Summary: This film is barely worth it.
Review: When this film was being produced it was done with the flair and enthusiasm of that of a big Hollywood movie, which it is. But what is so disturbing is that this tragic story is based on a real event, and one fairly recent.

Like "Titanic" the audience knows of this film's ending. But "Titanic" had 80 years for the world to heal a bit. The tragedy of "Perfect Storm" occured in 1991. I feel sorry for the families of the fishermen in the film, they have to relive this in their minds everyday and now it's on screen for everyone to laugh and cheer at.

The subject matter of "Perfect Storm" is hardly appropriate for a big budget actioner. This film owes more to "Twister" than "Titanic" in that it is presented as a roller coaster ride type of film.

Dealing with the film itself, it's full of story and acting problems. One major problem is the two separate storylines that have no relation to eachother. Two ships lost in the storm, one makes it one doesn't. But the biggest problem with this film has got to be Diane Lane's terrible accent. Man, the producers of the film must really be pushing for an Oscar nomination for her because you couldn't get her off the screen! Why are we so concerned about her when it's Clooney and his crew who are in jeopardy? Because the producers are going for that "Apollo 13" wife at home Oscar nod.

The acting in the film is fair, Clooney and Marky Mark to a pretty good job in getting the audience to fear for them. The effects are first rate, sound, music... all of the technical stuff is good. But the overall effort is disgraceful. I hope that Warner Bros. seriously issues out some major royalties to the families of those dead fisherman for making a shameless entertainment based on their tragedy. And it wasn't even entertaining either.

Summary: Is the perfect storm perfect?
Review: The perfect storm has its high entertaining points and tons of mind bending waves, except the story is basically plain: They go out and get caught in a storm. Of couse the movie is entertainig if you would like to watch a storm for two hours. But with all the DVD features included this one may be a holiday top pick!

Summary: The Perfect Storm
Review: Many of this summers films were over hyped, too long and just plain bad. For instance, Mission:Impossible 2. The Perfect Storm however was the exact opposite. Sure, it had it's slow points. The first half hour or so when the cast is on land is somewhat on the dulll side. But, if you understand that it's a matter of setting up the events that take place later on in the film it's easier to watch. A good portion of the film deals with the relationship between Bobby Shatford (Portrayed quite capably by Mark Wahlberg) and Chris Cotter. (Diane Lane, with a terrible Boston accent) He wants to go out to sea one more time to score some cash for his divorce lawyer, her kids and a new life together. She of course uses the old film cliche "I have a bad feeling about this." Used in 9 out of 10 action films since the first Star Wars film. That aside, you generally feel like they really care about each other and that he reallys does believe it'll all be OK. The rest of the film revolves around CPT. Billy Tyne (George Clooney) and his motley crew of fisherman. Clooney portrays Tyne with a sort of held back sorrow throughout the film. It seems that he knows the outcome before they even set out. He is also given little to do besides bark out orders and generally look angry with the world. Alot can be said though for the emotion he gets out of his eyes alone. One seen in particular just makes you somehow understand what he's feeling just from the look on his face. Not too many actors can capture your attention like that without actually Speaking. The rest of the cast, most notably John C Reilly contribute good performances to the film. The moment towards the end of the film where he talks about his son is the most heartfelt and also the most real moment in the film. As far as the special effects go. Wow is the best word I can use to describe them. Most of the waves are seen from the inside of the cabin but when Wolfang Petersen takes the camera outside you definatly feel as though you're trapped in something uncontrolable. He also manages to keep the film taut though you are already certain of the outcome. Alot can be said about the films shortcomings. On an emotional level, you will not find anything else like this film. Exciting, yet utterly disturbing at the same time. Heroic and Tragic. Don't miss it.

Summary: Nice script +Nice cast * great director = Dam fine film
Review: The Perfect storm is a fine movie. It is based upon actual events, but on a very fictional story which is very compelling. The story is realistic, and direction by Petersen is outstanding (the director of Air force One). The Perfect storm was one of the summer's best films in my opinion, and had a very strong cast (including Clooney and Wahlberg). The effects in the film are incredible, even by today's standards, the best bit for me was, when the shark was pulled onto the fishing boat. This film included for the first time a part for Clooney when he wasn't Mr. Wright, and he played the part incredibly well. People who don't want a spoiler please stop now!

The fact that some people don't like this film because it may not have the happiest of ending just makes me laugh, this is based upon a true story, do these people actually think a boat could survive a storm like this. This may be a fault caused by Hollywood, and in some way by Petersen himself. I liked Air force one, but it was a topic Hollywood movie, the goodies win. The perfect storm has no real villain, just heroes, so no one really wins.

This is a fine movie and a great x-mas gift. Buy it on DVD now.

Review: The setting takes place in massachusettes were the life and stride of the economy is fish.A group of high put sailors (george cloney, mark whalberg, ect.) buissness has gone down. Its either fish or look for another job. While fishing they enconter a storm they must rise above or die. The first thing is to not expect so much from this movie and then you will realize what the film truly is.

Summary: Peterson should appologize to Junger and Gloucester!
Review: I went into this movie with a pessimistic attitude to begin with. I was hoping to be pleasantly surprised. I wasn't. Junger didnt write about men laughing and hamming it up crashing headlong into certain death. He wrote of fear and heroism and the partnership of all those involved. And what was with the wishy-washy ending? Marky Mark Wahlberg bobbing up spewing out lines of his endless love? George Clooney portraying Billy Tyne as the typical captain who goes down with the ship? Oh yeah, when that happens, why is the water so calm where he is? I could understand if the people Gloucester, Mass. think this is a mockery of the memory of the boys who went down with the Andrea Gail. The saving points of this film are few: Mastrantonio as Linda Greenlaw, the sound (which is amazing), and even the computer generated storm (which is obvious) is not all that bad. The book was much more visual than the movie, and much more moving. I will buy the DVD only for the surround effects. On behalf of Peterson and crew, I appologize to all those of Gloucester, Mass. for this joke of a film.

Summary: Tidal Wash
Review: I read the book and thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought the movie was GRINDINGLY boring. I think it was made in bathtub with trick shots. The characters were just to too contrivedly politically correct. Spare us! Oh the groping...Oh the four letter words. I wish Karen Allen had found a better movie to semi-star in. She was great in Raiders. This movie is a COMPLEAT waste of time. Enough said. Thanks for letting me vent. I had to pay for this is a hotel room. They gave me my money back. Blynn

Summary: Entertaining film
Review: This film may lose some luster on TV when compared to what was shown at the theater. But you will love the effects on this film; you may even get a little seasick. You may know what I mean about seeing some movies on big TV and how it will lose some of its effect on the TV screen. Just think of "Titanic" or "Saving Private Ryan". One knock on the film coming from critics that I don't think it deserves is that they are saying there really isn't any deep character developments. Well how much deep character development is there with fishermen? These are men who work their tails off in terrible working conditions and do it only because...well we got to pay the bills. I thought they were excellent characters because they were just plain ole folks trying to make a living. The sea is their life, and it has ruined some of their lives with divorces and separation from their kids. They go to work and it's good bye for a month! Not "I'll see ya at dinner time when I get home today from work.", but "I'll see ya around August when I get back", if they get back. Besides the real meat of the film is the storm and man is it really something to behold. The film is slightly choppy in story just like the sea in that they switch from one thing to the next. We are on the Andrea Gail fighting the rough seas, and it will cut away to the Coast Guard rescuing a sailboat, and then back at the Port of Massachusetts with family, friends, and girlfriends worrying about their loved ones. Other than that the movie still works as a whole really well. Really neat effects with the storm waves scene once the movie picks up. I read the book a few weeks ago and the film follows closely without the detail of course. I love that book and if you don't see the movie I highly recommend reading it. I'll close for now and take care film fans.

Summary: Hollywood Fluff!
Review: I know that it is rare to have a good adaptation of a good book, but it has been know to happen. Look at Last of the Mohicans, Shawshank Redemption, and others to name a few. But, this was the worst adaptation I have ever seen. The book was not only exciting, but also very detailed and it made you feel the storm. I'm not one of those people who never like a movie because I read the book; I actually saw the movie first this time. I thought this movie would be great, it had talented actors and a big time action director, but what it lacked was character development. If viewers don't care enough about the characters, then who cares if they live or die. The movie made a lot of money due to it's state of the art special effects, but to me, they were neither state of the art or special. The storm looked computer generated and nothing exciting. It was a waste of my money and time to watch this movie. The trite ending also didn't help; the voice over at the end could of make people puke!
