Rating: Summary: GOOD SERIAL WITH A YOUNG LLOYD BRIDGES Review: Universal actually made two serials based on the Agent X-9 comic strip, one in 1937 and this one from 1945, starring a young Lloyd Bridges in the title role.
Set in 1943 on Shadow Island off the coast of China, which is neutral in the war, and thus a hot spot for agents from all sides of the WWII conflict. A scientist makes a discovery that aviation fuel can be manufactured cheaply by mixing an element called "722" with distilled water.
The Evil Japanese agent Nabura hatches a plot to steal the formula. Lynn Moore (Jan Wiley) an Australian agent (with an American accent) learns of the plan and informs her superiors. The U.S. sends in Secret Agent X-9 (Bridges) to foil the plot. Chinese agent Ah Fong (Keye Luke) becomes X-9's partner.
Along the way we have all of the action and intrigue you'd expect to find in a serial about WWII spies. Bridges does a great job as our hero and a good supporting cast includes vet of many Charlie Chan Movies, Key Luke.
Well done serial
