Rating: Summary: It Takes 20 Years....... Review: 1.......to be able to even swing a sword in a way that Tom Cruise displayed in the film (whereas he learned in a matter of months). Realistically speaking AT BEST he could be a battle strategist but not on the front lines with the 20+ year Samurai veterans. 2. I was not moved but the so-called "romance", how many times must we see the poor, weeping, vulnerable black/asian/native american/martian female fall for the heroic, strong, honorable white male?3. I have lived in a "westernized" Japan for 3 1/2 years, although this movie is fiction it's nice to get some insight to how things were (there's always some truth even in a lie) prior to the execution of 1,000,000+ innocent Japanese (Hiroshima, Nagasaki). Contrary to most "hardcore" American belief, America's priority has ALWAYS been Globalization, be it by assimilation (westernizing a culture) or occupation (beating you into submission). 4. More kudos to the Japanese actors who played their roles flawlessly, but when it's your culture is it really "acting"? 5. For "entertainment" value I gave this movie a 5, had I graded it for the subliminal message that is underneath it all I would have given it 1.
Rating: Summary: SILLY NAME, SO-SO DOCUMENTARY Review: Not bad, but not great. It largely ignores the more brutal aspects of the samurai warrior caste of Japan; their arbitrary slaughter of any non-samurai who acted too uppity or the fact that the common people despised them, seeing them as being like "ticks and fleas on a dog." Just for the record, the samurai were a social, rather than a racial, equivalent to the white apartheid culture of South Africa. They were the top of the food chain, NOT benevolent and enlightented protectors of the common people. Most of them had outstanding skills in martial arts, ferocity, dicipline, and, at least among the wealthier, an education in aesthetics. But they had loyalty to their liege lords when it suited them, and betrayed them when it didn't, even if their liege lord was a family member. As for the knuckle-head who dubbed themself gorgeousp and thinks the death toll of Hiroshima was 1 million, it was actually under 100,00, which is a fraction of the 300,000 Chinese the Japanese Imperial Army masscered in Nanking and even a smaller fraction of the 15 million Chinese wiped out by the Japanese during WWII, the war the Japanese started. Furthermore gorgeousp, (dumb**** would be a more accurate nickname for you) the Japanese did this all in the name of the euphemistically dubbed "Japanese Co-prosperity Sphere," which prior to 1945, was the euphemism for Japanese military expansionsim. America does "globalization" with dollars, Japan did it with tanks, rifles, and bayonets. So pull your head out of your *** gorgeousp.
