Summary: Very Unappreciated
Review: First off, I own this film and am glad because of it. I know many reviewers would choose to dump on this movie, purely because it's a summer "action" movie, but, I tell you, it is something more. Leave it to Criterion to notice the greatness in a film all would but dismiss. Michael Bay has proven himself as a wonderful visual director, worthy of the title of this generation's Ridley Scott. Though his first two film's {Bad Boys, The Rock} content left you feeling some-what empty, this film if full of true and genuine human emotion. I also appreciate the Director's integrity in not drastically shortening the film.

With a rag-tag team of colorful character's this film continuously keeps you laughing, but also renews a sort of patriotism and heroism lost in our bubble-gum, quick-fix, society. Within this film, there stands a shadowed memorial to the true forgotten hero's of the Twentieth Century, astronauts. The brave men who, more than three-decades ago did no more than accomplish a feat though impossible by man since the first of our kind gazed into the darkened sky and wondered of the glowing sentinental that loomed over our earth. Now, space exploration is nothing but a few whimsical jokes about under-budgeted failures and under-manned projects. Few taxpayers realize that this branch of the Government that they refuse to support could very well be our only hope in the course of a celestial crisis, as this film so well demonstrates.

So, I ask you, when watching this film, don't immediately enter into it with a fixed mind set of a summer blockbuster, but rather a patriotic and wonderful emotional journey into the lives of a few who sacrifice themselves to save their world.

Summary: Great Special Effects; the Rest, Pedestrian
Review: Though not a big fan of the action genre like Die Hard and such, I have always liked Bruce Willis and appreciated his work. Here again, he gives a very good performance of decidedly mediocre material. Now, the special effects are exciting and awesome, so far as they go -- though there's not enough of them. (The "opening shots" sequence of the minimeteors hitting NYC was beautifully done, both exciting and also delightfully humorous at times; the all-too-infrequent bits that follow, such as the destruction of Paris and Hong Kong, are also fine.) But the "story" is not only improbable, but tired as well. And of a rather juvenile mindset. The whole long, loud, annoying oil rig scene, supposed to establish 1) how coooollll Willis' character is 2) Affleck's predictable relationship with Willis' daughter 3) how rrreally cooollll Willis's character is and 4) how cool all the other driller misfits are -- is one that I peremptorily fast-forward through. And some of the scenes are ruined (for me) by the frenetic rock soundtrack which is, especially for people who aren't big fans of that style, PARTICULARLY grating. In short, I wondered if Advil or Tylenol sponsored the film because it is capable of generating whopper headaches. A good film for an afternoon or evening, on a multiple bill with DEEP IMPACT and one or two George Pal films like WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE or THE WAR OF THE WORLDS -- but don't lose your remote!

Summary: The thing about the skipping on the the Toshiba 3109
Review: I just bought a Toshiba 3109 and here I am about to buy Armageddon on DVD...and I read that it skips from chapter 3 to 4. Does anyone know if this problem is remedied on the Criterion collection...can you go to that individual chapter and watch it by itself...or is it just impossible to see that scene with this player?

Summary: Loved it from the begining to the end!
Review: Armageddeon is a must see movie! The cast and crew did a terrific job. Not only does this movie have breathtaking special effects, the sound quality should bring home 5 stars as well. I own the VHS and DVD version, and I must say that I was totally blown away from the picture and sound quality the DVD version offers. This movie has alot of glued to your seat serious moments, but as well, this movie has some falling out of your seat with laughter moments as well. I loved every bit of it.

Summary: Armageddon, well, its cool!
Review: Armageddon is a very good movie. It was very dramatic and action packed. It would have been cool if the asteroid hit earth! I liked Bruce Willis in this role. The other actors were also very good. I say to all viewers, of this caption, that it was also very emotional at the end. A must see for almost everyone!

Summary: Special Effects masterpiece at the expense of plot
Review: This is perhaps the best example of modern special effects technology in existence. But the performances, dialog, and story are so weak that it is painful to watch. I am a big fan of Affleck and Willis, and I am a big fan of action films. This one is just so overdone, so full of hollywood cliches, so contrived that it is excrutiating to watch. After the first 20 minutes, you know exactly what is going to happen to every character.

The best illustration of the problems with this film can be made when comparing it to the action classic, The Terminator. Terminator was made with a low budget and practically no special effects, but had such a compelling story that it didn't matter. The big-budget effects in Armageddon serve are just sugar coating on a stale pastry.

If you want a film on DVD that you can stretch out your stereo on, by all means, go with Armageddon. If you enjoy film for good plots, compelling characters, and an engrossing story, go with Terminator instead. Yes, Armageddon is, in my humble opinion, one of the best efforts in special effects ever on film. So despite my awful review, I do recommend it for fans of special effects. If you want both plot and effects, try Terminator 2.

Summary: what happened to the oil rig scenes
Review: The movie was ok but like John Myung Lee, I have the Toshiba 3109 and the entire oil rig scene was skipped. Is it the video or is it a compatibility problem?

Summary: Criticism speaks more of the soul of the critic...
Review: ARMAGEDDON, critics notwithstanding, is an intense and entertaining film dealing with human character in the face of overwhelming challenge. The very idea that humanity--or at least some of it--could be able to rise above the everyday, pull together, and defy mindless destruction is the concept which must frighten the timid souls who "didn't get it" or didn't like it. As for the physics? Remember that Bradbury wrote many superb tales without an entirely firm grasp of physics. The idea of heroism and of our potential in space is the idea here, folks, and perhaps that's such a stinging rebuke to those feeble and fearful who make cuts to the space program and disparage films such as this.

Summary: Action packed, and it had Bruce!
Review: Granted, Bruce Willis is my favorite actor and I may be a bit biased, I thought this movie was great. Far better than a "Scottland Urinal" as one review may say. I'd suggest this DVD to any Bruce Willis fan or any fan of action movies for that matter, the special effects and cast were great. Overall, a great movie, five stars no doubt about it.

Summary: we're having some technical difficulties
Review: I purchased the DVD hoping that I would get an image of superior quality and room shaking sound. Instead, I got a piece of software that is not compatable with my Toshiba dual disc DVD player. It skips from chapter 3 to chapter 4. Irritating...Buyer, please keep the receipt just in case.
