ever; you might have accomplished something remarkable, but it's still a porn flick. The fashion in which this movie was overconstructed through the cinema awards ceremonies led to a real letdown for me. Yes, it was good fun. Yes, it had its moments. No, it wasn't even close to being in the same league as films like _Gladiator_. Not even the same universe.

Check your expectations at the door. Forget you ever got oversaturated with the name 'Ang Lee' at the Oscars, and you'll have a delightful time.

Summary: one of the best films of all time
Review: Whether you like martial arts or not, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is a marvelously powerful film. The special effects are the best I've ever seen, so good that you believe all the action is real. And the story line is fascinating and so moving. The acting is superb and the scenery beautiful. The use of the natural mandarin language made the movie even more believable. This is a film that can be watched again and again thus well worth the cost.

Summary: Very, very disappointing.
Review: This movie was terrible. I honestly can't believe anyone liked it, and the amazing thing is that so many people do seem to have liked it. The plot was absurd. The characterizations were thin and implausable. The film gets points, I guess, for being unusual. But I thought it had a scarcely-veiled pandering attitude to women, especially the long, boring "abduction" sequence where the star finds true love with her captor. I like art house films, so it pains me to see mildly imaginative PC garbage passing for serious art. Ang Lee, try again. You're talented. You can do better than this.

Summary: An amazing waste of time
Review: I've often heard of films being over-hyped before, but none defines the peculiar tastes of film critics than CTHD. The plot was laughable, the special effects were ludicrous and the entire thing left me with the feeling that I would have enjoyed it more had it been shorter.... A good hour and a half shorter. This would have made a decent short film but as a stand alone movie it is an atrocity. Unless you have a fetish for foreign films or really want to waste a three dollar rental and most of an evening avoid this piece of tripe

Summary: strange...but good
Review: I really enjoyed this movie, but I hated the ending. Also, I enjoyed the fighting sequences of the movie. The story line was excellent as well. It also had very dramactic moments. Even though the movie was subtitled in the theater, you still could sit back and enjoy this action packed and dramatic flick. That about covers it!!!!! SEE IT TODAY!!!!!!!
