Rating: Summary: Action-packed! Review: Ronin is a good action film with a list of great stars such as Robert DeNiro, Jean Reno, and Jonathon Pryce. It is filled with incredible car chases and shootouts that will keep you on the edge of your seat. It is also a mind-bending mystery that will keep you thinking. If you are an action fan that hasn't seen this movie, I highly recommend it.
Rating: Summary: VROOOOM !!SCREEETCH!!VROOOOM!!SCREEETCH!! Review: As my brilliant review summary suggests, the pacing on Ronin was a little off. Its slow one second and then racing at the next. What is incredible is the car chases. I know its been talked about to death in these reviews but they are incredible. Frankeheimer has created the best car chase in film history, even better than Bullet, T2, and Die hard with a Vengence combined (Blues Brothers comes close though). Great shootouts but the acting was sufficient. MGM is doing a great job with their DVD's. They keep their prices low while giving the consumer lots of extra features. A good value for action fans.
Rating: Summary: The absolute BEST car chases that you have or will ever see! Review: This was a great movie about mercineries, honor, and car chases. The movie centers on a group of mercineries - left over agents from the cold war - who were gathered together to steal a suitcase. The 'thieves for hire' are betrayed by their own. First by one of the mercineries, then by the people who hired them. It was an original film that was well acted and well directed and deserves its due credit for that, but it's edge of your seat car chase scenes are what make the movie. Grant it - the plot was a little hard to follow, but in my experience that draws you into the movie more. I'd rate it along side of 'The Usual Suspects'. Great movie - 5 stars!
Rating: Summary: BAD JOB ON SOUND EDITING Review: I notice there are already quite a few opinions on this movie as a whole, however, no one mentioned how poor the sound quality was throughout the movie. Maybe it's just me, but I found it so hard to hear what the actors were saying, (especially during the car chase scenes), that I had to turn on the subtitles. The actors' voices were muffled and washed out. Maybe someone messed up in translating this movie to the DVD format.
Rating: Summary: Disappointing Review: Yet more proof that it takes more than a great cast to make a great movie. De niro puts in his most unremarkable performance yet opposite the comatose Jean reno. A superb car chase is just about all that this film has to offer.
Rating: Summary: 1 star is being generous Review: I cannot believe that past reviewers feel that the car chases in this movie were a redeeming feature. A bunch of evenly spaced cars and diagonal weaving - it was truly pathetic. The entire movie was rehashed garbage. 'The mystery of the case', was done better in Pulp Fiction. In this movie it seemed like it was the result of the director running out of money - the movie finished in mid-sentence. I would not wish this movie on my worst enemy - I came out feeling as if I had been robbed. The gritty realism of the acting was probably due to the dismay felt by the cast at their own flagging careers. De Niro acted as if ashamed - very well he might and indeed he should be. 'nuff said.
Rating: Summary: Very nice movie.. read further if you want DVD version Review: I dont consider myself a great movie critic.. I never fill these things out .. I think in this case potential DVD buyers (DVD only) need a warning. If you use a DVD player for your tv set you shouldnt have a problem with this. If you use a DVD-ROM drive for your PC you WILL encounter some very annonying and pesky problems. 1. There is an included software DVD decoder on the disc.. this is a great idea imho.. but the autoplay feature on this is extremely slow and annoying. I advise you to DISable autoplay for your drive. Every time you put this DVD in, or even hit play on your dvd software, it launches the autorun.. It takes about 30 seconds just to bring up one window with two buttons on it. It has even locked my system a few times.. I advise you to NOT install the software it prompts you aobut even if you do not have a dvd player. All the other features of the DVD are VERY nice. I loved the feature-length commentary by the director (John Frankenheimer), and the alternate ending was interesting as well (glad they cut it out tho =P ). Let me say again this is a great movie.. just horrible coding and lack of thought went into the software included on the DVD. (I filled out the little customer response card that came with it.. and attached a letter informing them of my disapproval of the aforementioned things.. you should do the same) Sorry to take so long, enjoy the movie
Rating: Summary: Strange Review: It was one of the wierdest movies I have seen. Strange, but I enjoyed it
Rating: Summary: Excellent car cases and director commentary. Review: I'm a big DeNiro fan and maybe bias that way, but he did a great job and so did Reno and the rest of the cast. The car case scenes were excellent. I found them to be very believable even though I have never been in a French town. I found myself leaning alittle side to side and hoping they'd make it through their outragous situations... The Director Commentary by Frankenheimer was very good. He was very interesting and even gave his own tutorial tips in filming, car cases and weapon firing. I watched the movie, then listened to the commentary, and watch the movie again with even more pleasure. I hope you like it too...
Rating: Summary: Classy, well crafted, but hard to follow in parts Review: I feel that the car chases, (which are excellently done) probably became too central in the mind of the director, and if for any reason at all, the movie loses points for this. The dirty old clothes, the obvious desperation of the principal characters to do their job, get the money and run away, all added believability. Hey, these are not nice people. They are all crooks, killers and soldiers-of-fortune for hire. They don't care about innocent bystanders getting killed, because they've seen it all before and they are desperate to earn their money, at any cost. Unfortunately the director probably spent so much of the production budget on the (overly long) car chases, that he felt compelled to include every foot of film with a good bit of one or other of the chases. This must have made the movie too long and in an attempt to edit it down to size they probably cut out some important scenes which should have been there to hold the film together and provide answers to some questions. I had to watch the bag-swap scene 4 times in slow motion to make sense of it. Realism 5 car chases 4 continuity and editing 3. But I will buy it because it has a classy, gritty realism, not often found.
