Summary: Age Before Beauty
Review: A successful, but lonely middle-aged businessman meets a poor, young, teenage waif--will these two very different people find love? Replace Bogart with Chan and Hepburn with Shu Qi and you might have "Gorgeous", a kind of martial arts remake of "Sabrina".

From the opening scenes of dolphins playing beneath a starry, moonlit night to the inevitable storybook ending, this movie tries be dreamy and romantic, but somehow ends up being tired and lacking instead.

Of course, the real reason to watch Jackie Chan is the fight scenes. And while the action is few and far between, there are a couple of nice ones.

The two biggest and best scenes pit Our Hero against a smaller, seemingly puny opponent who turns out to be Mighty Mouse in disguise. The actor, Brad Allen, looks like a featherweight, but moves like a cheetah, providing some exciting physical dynamics against Chan.

In the end, the real disappointment of this film is it's overall conservatism. As one should expect from the aging Chan, there are a lot fewer dangerous stunt sequences, but unfortunately, the content and energy of the story never compensates.

One final gripe, one of the better Hong Kong actors, Tony Leung, makes a very wasted cameo as a makeup artist.

For those die hard Chan fans, this is an okay movie to add to your collection, but most others will want to rent before they buy.

Summary: GORGEOUS! simply speaks for itself
Review: I assumed that whoever gonna read this review is a truly or maybe just a normal jackie chan fan just like me. I have seen & collect almost every Jackie Chan films from laser disc, vcd to especially dvd. And trust me if your a collector of dvd like me definitely include GORGEOUS you wont regret it. One, the movie is not a stereotype of a Jackie Chan movie, the movie is very unique. It perfectly combines all the elements for a good movie, it is basically a romantic movie with lots of humour, but without being cheesy. Although there's not too many fight scenes in this movie, but the fight scene you will see in this movie is just truly out of this world, guaranteed that you have never seen before. Second, Tony Leung's character in this movie is hilarious and unusual, if you are familiar with this actor, it's been a long time since he played this type of role, in fact if i remember correctly, i've never seen him play this kind of character before. He really adds color to the movie. And lastly, check out the dvd it is fully loaded, this is a breakthough for a Jackie Chan dvd, i own most of his dvd titles and next to Rush Hour, nothing is as loaded as this specially since it is a Hong Kong production. Special features include behind the scene footage, plus! dig the music video featuring the movie soundtrack, it's truly magical! You will never tire of listening to the theme, it is that great!

Summary: A good compromise between action film and 'chick flick'
Review: Gorgeous is a wonderful movie. I won't repeat what other reviewers have said, but this is arguably Chan's best all-appeal film ever. The movie has enough plot and drama to keep any romantic going, and enough humor and action that the guys won't fall asleep. And Bu is so cute ... (although the pun in her name gets lost in the dub). Get this! It's a great movie.

Summary: A gorgeous story, but bad dubbing.
Review: When I went to a discount store the other day, I was suprised to see that Gorgeous was priced to buy (finally!). I waited two years to check out this film, and it was worth the wait. Jackie plays a different kind of character from his other movies. And the plot is also focused around a romantic plot as well. Shu Qi, who plays Bu, is a charming distraction to Jackie's character of C.N. Chan. She's loveable, and believes that everything has a happy ending. How can you not like her? Even her opening monologue sounds like something out of a fairy tale. Don't expect any death-defying stunts in this one. But on the plus side, it has some dynamite fight scenes in which Jackie makes memorable use of a jacket and some baseball bats. The downside of Gorgeous is in the dubbing. Jackie and much of the original cast didn't provide their own voices. I think it's the fact that Jackie didn't have plans to release this in this U.S. because he thought it was too Asian for an American audience. But some American film distributors wanted it anyway, and used their own voice talent for the film (the guy that did Jackie's voice didn't even sound like Jackie). The dubbing, though, is only a minor distraction from the enjoyment of this film. There are plenty of one-liners to make up for that. Give this one a look. It might grow on you.

Summary: Great movie but where are the stunts?
Review: This is a great Chan movie. Kind of like Jackie's version of Pretty Woman. A billionaire (JC) meets a poor girl and at first he doesnt really like her but then she grows on him. Has some good humor and the few fight scenes that are in the movie are awesome. He faces a white guy (Forgot his name) that has some really fast kicks. He fights him twice and both fights are fun to watch. Other fight scenes are on a yacht and a fight in an alley against some gangster guys with baseball bats. I didnt know there were so many ways one person can beat the #&$% out of someone with baseball bats, but Chan found a bunch of them. Jackie doesnt use the environment around him so much like he usually does but he shows off some really great moves anyhow. I am definately getting this movie when it comes out on DVD.

Summary: Very good story
Review: It has been a while since I saw this but the store as well as the fight scenes are great. I don't remember that many fight scenes but the last one was cool.

Summary: Most annoying - but best Chan fight scene EVER!
Review: Shu Qi is so annoying I cringed whenever she opened her mouth in this mediocre Chan film. I dunno, maybe Chan was dating her or something. A love story? Bleh. I hated it.

I can only recommend the movie for the absolutely stunning fight scenes pitting Chan with Brad Allen. Incredible martial arts action. No wires and camera stunts here - just pure, unadulterated, REAL fight moves performed by two of the best film martial artists you'll ever have the fortune to see.

Summary: I'm a pushover for Jackie Chan movies!
Review: Although this is not a stereotypical Jackie Chan movie, it is certainly a charmer. The action scenes are happily quite good, and the story, while a littler formulaic, is fun to watch. If I were empress of the planet, I would have this movie re-dubbed with the original cast doing their own voices (especially Jackie Chan - he has a great voice!), because the English-dubbed voices are a little distracting (but not too much so!).

It's a great little jewel - maybe not the biggest rock in the jewelry store, but great quality and worth it!

Summary: "Don't Worry, Be Happy."
Review: Jackie Chan movies are the kinds of movies you go to for the action and the comedy, with the story as an afterthought. GORGEOUS illustrates this like no other Jacki Chan movie I've ever seen in my life. The action in this film is really fueled more by the sub-plot and this is also one of the only Jackie Chan films in which he did NOT dub his own voice.

Not that all this matters. There is the mandatory kung fu fighting permeated with comedy here, but the actual plot boils down to something new for Jackie. It's not a action story, comedy story, or a martial arts story. No, what GORGEOUS is "about" is...... a love story. Jackie is Chan, a rich business dude who always been a bachelor and has alot of prospects for what attractive women he should go out with. Through a series of weird events, Taiwanese girl Bu (Taiwanese babe Shu Qi) is in Hong Kong, and is eager to win Chan's heart.

That's the love-oriented plot. The action/comedy-oriented sub-plot involves one of Chan's business rivals (and childhood best buddy) plotting to defeat him, humiliating him in hopes of gaining dominance over him in their two corporations.

His plan held echoes to RETURN OF THE DRAGON for me. He calls in Alan (Jackie's friend and fellow stuntman Brad James Allan), an undefeated lightweight kickboxing champ to defeat Chan.

That's what powers this movie. It's interesting to see Jackie with a romantic interest in a kung fu comedy. He's had love interests before, like in his his POLICE STORY films, where his girlfriend May was played by Maggie Cheung, whose very attractive, and in SHANGHAI NOON it was Lucu Liu, who is also quite lovely, and RUMBLE IN THE BRONX, it was yet another fine lady, Francoise Yip. But those were never the prime focus of his films. They were all action comedies with a handful of romance to them. GORGEOUS is just the opposite:it's a romantic comedy with a hepling of action (though there's still plenty of it to please Jackie's legions of fans.)

I really liked the choice of Shu Qi as Bu, Jackie's love interest. Shu Qi is very easy to see Jackie hooking up with her, and even though I never heard speaking English until THE TRANSPORTER, she still makes you truly believe that she loves Jackie and wants to be free from her family to have her own romatic life.

I also really liked Brad Allan in this movie, particularly in the two epic martial arts battles he has with Jackie. Allan displays here that he is every bit the martial artist Jackie is, and he may actually go down in history as the first of Jackie's on screen adversaries to ever defeat him (in the first match, mind you. You'll have have to see for yourslef if Jackie wins their second fight.) It's also nice that his character is not really a bad guy, he's just an opponent who fights for the fun of it. There's never any attempt by either of them to kill each other, and their two fights a very well staged. In fact, it may not be possible for Jackie or Allan to film betters fights in their films.

GORGEOUS is not like RUSH HOUR or SHANGHAI NOON, where the life a kidnapped girl is at stake, or like POLICE STORY, where he's framed for murder. It's just meant to be a family friendly romantic action-comedy, and that's exactly what it is. There is never a single gun pulled out in this movie, Jackie and Shu Qi make a great couple, and Brad Allan is an opponent who always fights fair. Watch it with the whole family as soon as possible. You'll love all the romance, comedy, and karate battles available.I guarantee it will make you're jaw drop. The things Jackie does does in GORGEOUS with not one, but FOUR baseball bats would make Babe Ruth's jaw drop.
