Review: I found this movie very depressing. Come to think of it, the making of it was great. But the story was very poorly written. However, it's a good one to rent and watch at home. Not really worth to spend time and money at theaters.

Summary: The Documentary Was More Exciting
Review: Before I saw this movie I watched the documentary on the history channel, which was way more intriguing. It was interesting to hear about the rescue of the other fishing boats and what the rescue divers went through during the storm. The movie portrays the crew of the Andrea Gale as a group of common heros. Against better judgement, they decide to go through the most dangerous part of an incredible storm instead of waiting it out or trying an alternate route. The boat rocks, some men fall out, windows break, the boat capsizes, they drown. Not very exciting, and the storm sequences should have been a little more exhilirating in my opinion. I gave it 3 stars because it was interesting, and accurate as far as the storyline goes, but as far as excitement goes....it's definately lacking.

Summary: The Perfect Storm was NOT the perfect movie
Review: The "Perfect Storm" is not the perfect movie. Directed by the notable Wolfgang Petersen and based on the actual story of the worst storm in history. In 1991 the crew of the Andrea Gail, a Glouster Mass. longline swordfishing boat, headed deeper into the Atlantic Ocean than usual for a fishing expedition. Upon her return, the Andrea Gail heads right into the "Perfect Storm", a massive divergance of three separate weather systems, that prevents her safe return home. The best special effects were shown in the TV trailer. The special effects recreating stormy skies, violent seas and the giant waves were impressive. The story loses reality when one realizes, as I (a recreational boater) did, that no knowledgable Captain would have ever ventured out into this impending severe weather scenario. All in all, I found it entertaining but I did not like the ending. The perfect storm deserves viewing, but you should probably rent it.

Summary: A summer movie getting in the way of a great story
Review: "The Perfect Storm" is a great example of Hollywood taking a true event that needs no embellishment or standard schmaltz to make it engaging, adding the embellishment or schmaltz anyway, and ending up with a weaker product for it.The storm of 1991 grabbed the attention of the nation for a reason. I watched all the reports of the storm from hundreds of miles away, spellbound and horrified. This film, which purports to put us in the center of the storm, fails to do the same. The problem is that we've been lulled into "it's a typical Hollywood movie" coma by the ridiculous speeches put into the mouths of all the actors, particularly George Clooney, who is forced to act as though being the captain of a small commercial fishing vessel isn't work, but a higher calling akin to being a priest or a brain surgeon or a kindergarten teacher. Every character gets their moment in the sun so that we'll feel their loss when it happens, and as a result, the movie takes FOREVER before we get anywhere. Ironically, the storm is somewhat skimped on: There's a brief scene which utterly fails to explain what the storm is, how it occurred and why it's noteworthy. Instead, we get every possible disaster at sea aboard the Andrea Gail first. Of course, since no one from the ship participated in the filming of this movie -- for obvious reasons -- the fact that the whole sequence has been made up out of whole cloth makes it even less engaging. And for all the talk of how much money was involved in creating the special effects, it all looks remarkably like a Hollywood invention, not a real ship at sea -- unless ships at sea are now lit like Hollywood sound stages. The poor actors trapped in this film do excellent work with the too-standard material, and make the film more watchable than it ought to be. But ultimately, I found myself wanting to watch "Jaws" again, or re-read "The Old Man and the Sea," the two stories the filmmakers desperately aped and swiped from, coming up with a product that measures up to neither. This is a renter.

Summary: Storming Out
Review: I'll sum it up fast and easy - not a good movie! As a matter of fact, I'm a little tired of hearing how great this movie was. I felt the performances were forced, and at times downright cornball as they come (for example, witness the scene between John C. Reily and his son in his truck). Horrible, horrible, horrible. What's good about this movie? Stunning visual effects. That's about the only reason to watch this film.

Summary: Perfect Storm Is A Perfect Movie!
Review: I thought this movie was perfect in every way. Although George Clooney's part is upstaged by the special effects, the actor nonetheless gives a star performance, considering what little he had to work with. George Clooney made Billy Tyne very real, like a modern day Captain Ahab after the greatest catch of all. All the actors and actresses gave great performances - turning what easily could have become a cartoon into a believable experience. While I agree that no one really knows what happened on the Andrea Gail or how the crew drowned, folks should not complain considering they tolerate all the liberties taken with movies made of historical events like Titanic, with the Bible like Moses and Jesus, and the constant horrible interpetations of classical literature like Victor Hugo's Les Miserables or Shakespeare's plays! This movie stuck fairly well to the facts and was well done from fearful start to frightful finish. The nightmare of a Bobby's death in a storm is an obvious cue as to what is going to happen and perhaps detracts from the movie. However the nightmare also reflects the constant fears of family members when their husbands and sons go out to sea. This is much like preparing for a flight. One knows the plane could crash, and may well suspect this time it will. In Perfect Storm the viewers are like those watching Titanic or Moby Dick. They know the characters are doomed from the start. It is the skills of the producers, writers, directors, and actors showing us their fates that makes the story real and entertaining. In this - all succeeded superbly in making the Perfect Storm into the Perfect Movie!

Review: Stupid but handsome wooden stars. Factually absurd for a movie that purports to be based on reality. Special effects were no big deal for all the hype, look downright phony most of the time. TV Movie dialog and writing. Strictly for the low-IQ set.

Review: If you bought the mini-collector set to get both the wide-screen and full-screen version, don't count on it. The set I received included only the wide-screen. Amazon has agreed to take it back, but either the collection I received was a fluke, or the advertisement is just flat wrong.
