Summary: Trailer made it look like a bore, but it was EXCELLENT
Review: This movie was really good when I didn't expect it to be. It is one of the best disaster movies of the 90s. I think the reason why it was so good is because it had charaters that you cared about. As well, the movie focused on the different threats that arise from the volcano. It's not just the lava that you need to worry about. I guess what I am trying to say is that this is a movie with great action and brains.

Summary: VERY Exciting !
Review: This movie is a classic adventure movie. The tension builds throughout, as Brosnan attempts to raise the warning about the volcano. Of course you know he will be right, but the movie gives a plausible reason for the poeple's resistance. Also, Linda Hamilton does a great job as the mayor who is torn between believing him and keeping the town from economic ruin. It's not as predictable as most adventure flicks either. The last 45 minutes totally kept me on the edge of my seat. Loved this one.

Summary: What goes up, must come down... eventually.
Review: When "Dante's Peak" was released I wasn't sure whether to see it straight away or wait until Volcano also came out. That way I could choose to see whichever film got more of the popular vote. In the end, my natural impatience won out and I went to see Dante's Peak. And as it turned out, Volcano was a joke compared to Roger Donaldson's creation, so I made the right choice.

If any of you have read a Desmond Bagley novel, you'll know what Dante's Peak is like. Slow to build up the pressure. Dropping suspenseful hints left right and centre, and finally exploding into an orgy of action that doesn't seem to stop. So naturally, to pull it all off, a couple of top-flight action stars where needed.

Pierce Brosnan (Goldeney, The Thomas Crown Affair), plays Harry Dalton, a volcanologist sent to investigate some strange measurements coming out of Dante's Peak. Linda Hamilton (Terminator), is Rachel Wando, the town's mayor and mother of two modern children, who are just waiting for a father figure to enter their lives. Bring Linda and Harry together and significant glances start to fly, squeezed in amongst the flying lava of course.

The story is fairly straight-forward. You have an expert that has a "bad feeling" about the mountain, up against a town that would much rather have cocktails with investors than review the emergency plan. Even Harry's own team of geologists, don't want to rock the boat before they see the whole lake rocking. But it's not the story that makes this movie so good, it's the situation.

As in so much of history, we humans will continue to be convinced everything is going to be fine, right up until that first handful of dirt hits the coffin lid. In this case, people don't panic until the town hall shakes, buildings fall down and the top of their mountain takes a short tour through the stratosphere. "It's too late people", I felt like shouting. The bridge is out, the air is clogged with ash and the heated snow is causing a flash flood. There is also the acid lake, falling rocks and quick flowing lava for the townspeople to worry about while trying to outrun the main threat; A Pyroclastic cloud, travelling hundreds of miles an hour, which will scramble anyone's eggs, no matter how fast they can run.

But not to worry, Harry has a four-wheel drive and a good reason to impress Rachel, so you just know everything is going to work out. It's true that there are a few less than believable moments during the film but compared to "Volcano", Dante's Peak is straight out of the encyclopedia Britannica. For those that are curious, all of the volcanic activity featured in the film is realistic. But you would never see it all happen in the one eruption. I guess you could say that Dante's Peak is the mother of all volcanoes.

Summary: Interesting behind-the-scenes.
Review: Certainly not the best movie in the world, but not the worst, either. The chemistry between Brosnon and Hamilton could have been a little better, and the acting wasn't the best, but the special-affects were very good. The behind-the-scenes part on the disk is very interesting... It shows all of the model cars and volcanoes used in the movie. The movie itself has somewhat of a depressing aura about it that leaves you feeling like you just wasted your time... Chances are you did.

Summary: zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.........
Review: The first movie Ive seen where the making of featurette was better than the movie itself. I bought this on widescreen and Im sure after watching it once that I never will again. I dont know how you could call this better or worse than Volcano w/ Tommy Lee Jones. They both stink. It was a whole hour before anything happened then 30 minutes of boring close calls. I will give them credit for the bridge scene. I had no idea those trucks were miniatures. If you want to see a good disaster flix with LOTS of action get Daylight w/Stallone. Not great, but at least that was action throughout the entire movie.

Summary: Why do I like this movie
Review: I have seen Dante's Peak at least ten times and I still can't quite put my finger on why I keep going back to it. I do like Pierce Brosnan, although this certainly isn't his best performance. This movie, I think, is the epitome of why we all watch movies: a couple hours of distraction. This movie has a very appealing look to it. And the premise that we might be living in a very dangerous location helps make this story a riveting one. Academy Award caliber? Never! But for sheer entertainment, this is one of the best.

Summary: Great story being built up, poor end
Review: I remember there was a huge hype in Switzerland when this movie came out on our screens, competing with Volcano... And the movie did start great... A wonderful and idyllic little town close to a dormant volcano, silent for many years (Isn't it that the cuter the town is the more horrible the destruction will be to us?)... As you can imagine, it wont be dormant for long and the special effects showing the break out are really great. Unfortunately, the end of the movie just couldnt hold the niveau being developed at the beginning. In the whole a good action movie, not as good as Twister, though.
