Rating: Summary: Asinine is the point Review: When I was first recommened this movie, by the very description it did not seem to have much promise. Moreover, I couldn't believe the way my friend raved about it.
But then I sat and watched it. I could not find a single serious moment in the film, and I loved it for that reason. The absurdity of the characters and settings, and the nonchalant way Willis' charachter moves through the story in and of itself has entertainment value. Described by Willis as, "in the classic comedy vein of It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World. It's Cary Grant meets James Bond meets Our Man Flint meets the Flintstones meets Dorothy Lamour meets Miles Davis."
The pairing of Willis and Aeillo is a highlight. Andie MacDowell, whether running covert ops for the vatican or talking to dolphins is good for a chuckle. And the rest of the suprisingly star packed cast each play their rather unique rolls very well, with one exception. Sandra Bernhard was a negative. I don't know how it is possible, but somehow she managed to overact a role that was supposed to be overacted. Fortunately that casting mistake only occupies a fraction of the total viewing time.
While theatrically more on par with "Weekend at Bernies" than a fine film, it is good fun. Turn your brain off, sit back, and have some laughs.
Rating: Summary: Chill out - its all just a bit of fun Review: The first time I saw this movie I must have been about fifteen on my sisters suggestion and perhaps that is why I loved it so much. But here I am ten years later and I have owned it on VHS for ten years and have decided to upgrade to DVD. Why? Because it is absolutely fabulous. It is witty and off beat and was made way before its time. So you may ask why did the critics slag it? Well because they are critics! How many times have you gone to see a movie that the critics simply loooved and you were like "well there goes two hours of my life that I will never get back and I was bored stiff.". This is not that movie, the best one-liners ever are peppered throughout the movie "The man knows, the man knows" and so does this women. This is definitely the funniest movie that Bruce Willis ever did. But I must warn you if you don't have a great sense of humour, don't bother, it will fly right over your head and you will be saying "well there goes two hours of my life..." Either you get it or you don't!
Rating: Summary: It's cheesy, but as long as you're not lactose intolerant Review: This movie really is pretty funny, if you're willing not to take everything so seriously. I love having movies on hand that when I have people over, and it's mixed company, I don't have to worry about the content. Most people expect Bruce Willis to be "Die Hard" or "The Jackal." This movie is a comedy with a bit of action, not the other way around.
Rating: Summary: So I'm an idiot for liking this movie? Review: Hudson Hawk is in my Top 5 Underground Humor Classics, along with such gems as Half-Baked (pure comedy genius), Drop-Dead Gorgeous (a vicious, yet funny, satire of Smallvile USA), Best In Show (chuckle, chuckle, snort) and Big Trouble in Little China (pure goofiness - hard to beat funny Kurt Russel). These are all movies that share the combination of relative obscurity coupled with sheer hilarity.
To all those would-be critics who cast dispersion on those who like this movie (i.e., "only an idiot would like this movie"), grow up. Just because YOU (who are clearly overimpressed with your intelligence) don't like this movie, doesn't mean others are stupid for liking it. What I, and the majority of respondants here, have, is a particular sense of humor finely tuned to sarcastic, toungue-in-cheek satire. Many will agree satire is the most difficult form of humor, because if it is not recognized for what it is, it will appear as crass or nonsensical (and prompt those who don't get it to label all that do "idiots" or worse...)
So, if you don't have an appreciation for subtle satire, stay away from this movie. You will not understand or appreciate its humor. But if you do have your satire antennae well-developed, you may love it as much as I do. And the "buddy film" chemistry between the actors is great - you get the impression they had a lot of fun with this one...
<Oh, would you like to swing on a star...>
Rating: Summary: What you talkin' about, Willis? Review: You've probably heard rumours that this isn't exactly Bruce Willis's best movie.
Believe the rumours.
Rating: Summary: Hudson Hawk is clever movie that is witty and funny Review: Some of the other reviewers that have commented about this movie have a premadonna type attitude and think they know it all. Some people should keep their two cents to themselves!
Well, let me tell you that while this movie didnt have great reviews I found it to be a classic. The wit and intellegence to think up some of the senarios was truly genious. I agree with one reviewer that an Oscar was not the goal, but it made me laugh, and I have watched this movie over ten times. The characters are very unique and interesting as how they fit together. The actors are all pretty accomplished in their own right and make a good chemistry. The plot twists many times and McDowells and Willis are a good duo.
Rating: Summary: Oh, c'mon, people.... Review: Why do so many people seem to expect every movie that comes out to be some sort of artistic triumph? Can't they just enjoy a movie for what it was intended to be, i.e.: just plain fun?
I seriously doubt the producers of this film ever had any intentions of it being an Oscar-winner in ANY catagory. They simply wanted to make a movie that people could sit back and relax, let go, and just laugh at. Okay, so the "artsy-fartsy" crowd doesn't like it. That's fine, 'cause I don't like them, either. Pretentious, self-serving, hideously obscure, and mind-numbingly boring this movie is NOT, but that seems to be what the critics consider a "good motion picture." Sorry, folks, but I enjoy being entertained, not "educated" all the time.
Sometimes you just want to read a comic book, not a great classic novel. Sometimes you want to watch Bugs Bunny cartoons, not "60 Minutes." Sometimes you want to watch a movie for fun, not to be "elevated."
THAT is what "Hudson Hawk" is all about!
Rating: Summary: Why does he sing? Review: I thought I was going to enjoy this film, when I saw that Bruce Willis was looking mighty fine on the cover, but when I started watching it, the only thing I was really watching it for Bruce Willis. The storyline was quite interesting, but the rest of the characters just weren't.
Andie MacDowell, for some reason, I just don't like. Hudson Hawk was released in 1991, and 13 years on, she looks the exact same. In the continuous rubbish commercials that she puts out, when it's perfectly obvious she's using something a lot stronger than skin firming cream. Give me a break.
I quite liked the appearance by Richard E Grant in this, and I would have much preferred him by himself, until that thing came along, and over-acted and over exaggerated her way into the bad acting world. So much so that I can't bear to mention her name. If Richard had been by himself, it would have been so much better.
I normally like Bruce Willis films, but in this, he seemed to be constantly winking at the camera - and you say the cast of Friends were bad at this?! And he's ruined forever for me by singing. It wouldn't have been so bad, if he hadn't sung it so overly camp, and done all these stupid moves (no one say a word about Steps) Sure sometimes, he may come across as funny, but if you're used to seeing him in so much better films, then you'll probably be on my side.
Most of the time, the film can't decide what it wants to be - a parody full of puns, or a true to heart action movie. Igg & Ook are just like the twins in the Matrix movies, only better. There are some extremely stupid and unbelieveable scenes, one being 'Hawk' falling out of the sky, bouncing off a street light and landing in a chair in the cafe at the exact time he's supposed to meet a woman?! That wouldn't happen.
I suppose this should have been a film that makes you laugh, and notice all the little in jokes (like Sylvester Stallone's brother, which totally went over my head), or try and figure out what Igg & Ook's last words were, when they don't actually speak. And of course you've got that thing in it. Take out that, make Bruce Willis not sing, and the film might have been slightly better. Or you could just skip the rest of the movie, and watch the scenes where he wears his hat, or manages to steal all those art pieces, with not very much effort.
Rating: Summary: Great movie Review: Well, don't ever believe the critics. I find when they write bad reviews that's when you got to go see the movie. I'm a big Bruce Willis fan but don't rave about all his movies. This movie was VERY entertaining and a good sing-a-long. I now have the soundtrack so I can sing to it in my car. It's worth the money to buy this one.
