Summary: One of the best Romantic Dramadies of all time.
Review: This film was truly one of the best films of 1998. Not to mention being one of the best Romantic COmedies/DRamas of all time. People often forget that before Soderbergh did Erin brokovich and oceans 11, he directed this much superior film starring the underrated Jennifer Lopez and George Clooney. The film's plot is pretty basic, cop falls for the burglar and the story climaxes when she has to decide whether to turn him in. But what lifts this film is the dialogue delivered with perfect timing by the cast. Lopez and Clooney have wonderful chemistry, even better than roberts and clooney in that other flick. Smart and funny, Go buy this dvd because you'll wanna watch it over and over again.

Summary: Best In Years
Review: This has got to be my favourite action movie, along with Face/Off. George Clooney(The Peacemaker and The Perfect Storm) and Jennifer Lopez (Angel Eyes and The Wedding Planner) both deliver great performances. Along with Ving Rhaemes(ConAir, Pulp Fiction and Entrapment) and Don Cheadle(Swordfish) being the bad guy. It's an altogether great movie and definetely give it two thumbs up! Now Karen(Lopez) has got to decide between love and fate. The end might be a bit surprising. I thought it would be different but I'm happier with the way it did end! I recomend this movie!

Summary: Not the best Soderbergh flick
Review: As a big Soderbergh fan, I was really dissapointed with this film. While Soderbergh's directing is always on target and the characters are well fleshed out, this movie has no real plot. Unlike some people who didn't like this movie, I think the acting was quite good. All the actors (Clooney, Jennifer Lopez, and Ving Rhames) do a great job, and it is this that makes the movie watchable. And I think that Clooney and Lopez have great sexual chemistry. But about half-way through the movie I started to wonder exactly what the hell the plot was and have yet to figure it out. I suppose for those looking for a hip Elmore Leonard movie they won't want to miss this one, but Soderbergh has made better movies than this (e.g., Traffic and Sex, Lies, and Videotape).

Review: 1998 year was the best in years for the movies. Opening in December 1997, Titanic sailed into 1998 and wound up grossing a staggering 1.9 billion dollars worldwide. Hit movies abounded in all budget ranges. Comedies and animated features dominated, but high tech FX movies like Armageddon did well, as did innovative projects like The Truman Show and serious fare such as Saving Private Ryan. By year's end, even less mainstream fare like Shakespeare in Love and Elizabeth, both set in 17th Century England, were doing great.A number of excellent movies underperformed in this crowded field. One of these was Out of Sight, easily the best crime caper flick of the year. There was nothing remotely close to it, and I wish it a long run at video stores. It's based on a novel by one of my favorite writers, Elmore Leonard. Most of him crime novels revolve around the same simple ideas. One is that The Seven Deadly Sins - Greed, Lust, Gluttony, etc. - are very much alive. Another is that criminals are just people, too. Within this group, you still find the same range of personalities and intelligence found in the law abiding populace. Finally, Leonard never neglects the feminine allure of his female characters, but always makes them the equal of the men. Jackie Brown and Get Shorty were, until now, the best movies based on his books. Now the honor goes to Out of Sight. George Clooney, of the major TV series ER, has starred in a couple of high profile movies, but this is his first great work. As professional bank robber Jack Foley, he pulls off a role that would be the downfall of a lesser actor. Jack is an extremely complex character. Only Leonard could create a protagonist who has pulled off two hundred robberies, but who is so averse to violence, he's never carried a gun. Here's a man who can pull off a love affair with a cop, while masterminding a jewelry heist and running from the law. The object of his affection is a Federal Marshall named Karen Sisco, played by the remarkable Jennifer Lopez. In my review of My Best Friend's Wedding, I remarked that Cameron Diaz was destined for major stardom. This has since happened, and I now say the same thing about Miss Lopez. This isn't a psychic prediction. It's plan common sense. Just watch her ignite the screen in this picture. The love affair begins in the trunk of a stolen car. This I believe to be a first in the romance department. From this meeting, we are taken back and forth in a wild pursuit of some very valuable uncut diamonds. As I hope you will see, these jewels give new meaning to the term hide in plain sight. There are heroes, villains, and everyone in between. There are laughs and thrills and even a few tears. The dialog is crisp, classy and concise. The photography is perfect. There are no bad performances. Sex and violence are natural elements to this kind of story, but it's been ages since I seen a movie where they are not used gratuitously. Young directors should take note of Steven Soderbergh's clever techniques in these areas. Simply put, I did not want this movie to end. For me, that's the ultimate compliment.

Summary: Soderbergh Winner and Clooney's best film
Review: Jack Foley (George Clooney) busts out of jail in order to complete one last heist. Karen Sisco (Jenifer Lopez) is the U.S.Marshal who is assigned to bring him in. Sparks fly when the two finally meet, Foley is a smooth operator, it doesn't take long before those sparks lead to fire. Now, Karen and Jack risk it all...for each other. Directed by Steven Soderbergh, the flick benefits from a smart and witty screenplay, (based on the novel by Elmore Leonard), steamy chemistry between Clooney and Lopez. and a great supporting cast. I am not a big fan of Clooney as an actor. Often, it seems as though he just reads his lines, his inflextion sounds the same and hardly changes. Having Lopez around must have helped him He does better when he's surrounded by good people (as is the case here). Lopez is radiant (in her best role) as Karen. Ving Rhames, Don Chedle, Dennis Farina, and Steve Zahn, all turn in great perfomances, to keep this comedy caper moving along. Soderbergh has grown on me in the last few years, it took a bit of time, this was the film that made that happen. It is a pretty good DVD too. There is a cool commentary track with Soderbergh and writer Scott Frank. The deleted scenes are interesting. I liked evaluating what didn't make the cut. The only downer was the poorly produced documentary. I didn't learn anythng except that there were a lot of practical jokes being played on set. It did look like a lot of fun though. Anyone who likes movies that don't dumb down the audience will like OUT OF SIGHT as a film and a DVD.

Summary: Vintage Soderbergh
Review: It's very hard to overstate just how good this movie actually is. Clooney is great, Lopez is gorgeous, Zahn is funny, Cheadle is evil... everyone is in top form here, but it takes Soderbergh's little touches to make the movie something really special. It's worth watching over and over again, just to see the brief cuts and hear the bass guitar. The script is so smooth that you just sort of coast along on a tide of beautifully delivered one-liners ("The sign says 'shut the ... up,' or can't you fellas read?") and perfectly played-out dilemmas. Everything here fits together so well that the film is a treat to watch, and is far better than either Traffic or Erin Brockovich. The DVD edition is excellent as well; the deleted scenes reel is priceless. Check it out; you won't be disappointed.

Summary: (4 1/2 stars) Soderbergh's best
Review: This is the movie that got me hooked on Soderbergh. From the freeze frame of George Clooney slamming his tie into the ground in the first scene I was hooked on this movie and this director. It's stylish but not overly-arty; in a twist of typical hollywood conventions the style helps convey characters thoughts and emotions rather than just showing off. The plot revolves around the romance of a male bank robber and a female federal marshal. Clooney and Lopez show staggering chemistry that makes other on-screen couples seem tepid and worthless. The intricies of the plot are too many and varied to go into, but it's a fractured narrative that has quite a few threads that get all wrapped up. It's extremely entertaining the entire way through. There isn't an extraneous scene, everything needs to be in there. It's a beautiful film that I still watch regularly and it only gets better. The last thing is that I miss Jennifer Lopez in movies, she is so cool. Everytime someone says she is a horrible actress to me, I ask "Have you seen Out of Sight" the answer is always no. She has been overshadowed by her music career and thats a shame. This is still Soderbergh's best, it isn't as insanely pretentious and preachy as Traffic and not as overwrought as Erin Brockovich, and I won't even go into Ocean's Eleven which is good but frivolous. All in all, just buy it and buy it now.

Summary: terrible movie
Review: This movie suffers from bad acting, lack of character development, and an insipid plot. C'mon - Jennifer Lopez a federal matshall? Then George Clooney is always George Clooney - nice looking but he's the Frank Sinatra of modern cinema - he never gets beyond who he is. Then there is the plot - which didn't even rate as high as typical sitcom crime story. Sure, the characters almost kill each other and then they fall in love. Right. Happens all the time. I can't believe that Soderbergh made this after King of the Hill, which was a very beautiful movie. Making this must have been to pay some bills or some debts or something that would make him do something totally stupid. At best it is a good example of how Hollywood takes insightful, original, talented filmmakers and gets them to make the typical trash movie, completely comprising their integrity.

Summary: Why would it fail?
Review: I saw this film when it first came out and found it fresh, funny, and entertaining. I was astounded when it didn't do well at the box office. I thought that a film this well directed and acted, and with stars like Clooney and Lopez, was a shoo-in. If you get a chance to view it, give it a chance. Lopez is a finer actress than she is a singer- she has much more range and talent, so don't judge the actress by her singing career. Clooney is pitch perfect and together they make a sexy, interesting couple.

Review: Don't let the fact that is stars J Lo and George Clooney fool you; this movie is a masterpiece. It has perfect timing, delicate and honest dialouge and what I think is most important fully developeod characters. Even the "bad guys" are likeable.
This is a movie for people who love movies.
