Summary: Monkey don't see; monkey don't do.
Review: This movie was so bad that my wife left half way through and my friend and I looked at each other afterward with apish grins wondering why she was so much smarter than we were. We should have aped her and left before we spent any more time monkeying around.

There was no character development and no character motivation. The makeup was great; the wire work was bad. The physics of the movie was absurd. I was particularly amused by how bad the crash landing on the Lincoln memorial was and how he just popped right out of the pod afterward, fresh as a daisy.

If you were planning to see this, I don't mean to throw a monkey wrench into your plans, but skip it and read the book instead.

Summary: Waste of (money)
Review: Not worth the effort or money, I used fast foward so many times just to say I did watch it. Stick to the original.

Summary: Enjoy it for the updated version
Review: I grew up watching the original planet of the apes series, so of course I was interested in the remake/movie of it, and I was satisfied. The sets are great, the character acting and scenarios are well thought out, and it was an enjoyable couple of hours. If anything, it's just a visual feast of entertainment; yet keep your eye out for little cameos that relate back to the original series: for example, Charlton Heston (one of the original humans in the old series) is now the 'head ape' in the movie. 'Apes fans would surely enjoy this type of thing.

Summary: Very Poor Characters
Review: This version lacks one of the things that made the previous one a great film: character development.

Summary: Terrible
Review: I thought this was one of the worst movies ever. I was really dissapointed. The Apes looked fake and the script was terrible. I was so bored with this movie that I fell asleep after the first half hour. I kept looking at my watch wondering if it would ever end.

The original Planet of the Apes series was orders of magnitude better. Save you money and don't buy this DVD. If you really want it - I'll be happy to sell you mine.

Summary: Nice looking garbage
Review: Tim Burton has long been the king of strange. His cinematic worlds take on a touch of the bizarre, no matter what the subject is. He also loves to make beautiful pictures, esp. those that take place in dark worlds. This picture is no exception.
If you like to go to movies to see wonderful make-up, realistic full-size monkeys ... er, apes and a few moments with terrific stunts and special effects, then you may well love this movie. If you love to have your inteligence insulted at the same time, this is a perfect vehicle.
From the opening scene, there is very little doubt of where this film is going. Of course, considering it is a remake ... um, revisioning of the classic, where it is going is not too much of a surprise. Of course, in interviews, Burton stated the ending was more shocking than the original. I contend this could only happen if you fell asleep for most of the movie, as the ending is pretty much telegraphed throughout the flick.
The plot is rather weak. Unlike the original, which developed characters and slowly built up to a shocking climax, this film pretty much goes on full bore (you can use either definition here, as both fit). It plods along without much guidance. And, forget character building. When one of the humans tied closely to our lead characters sacrifices himself for some of the others, there is absolutely no sympathy or empathy. He is just dead; so what!
There is one clever plot device that deals with the fact that apes can't swim (or rather are afraid of the water). This is largely brought in to cause major debates about the ending of the movie, if any one would really care to debate. It really serves no other purpose, although Burton tries to throw you off track here.
The primary reason I can see for anyone recommending this is to see just how beautiful the vision is. On that point alone, I upped the review from 1 star to 2. Nice cinematography, nice makeup, nice monkies; dumb movie.

Summary: Never go by the Critics......
Review: that's what I always say. The remake of Planet of the Apes was good. Mark Wahlberg did a really good job, Helena Bonham and Tim Roth were terrific. So what did everyone expect? You had a good looking astronaut, a cute ape with a crush on him. A sexy blonde, an evil ape and a humorous ape named Limbo. It had something for everyone.

Summary: A BAD, BAD FILM
Review: IVE SEEN SOME HORRIBLE FILMS IN MY DAY. IVE SEEN SOME WITLESS PLOTS, SOME NEEDLESS PLOT TWISTS....BUT THIS "FILM" TAKES THE CAKE...IF YOUVE ENJOYED SUCH CLASSICS AS POLICE ACADEMY 5 OR WEEKEND AT BERNIES 2 ...THIS MOVIE IS FOR YOU..APES MAY HAVE PRODUCED THIS FILM, BECAUE I WOULD HAVE LOVE TO HAVE BEEN IN THE ROOM WHEN THIS INANE STORY WAS READ ALOUD. THE FACT THAT PEOPLE APPROVED THE RELEASE OF THIS FILM SHOWS THAT FOX EXECS NEED A SERIOUS HOUSE CLEANING..THE ONE STAR IS GIVEN FOR MAKEUP ONLY...EVERY OTHER DETAIL OF THIS FILM MAKES IT, A BAD, BAD FILM.

Summary: Evolutionarily Inferior
Review: It is probably safe to say that the conclusion to the original 1968 "Planet of the Apes" is one of the most famous endings of any movie, period. The ending of that movie alone guaranteed its entry into history, but the 120+ minutes that preceded it were also worth it. "Apes" had a sense of humor, a sly wit, and a point to make about its material. When it was released, there was a measure of grousing about how far it had deviated from Pierre Boulle's novel (which is worth reading on its own), but the results were strong enough to stand on their own.

Flash-forward to 2001. Now we are graced with a remake, or a re-imagining, or a re-something, of "Planet of the Apes." Is this drawn from the book? Not really. A new version of the movie? Not really. It's a bland series of compromises that mostly seem to have been cobbled together for the sake of a limp trick ending (one which anyone with half a brain could see something miles off).

There are so many individual things wrong with the film I'm not sure where to begin. The casting of Mark Wahlberg is definitely a deficit -- he's so ruminative, apologetic and glum that he manages to undermine most of the energy in any scene he's in. He's a lousy action hero, frankly. He doesn't make you believe in the impossible.

Wahlberg isn't the biggest problem, though -- there's the story, which boils down to a bunch of hastily-assembled chases and confrontations that don't evoke any emotional reactions from the audience. Much of the movie is underlit and unappealing; what little visual imagination there is has been invested on the ape makeup. The single finest thing about the movie IS the ape makeup, actually -- it's so good, so expressive and realistic, I wanted a better movie to be wrapped around it. No such luck.

Another big mistake is to make the apes the most interesting things on screen. The humans, by comparison, are so drab that they don't hold our attention, and we wind up not caring about them. If the movie had picked up on that and run with it -- say, by making us root for the apes more than the humans in a showdown between them -- they could have had a really fine piece of work here. Instead, it reminded me all too much of Tim Burton's earlier "Mars Attacks!": all setup and no payoff. Here's a movie that is hemmed in by the kind of thinking that seems more appropriate for a TV show: disposable, cheap, brainless, uninvolving.

Tim Burton is a talented director, but he only seems to be as good as his material. The Grand Guignol slam-bang horror of "Sleepy Hollow" was eye-opening. This one's sleep-inducing.
