Rating: Summary: An excellent animal movie! Review: A heartfelt film about a boy and his passion for coon hunting. If how well the relationship between people and their pets should decide the value of a movie then this film is solid gold!Set in the 1930's it's realistic atmosphere, period and setting is so stunning, that it holds you to your seat from the start. Excellent acting, especially by James Whitmore and Stewart Peterson. Peterson, particularly, is extremely convincing as Billy. You would have to search long and hard to find as appealing a performance from one so young! In reviewing a film of this nature, you really have to judge the emotional level and how easily you are moved. Some animal movies (OLD YELLER, BORN FREE and others) move you to tears very easily. This is one of those films. Others seem to be strained to say the least. For more on that, see my review of the sequel to ....RED FERN GROWS. In any case, if you are looking for a film that can realistically take you to another time and place, tells a great story and does so in a very moving way, this film is for you.
Rating: Summary: A heartworming tale. Review: A heartworming tale of a country boy and two dogs. It tells the story of how they save Billy's life and die trying to do it again. All in all a very good story. END
Rating: Summary: A Story of Love and Sacrifice! Review: Adapted from Wilson Rawls' wonderful novel, Where the Red Fern Grows is a fantastic family film. The story is about the love between a boy and his two hunting hounds. And it is about the deepest kind of sacrifice. The cinematography is not that great, but the story is wonderful! I would recommend to those interested in the video - read the book first! You will enjoy the video even more! As with pretty much all film adaptations of books, there are many details which were left out or changed by the movie. But they certainly caught the over all theme.
Rating: Summary: Great! Review: As a child, my favorite book was "As the Red Fern Grows" and this movie adaptation is very faithful to the book! It is as touching and heartfelt as Wilson Rawls intended for it to be. The simple joys experienced by this "Americana" family will touch your hearts!
Rating: Summary: get out the kleenex! Review: as an animal lover, especially dogs, i am no longer allowed to view this movie in the company of others without a box of tissues by my side. the emotions this movie evokes is mystical and unexplainable except for the fact it bears witness to compassion and lots of love. warning! have some kleenex and be prepared for a great movie!
Rating: Summary: Boring and pointless. Only watch if you want to sleep. Review: Endless boredom. Goes nowhere fast. In fact, goes nowhere. What else can I say?
Rating: Summary: Nothing compared to the book! Review: I am a 7th grade student. It was required for me to read the book "Where the Red Fern Grows" and then after completing the book my langauge teacher had us watch the movie. I was excited to see the movie after reading the suspensful book. When it ended I was truely disapointed. The movie cut out some very good and essential parts to get the whole feel of the story. Scenes that where not included in the movie were the showing of Billy as an adult in the begining, Little Ann winning the beauty contest, Little Ann almost dies while trying to get a coon, and in the book Billy has THREE sisters, not two! I found the movie horrible!! Maybe if I hadn't read the book I would have enjoyed the movie a tad bit more. The book has 10 times more emotion and suspense than the movie!! In fact, the book had me in tears- I REALLY CRIED FROM A BOOK!! That was something the movie didn't even get close to doing. Normally, I'm too lazy to read a book so I take the easy way out and I would watch the movie of the book- but in this caase I really don't ever want to see the movie again. If you're considering buying this movie- DON'T!! Buy the book, it's more than worth it!
Rating: Summary: Where The Red Fern Grows Review: I am not writing a review. I simply want to know why it is taking so long for me to get my order? On line it said it would be shipped in 2 to 3 days when i ordered. I also put in for Where The Red Fern Grows I. That was on my wish list yet I don't see it on my account, and it shows you have 3. I would like to have that on my order as well. Thanks for your attention. I would like to hear from you on this matter. Becky Reinert
Rating: Summary: The best movie I have seen almost as good as the book. Review: I can't wait to share this movie with my children. I loved it as a child and I look forward to seeing it again. It has wonderful values and a great sense of accomplishment. A true classic that will never die.
Rating: Summary: One of the best movies about friendship Review: I first saw this movie when I was in third grade and it is still one of the most heartwarming movies I have ever seen. About a boy who, during the great depression, skrimped and saved to buy a pair of coon hounds. After he finally got them he raised them to become the best pair of coon hunters in the county. What the dogs do for him proves an unconditional friendship to the end. I never fail to cry at the end. If I could give it more than 5 stars, I would.
