Summary: Yes it's bad...so bad it's good.
Review: "The Van" is a really cheesy 1970's "R-Rated" movie. What do I mean by that? I mean that its most obvious attraction was that since it was rated "R", chances are you were going to see something naughty. If you watched it, you did. It's very cheaply made, the dialogue is incredibly inane and it has no socially redeeming value. Still, maybe it's something to do with nostalgia, but I find it enjoyable to watch and laugh at. So...I'll give it a "1" for overall quality, but a "5" for the fact that I enjoyed the trip down memory lane. That's a "3" overall!

Summary: a mind trip
Review: Good movie, but don't take it seriously. Basically, it's about this kid who buys a hooked up chevy van and smokes pot in it with every girl he picks up. I bought the DVD of this movie thinking it was the next Up In Smoke. Surely it was nowhere near as good, but still a bug-out. I suggest watching it intoxicated in a room full of people!

Summary: What the heck is a vanner?
Review: I don't know what movie you other people have been watching, but for some sad reason, I have seen this movie multiple times, and it is <b>not</b> good! Unfortunately, now that I have seen all of these rave reviews, I must purchase it for my collection. It was a great bad movie when I was 14 and really discovering my own sexual nature, but it is not something that I would watch for its stellar acting or plot qualities.

Thank you for allowing me to share my thoughts on this film, if you can call it that.

Summary: It's Van-tastic!
Review: Ok, I finally got around to purchasing this <i>fine film</i>. And I watched it--eagerly awaiting the fun and amusement that I had remembered as a teen-aged girl. Well, aside from a few funny moments, the movie made me laugh by just how HORRIBLE it really was. I let my friend borrow it. His comment: "<i>Plan 9 from Outerspace</i> was a better movie than this." If you are not already aware, <i>Plan 9<i> has often been touted as the "worst movie ever [said in Simpsons Comic-book Store Guy voice]," and rightly so! But, then you find a simple movie like this little gem, and you really have to rethink the actual level that movie awfulness can sink to. This movie truly lowers the bar. Unfortunately, the DVD that I bought, and paid entirely too much for, is the worst DVD ever, also. It really looks as if someone recorded it off of USA's "Up All Night," (which is what I used to watch this flick on), and transferred it onto DVD format. The cuss words are badly edited out! Talk about craziness! I also remember more sexiness than it had. Anytime there was any moment that might be remotely sexual, the movie cut to oceans and sunsets! There were a LOT of oceans and sunsets! In fact, about half of the movie were OCEANS and SUNSETS!

Anyway, this does not mean that I do not think you should see this movie. I believe that everyone <i>should</i> see this movie at some point or another in one's lifetime. Therefore, if you see a bad movie in the theatre, and you are ticked off by the amount of money you just spent on a ticket (exorbitant, I am sure), then you can watch this movie and it will make the one you were disappointed in seem like Oscar-calibre! You will also think back to those poor souls who actually paid theatre prices to see it in the first place! AGGGGGGHHHHHH!

Summary: It's Van-tastic!
Review: Simple-minded but good-natured drive-in movie about a simple-minded but good-natured high school graduate who has dreams of owning the coolest custom van in the world to use as his "ballroom".

Bobby, our somewhat dorky hero, spends his entire savings to acquire the vehicle of his dreams. Joint sharing and attempts at romancing quickly commence with women Bobby has picked up at the local pizza parlor, but he soon finds out much responsibility, danger and heartache come with being the owner of such a mechanical marvel.

From what I've read on the internet, there seems to be a censored version of this movie for sale. The DVD I own has all of the sex, nudity and profanity intact. I'm not sure why anyone would sell a censored version of The Van, considering the movie's 1970's drive-in pedigree. This negates the intended point of the movie.

I admit The Van is a guilty pleasure of mine. By no means is it a great film but it does capture the southern California laid back mid 70's mood and has enough unintentional humor to put it into the "so bad it's good" category. That is, if you're watching the uncut version.
