Rating: Summary: Penetrate Deep Into Movie Greatness With 'The Core' Review: What a great movie, sexual tension you can cut with a geode, a giant geode at the center of the earth that is. Great acting, even better sci-fi realism. I never thought movies could be so great untill I saw the core.
Rating: Summary: Fun and Silly Disaster Flick Review: I'm a big fan of "Disaster" movies, so when a geologist friend recommended I check out "The Core," I was pleasantly surprised. The Core is an engaging but fluffy bit of pseudo-science. The Premise? When the Earth's molten core stops 'rotating' due to mankind's tampering, it wreaks havoc with the Earth's environment, resulting in widespread natural disasters and eventual global destruction.
Who can save us? Yes, believe it or not COLLEGE PROFESSORS can save us. Yes, that's right...Not only is there a Santa Claus Virginia, but Earth will be saved by an Academic! If I weren't too busy laughing at the idea, I would've enjoyed the film even more. Ludicrousness aside, you have the usual group of characters. The hot-shot (and oh-so-cute) stronaut, the misunderstood scientist, the cowardly rich boy, the dedicated professor, and the wizened veteran, each one contributes something to the team and some pay the ultimate price. (I'll let you guess who).
This was a fun, but predicable film. If you like "Volcano" and all those movies about Asteroids hitting earth, you'll like this one. Mindless fun.
Rating: Summary: BEST MOVIE EVER Review: except for MAYBE National Treasure, this is my favorite movie. i don't care that a lot of people don't like it, i absolutely love it. everything made perfect sense... it was just awesome... they explained every detail, it was perfect science fiction, it took what was known and made it into a great story, i would give it 100 out of 5 stars if i could
Rating: Summary: Mindless but fun entertainment Review: This film surprised me. I thought it would be a predictable Hollywood 'Armageddon' type movie but it was reasonably well-acted and fairly entertaining. What surprised me was that the government scientist wasn't such a bad guy after all and there was no romantic sub-plot between Hillary Swank's character and the College Prof.
Rating: Summary: Science Fiction, indeed. (emphasis on "Fiction") Review: The best advice for any first-time viewers of this film is "Don't think too much!" I was willing to go along with the story all the way to the middle of the film on entertainment value alone...then my brain fired up and I was dismayed. The story is an apocalypse tale where the spinning core of the Earth has somehow stopped and needs to be jump-started with nuclear detonations. Okay, I'm game! Sounds fun! The special effects are decent. There is the usual array of characters from the geeky internet genius who's only sustenance throughout the film consists of Hot Pockets and grand latte's to the cocky scientist who's wealth has been obtained through stealing others ideas. There is a love interest, of course, with the two most attractive actors slowly but inexorably attracting one another. There is a pat Hollywood ending complete with applause...and I know if my brain hadn't started working out the details of the plotting I would have enjoyed this film much more. As it stands, this film is closer to a 4 star rating than a 3 star rating, with most of the characters being more or less human with their flaws showing on their sleeves. The only blatantly ridiculous moment occurs over 700 miles beneath the surface when some of the crew venture outside to remove an obstruction. All of them should have been compressed into meatballs wrapped in purple jump suits given the pressure at that depth! But there I go again...thinking. As far as disaster flicks go, this is a good time.
