Rating: Summary: ABSOLUTELY FUN!! Review: Action, Adventure, Romance, Intrigue, Special Effects. This is the best movie Clooney has made. A suburb acting job by Nicole Kidman. This excellent movie portrays some of the best scenes in an Action film I have ever seen. I can't stop watching this movie. (Please note however, much of the curse words in the movie are tossed around a little too liberally - so be forwarned). Rent it and then buy it, you won't be disappointed!
Rating: Summary: The thinking man's action movie Review: I remember reading reviews of this movie when it was first released. On the basis of those rather scathing reviews, I would have to conclude that Peacemaker was the worst action movie ever made. Of course, there are plenty of action movies that have earned this title - Mod Squad, anyone? And then I borrowed it on video, and finally understood what happened. Mimi Leder was also the director of 'Deep Impact', and the problems were the same - both movies come across better on video than they do on the big screen. Special effects in both films are used sparingly, and the emphasis is on character development and motivation, not pure action and mindless violence. For that reason, Peacemaker is my number-one favourite action movie. I'm tired of seeing action movies where there's more emphasis on killing people and perpetuating racial stereotypes (re: True Lies) than with plotline and development. It's refreshing to see a movie where even the "bad guys" have genuinely believable and (dare I say it) believable motivations. I was surprised to see that some reviews, both online and in print, have intimated that the film isn't any good "because it was directed by a woman". In this day and age when more and more women are assuming positions of responsibility and making extremely valuable contributions to society, this kind of view really does belong to the stone-age. This film deserves to be evaluated based on its own qualities, not on the gender of its director. The Peacemaker is a well-directed action film with some charming actors and a believable storyline. Its only downside (and it is a very minor one) is that the director doesn't take advantage of the vast palette available to most big-screen directors. This however is a minor failing. Other than that, it's a thoroughly enjoyable action-movie.
Rating: Summary: Militarily accurate U.S. Army Special Operations to a point Review: Has Leonard Maltin ever done anything REAL in his life other than write movie reviews? If not, how can he tell us what is realistic in a military movie? When I saw this movie at an Army post full of a wide cross-section of SF, Ranger, Airborne types I didn't hear the normal murmorings that this is "phony" or "unrealistic", in fact we were all stunned by the accuracy and since that time you don't hear much about this film sharp-shooting its details. Silence is golden. The reason is that the movie is a sobering reminder that America is vulnerable to a backpack nuclear device and we had best take some measures to secure our borders. The bad guy, bitter over how his wife/daughter were killed and peacekeepers did nothing (throw smoke grenades, anyone if snipers are firing?) is entirely realistic of the many who would seek to "get even" with the U.S. for trying to bring peace to their country. The best, most realistic action was how LTC Devoe (Clooney) handles the businessman and then the car chase/demolition derby ruthlessly; this is how it really is when the stakes are for keeps and the preliminaries are done. The moral toll it takes is significant. The "situational awareness" of satellite imagery is more reasonable than what we saw in "Enemy of the state" and more likely. My quibble is that we sent in SOF operatives in slow-flying French helicopters to "snatch" the rogue backpack nukes when its more likely we would have launched a fighter-bomber strike and exploded the weapons and then offered to help the Russians clean-up the contamination (think 1965 B-52 crash in Spain) since it was in a remote area. The film shows at the end the fact that a nuclear device can be exploded without "exploding" nuclearly. If we had sent ground troops in, they would have had air defense suppression, flown lower, nap-of-the-earth in American Blackhawks/Pave Low III helicopters and not likely to have been hurt by the SAMs. Next, there would be back-up forces to seal off the target area so none of the nuclear devices would have escaped the ambush to continue the movie and reach New York City. A lot of this was not done to give LTC Devoe a chance to do some on-scene heroics. The other quibble is that the police sniper would have been ordered to shoot to kill in a nuclear situation, PERIOD. This means no worrying about civilians in the way; you shoot to kill immediately to stop the threat from exploding a nuclear device. If this had been done, the movie would have ended right there, but we needed the suspense to continue. The last quibble is the ending when they insure the bomb will not explode in a nuclear fission/fusion reaction but it explodes and spreads its radioactive contents. Besides everyone in the immediate local area dying instantly if it was plutonium, the entire area would need to be sealed off and covered with some kind of absorbant to prevent thousands of New Yorkers dying. Aside from the quibbles, this is a 5-star depiction of Army Special Operations that should be viewed alongside Clancy's "Clear and Present Danger".
Rating: Summary: 3 1/2 Stars Review: I do wish that we could do the half star rating here. Anyway when I first saw this movie I wasn't really impressed with it. But I was at the end of seven long years in the Army and I was tired of all things military. A week ago I gave it a second chance. Now, many months after leaving the Green Machine, I find this movie is better then I remember. Like the first review said this isn't a big scale, over the top, Hollywood action flick. The bad guys are believable and some are even sympathetic, to a point. The special effects are subdued, the writing is brisk, the suspense is constant and the soundtrack is invigorating. Actually I found it preferable to the Joel Silver and Jerry Bruckheimer school of action films. George Clooney plays a somewhat arrogant, but charming hero is also capable of being very deadly. Nicole Kidman does a capable job playing an academic who arises to the emergency at hand. Nowhere in the movie is there superhuman heroics or larger than life bad guys. This isn't a masterpiece but it is a nice way to pass the evening.A Tom Clancy story without the verbosity. Or to paraphrase another reviewer it's like the Day of the Jackal only better made.
Rating: Summary: Not Bad, But could have been better Review: George Clooney and Nicole Kidman make an odd pair in this film about efforts to locate ten stolen nuclear weapons before they can be used to destroy the UN. The script needed extra work on it. The movie does have some terrific combat and airel combat footage ever made on film, and that is perhaps the best part of the whole movie. The climax is slowly filmed and takes forever to go anyplace.
Rating: Summary: post cold war thriller Review: It is a time of nuclear disarmament. Ten nuclear war heads are being transport for destruction through Russia on board a train. The train crashes into another train, detonating a nuke. Is it deliberate or an accident ? Enter Nicole Kidman as Dr. Julia Kelly, head of the White House Nuclear Smuggling group, its her job to deal with this potential crisis. In comes George Clooney too, as a Special Forces Colonel, to be a military liaison, "make sure he can work with a woman" is Kidman's recommendation to Clooney's commanding officer. Working together in close cooperation Clooney initiates Kidman into the practicalities of fieldwork. At first Kidmans' egghead approach is real slow and clumsy but soon she and Clooney are a team chasing down the bad guys. An exhilarating musical score and a top notch script keep the action moving in this Dreamworks production.
Rating: Summary: very good at first Review: this movie starts out well, with the scenes in russia. i really thought this was going to be a good movie, but then the scenes in new york just seemed so fictionus. they just didn't seem believable. don't get me wrong i really like the movie, but the first parts in russia is what really hold the movie together. besides nicole kidman looked really hot, and that's all that matters.
Rating: Summary: This movie is what makes DTS incredible Review: This was my 1st movie on DTS format and money well spent. I had the regular version and it is nothing compared to the DTS format you actually get into this movie more if you have the DTS activated. This is a must buy for you sound lovers.
Rating: Summary: Thriller Review: This movie has a lot of exciting action. Even though it may not be one of the best, you would find it entertaining if you like action.
Rating: Summary: Best action thriller I have EVER seen! Review: "The Peacemaker" is one of my favorite movies & is most definitely the best action/thriller I have ever seen! Clooney sparkles as miliatary field operative Lieutenant Colonel Tom Devoe & Kidman fits her role well as Dr Julia Kelly, the inexperienced head of the Nuclear Smuggling Group. The acting is superb, the screenplay well written and the plot fast-paced. This thriller kept me on the edge of my seat! My favorite part was at the end (won't spoil it for people who haven't seen it). And some of the scenes between Clooney & Kidman make me wish I could take Kidman's place! ;) This movie is absolutely superb & I highly reccomend you buy it immediately if you care for action, romance or if you like George Clooney or Nicole Kidman! I give this film an A++++++++!
