Summary: What a dump, and I still enjoyed it!
Review: This is a truly unique movie. The leads can't act, the sets look rediculous, the plot is so thin, you hardly know it is there, but it is still wonderfully entertaining. Flash Gordon makes one big joke out of every other science-fiction movie ever made. The supporting cast, led by Max von Sydow and Timophy Dalton gives their best possible performance, even if Dalton has trouble at times to keep a straight face. The sets are so crummy, that they only add to the entertainment, von Sydow has a great time being evil. An excellent movie for the whole family. The children will take it seriously and love it (there is even enough sex to make them think their almost grown-up) and adults will have a good laugh. Either way, nobody is going to be bored.

Summary: A fun filled 80's trip
Review: This is one of the greatest early 80's flicks of all time. A real comic book fantasy come to life on the big screen. It's is filled with wonderful performances, from the energetic Sam J. Jones as Flash, the beautiful Melody Anderson as a very convincing Dale Arden, the young Timolthy Dalton (one of the James Bonds) as the Baron, and the unforgettable Max Von Sydow as the pure evil Ming the Merciless. The special effects, even in this day of computer animation, still blow me away. There is a wonderful score by Queen which keeps the movie in full motion. This movie is from my youth and my friends and I always seem to come up with some great quotes from this movie. "Klytus, I'm bored. What play thing can you offer me today?" "Prepare her for our pleasure! " One quick question: Why on earth did they pick Flash to be the quarterback of the NEW YORK JETS?

Summary: Interceptor says: If you like sci-fi, you'll like this.
Review: I first saw this movie when I was about three years old. Even then I was already nuts about sci-fi movies. What I liked about it then is what I like about it now. The action and the music. Over all it is a great movie. My favorite part is when Flash and the Hawkmen are attacking the War Rocket "Ajax". That I feel is where the music was best of all. As far as the characters in that sceen, I really got a kick out of Vultan. You can't watch him in that scean and not get the impression that he had just been so anxious for that moment that he could taste it. That's all for now but, keep a sharp lookout. You don't know where The Interceptor will turn up next.

Summary: Go Flash Go!
Review: This has to be one of the silliest, over-the-top, campest films of all time....but then wasn't the Flash Gordon serial? Just try turning this off once you start watching it!

Sam Jones (as plastic as a Ken doll) is great as Flash Gordon - football star turned space superhero. Max Von Sydow literally oozes evil out of every pore as Ming The Merciless. But as far as I'm concerned, it's Ornella Muti as Princess Aura who steals the show. She literally slinks through every frame like a sex-starved she-devil in the most amazingly foxy costumes I have ever seen.

Watch out for Timothy Dalton as Prince Baron, the fabulous Brian Blessed and a cameo appearance from Richard O'Brien (Riff Raff in The Rocky Horror Picture Show).

"Flash Gordon" is great fun - a definite must-have for your DVD library. Amazingly, this movie has improved with age. It now has crystal clear images and great Digital Surround Sound.

OK, so the sets and special effects are cheesey by today's standards, but this is sheer escapist fun from go to whoa. It's worth the price just to see the glittering costumes, amazing set designs and to listen to the great soundtrack by Queen.

Summary: SDIG (So Dumb, It's Great!)
Review: Action, Adventure, Romance, . . . AND A KILLER SOUNDTRACK BY QUEEN!!!!!

Okay, this is one of the silliest, campiest films I've ever seen. It's also one of the most enjoyable, if you're into that sort of thing! Even nearly twenty years after its release, it's still enjoyable. Max von Sydow plays the villain Ming the Merciless BEAUTIFULLY; you love to loathe him! Ornelia Muti is fantastic as Aura (aka Slinky. Watch, you'll see what I mean!). Brian Blessed is fantastic as Voltan (I have to mention him, he's my mother's favorite character in the film!). The story structure is great, considering that Flash Gordon was done previously as movie serials. One could easily imagine, at certain points of the film, a loud narrator saying, "Will Flash get out alive, rescue Dale Arden, free Mongo from the tyranny of Ming, and save the Earth? Tune in next time!!!"

This is one film that has to be seen letterboxed to be appreciated. After watching an old tape copy, and then letterboxed, there's no comparison. The colors are much more vibrant, the scenery that much better, the action that more BANG!ZOOM! (Can you think of a better way to describe it?) If you love, or even as little as "remotely like" this film, pick up the widescreen version. You won't be disappointed.

P.S. This is to the reviewer who complained about watching widescreen films on a 27-inch TV. I know it's a matter of personal taste, but I think all films should be released on video in their original aspect ratio. I don't have a problem with letterboxing, even on my 20-inch screen. WIDESCREEN RULES!!!!!

Summary: Space Cheese at it's finest
Review: The women in this film are drop-dead gorgeous, especially Princess Aura (Ornella Muti). The sets are appropriately grandiose and over-the-top. The dialog is wonderfully comic-book-like and the satin outfits are delightfully cheesy. In fact, everything about this campy little space movie is cheesy -- so why do I like it so much? "BEHOLD THE POWER OF CHEESE."

Summary: What "Star Wars" Should Have Been...
Review: Oh how I tire of George Lucas and his growing sense of seriousness with the Star Wars films! Now this "Flash Gordon" fellow gives me some hope. This is a fun and flashy film, like a comic strip come to life on the screen. The dialog is appropriately cheezy, the visuals are splashy, and the music by Queen keeps things speeding along. Max Von Sydow as Ming the Merciless makes you wonder how he ever managed to pull off playing Jesus ("Greatest Story Ever Told"). As Star Wars becomes more and more humorless, I go back to Flash... Saviour of the Universe. Indeed!

Summary: Seen it 20 times
Review: This is one of those kind of movies you can watch every Sunday sitting in front of the TV with a bowl of raw cookie dough. Quite possibly the best goofy space movie ever made. It defined the 80s for me.

Summary: What a great soundtrack
Review: The movie's greatness can be summed up by one thing . . . Princess Aura. See the movie, and you won't need an explination. How come they have Russians and Brits in space anyway?
