Summary: Which Way To Get Off Of This Sinking Boat?
Review: The Poseidon Adventure was a great disaster movie but a little confusing at first, which way do we go,up,down or sideways? Through water and fire they did go and some would die but I guess that's the way it goes, in a disaster movie. Gene Hackman,Shelly Winters,Red Buttons were great but my favorite was Roddy McDowall, he is the best ever and cute!!!

Summary: A GREAT BUT NOT ONE OF THE BEST OF DISASTER FLICKS
Review: I liked THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE a lot it has a lot of spectactcular special effects that make the movie seem ahead of it's time. However there were parts of the movie I did'nt like such as some of the soap-operaish diaolouge between some of the characters don't get me wrong GENE HACKMAN, RODDY MCDOWALL and SHELLY WINTERS do a great job with so-so diolouge but of the cast just are'nt that interesting too watch they're almost too boring. The best parts of the movie I hate to say were the special effects wait till you see what happens to the ship which I won't give away. Anyway if you like wild rides you'll love this film but in my opnion not as much as some of the action-adventure flicks like we have today.

Summary: Great film, but disappointing DVD
Review: My fave film of all time and a shockingly disappointing DVD. Sure the picture quality is great and the "Menu" hints at a sense of humor from the folks behind the re-packaging....but that just makes the lack of content all the more disappointing for fans of this landmark film. No commentary or special features... They really need to go back and start from scratch with putting the tributes together for this one!!!

Summary: ALL STAR DISASTER CLASSIC!
Review: As far as disaster flicks go, it's hard to find one as effective and engrossing as THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE. Director Ronald Neame, and the astute guidance of Irwin Allen, forged this riveting tale of a world turned upside down. Remember, they didn't have CGI back then, but the set builders and other technical crews gave us a ship turned topsy turvy by a monstrous tidal wave. While all the performers did very well, my favorites were Stella Stevens as the foul-mouthed ex-hooker starting a new life with her cop husband; Ernest Borgnine as Rogo, the aforementioned cop who brought all his trademark bluster, and innocence, to the role; Roddy McDowall, the oh-so-polite steward who always called everybody sir or ma'am; and Jack Albertson, the devoted husband of the doomed Shelley Winters.
THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE will always be one of (if not the) best disaster films----it has all the necessary ingredients and yes, it even had THE MORNING AFTER.
A good film!!!!

Summary: My Favorite Disaster Movie!
Review: I have written a review of The Poseidon Adventure before but that was before I got the DVD and in that review I basically was reviewing the movie so I thought I would write a new review. I received the DVD for Christmas and just watched it a little while ago and though I do think that they should release a new special Edition DVD with anamorphic widescreen and more extra features I'm pleased with this letterbox widescreen for now but will definitely think of getting a special Edition DVD if one is ever released. I enjoyed watching this movie and I think this is the best disaster movie I have ever seen and the whole cast is great. Gene Hackman (The French Connection), Ernest Borgnine (The Dirty Dozen), Shelley Winters (Night of the Hunter), Stella Stevens (Where Angels Go, Trouble Follows), Jack Albertson (Chico and the Man), Pamela Sue Martin (Dynasty), etc. If you are looking for great extra features on this DVD you will find that this is a bare bones DVD and the features are rather sparse and are only the trailer and a couple of short biographies and filmographies of only a couple of the actors from the cast and I hope that if a new DVD is released that it will have more special features that will include a biography and filmography of the whole cast and also cast interviews, deleted scenes and all of the usual extras. Well anyway until a better DVD comes along I'm actually content with this one.

Summary: Good second disaster flick from the 70's
Review: Airport was first by about two years and really started the genre. The cast in this movie is all three dimensional and believable to a large degree. My former science teacher told us this type of giant wave on the sea coming out of nowhere could never happen in real life. If true this film is science fiction.

Review: This movie is so much better than the titanic. Although both share some simalirities, The Posideon Adventure has an exhilerating plot and unpredictable instances. Its has all that one whould hope for, adventure, love, and drama. But none overwhelmes the other, delivering the right dose, at the right time. This DVD belongs in every collection

Summary: Poseidon is the ultimate and original
Review: Irwin Allen, who brought us Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea, Land Of The Giants and Lost In Space, brings the ultimate and best "disaster" movie of the 70's. Paul Gallico's novel converts very well to the big screen. Great actors chewing up the scenes with dramatic flare ( though the screenplay is a bit corny ). Special effects for 1972 are great and I never get tired of seeing this picture ! All actors are great, especially the ladies, Stella, Shelley, Carol and Pamela Sue. If you have never seen it, I highly reccommend this blockbuster. Enjoy !

Summary: A Total Disaster That Doesn't Sink
Review: The decade of the 70's was replete wth so called disaster films. Each one trying to top the last, in terms of peril and excitement, for the all star casts that usually populated these movies. Without question, one of the best of its kind and my personal favorite is 1972's The Poseidon Adventure. Produced by disaster film guru and one of the men behind the 60's sci-fi tv series Lost In Space, Irwin Allen, the film is timeless--despite it's 70's "flavor".

An earthquake at sea causes a massive tidal wave to capsize the luxury liner SS Poseidon on a New Year's Eve voyage. The top-heavy vessel is now upside down and sinking fast. A group of ten survivors, led by a rebelious revrend named Scott (Gene Hackman), must overcome many obstacles to find their way to safety until help can arrive to rescue them.

Based on Paul Gallico's novel, the film's intense (for its time) screenplay by Wendell Mayes and Stirling Silliphant, under the direction of Ronald Neame, showcases enough drama and excitement for two movies. The rest of the cast is dynamic and each one plays quite well opposite Hackman which helps sell the story. I especially enjoyed the exchanges between Scott and fellow passenger Detective Lt. Mike Rogo (Ernest Borgnine) who questions his methods for survival at every turn. Red Buttons as Mr. Martin, Stella Stevens as Mike's wife Linda, Shelly Winters & Jack Abertson as the Rosen's, Roddy McDowell as Acres, a ship's waiter, all are so good in the movie, that I can forgive how annoying Pamela Sue Martin and Eric Shea are as brother and sister. To this day, even after many viewing, I still find myself getting caugt up in the story, even though, I know how it all ends. The movie also further proves why Hackman is one of my favorite actors and a real pro at what he does. Look for Leslie Neilsen in a small role as the doomed ship's Captain and listen to a pitch perfect film score by John Williams--one of his most underated efforts (the Oscar winning song, The Morning After, usually gets most of the attention).

The DVD's only extra is the film's theatrical trailer. There's a wonderful segment of AMC's Backstory program out there that could be included on a special edition disc at some point. Until then, if you've never seen The Poseidon Adventure, be sure to check it out. If you have, now's the time to see it again...

Summary: Perfect 70s Disaster Thriller
Review: Poseidon is truely the best of the early disaster genre. Obviously good enough to spawn the genre! There are thrills, good FX, funny dialogue, heroes and villains and gals in hot pants all tromping through this upside down tub. Hackman is the conflicted man here and he works hard at it. Winters is the sacrificial lamb in a part that could Esther Williams blush. Borgnine and Stevens are my faves however as their quips and quirks come fast and furious. Anyway, it all adds up to one hell of a lot of upside down fun!
