Rating: Summary: Platoon is a remarkable experience Review: I was haunted by this movie. It tells the captivating story of Chris Taylor, a young infantryman serving in Vietnam. Through the course of the film, we learn about the everyday struggles, fears and divided loyalties that overwhelm the Platoon's "grunts." The chief conflict, we learn, is not between the Americans and the elusive Viet Cong, but between two sergants, Elias and Barnes. Platoon is certainly a religious parable, as Barnes is the embodiment of evil, and Elias is a Christ figure. Elias is a realist. The war has made him cynical, but it has not dehumanized him. He still believes in the dignity of man. Barnes, on the contrary, is a sadist who has succumbed to the evil surrounding him. The film uses symbolism very well, heightening the dramatic experience. I would suggest Platoon for those who are not faint-hearted, but also for those captivated by powerful storytelling
Rating: Summary: This was the most realistic view of the war yet!! Review: Oliver Stone did a great recreation of what the war was really like. The plot was great. It did a good job on what the war was really like.
Rating: Summary: A man's film Review: While everytime a Nam film is released most people look for the WHAT A LOST CAUSE or OH THE HUMANITY HOW AWFUL aspects and then pile on words like HEART WRENCHING and POWERFUL to make every single Nam film seem like a sad journy into, whatever. Do not be fooled here, for this film is about men who kill and enjoy it, sadly the film's central character is a sometimes unrealistic whiney rich kid who cries a lot but ends up kicking tons of arse in the end. I would have much liked to see the film from Tom Berenger's characters point of view, it would have been far more fun just to watch him and his goons go around shooting people for no reason. And make no bones about it, this is where the real entertainment lies in is watching people get shot in this movie and then the characters make macho speeches and remarks, like it or not this film wants you to enjoy what you're seeing and it works because so many people revisit it. The combat scenes are intense and contains plenty of scenes of insane screaming people shooting people in the face and crushing skulls in with the butt of their rifles. The most hilarious scene in the film comes when the troops march into a village and beat the living crap out of everyone, smash in a retarded kid's head (LOOK AT THEM BRAINS, I would have liked to see the brains, MPAA wusses out again), blow an old lady away and there's even a rape of a girl who can't be past the age of 13. Watching Charlie Sheen's wimpy character try to be MR.PEACE around all these mighty buttkicking savages is pathetic and hilarious. Another great scene comes when Berenger blows away Willem Dafoe, who despite being really cool by doing lots of drugs to escape reality (actually, drinking would help that more, weed isn't nearly as good, and Oliver Stone does TONS of drugs) tries to rat Berenger out for having a little fun. The film comes to its close after a cool battle where lots of people get blown up Sheen blows Berenger's guts out, not knowing that he is now the true badass. Overall this is a MAN's movie that is extremely hilarious and fun to watch, I never understood any of the DRAMATIC or SAD scenes or even noticed them, the use of classical music during Dafoe's hilarious death scene is used just as Monty Python would have. No doubt you don't like my review already but consider just how funny alot of the scenes are, and they're meant to be, despite Stone trying to recapture his preaching/shockingly realistic feel he got with Salvador, which was actually horrifying to watch, the scenes in this film are just that, scenes in a movie made to entertain. On the surface, a dramatic war masterpiece, on the inside, a black comedy for Sam Peckinpah fans who like to watch people get shot by cool guys who cuss and drink alot. This film went on the spawn the worst NES game EVER made.
Rating: Summary: not God as some people praise it at but pretty damn good Review: very very enjoyable flick, mainly because it reminded me of FMJ(full metal jacket) and the humor was pretty good too. i might have preferred this film a little better if charlie s. wasnt in it but he actualy didnt do that bad of a job one part i found hysterical was that johnny depp has a part in it. with short blonde hair and he just is walking by then gets blown up. this film should deffinalty be in a war collects colection.
Rating: Summary: The Greatest Vietnam Movie, In my opinon. Review: Oliver Stone's "Platoon" is one of the best and most powerful of all war pictures. It is the best movie ever made about the Vietnam war. Stone's film is gritty, frighteningly realistic and incredibly powerful. Stone doesn't just show us the Vietnam war, he takes into the Vietnam war. The screenplay is brilliant and doesn't fall into the trap that other war films fall into, where the violence turns into a fun experience and fighting seems "cool." This is a movie that truly shows the horrors of war realistically and with great effect. The cinematography by Robert Richardson (JFK, Natural Born Killers) is rich and gritty, giving more feeling to already great material. The characters are believable and convincing. It's great work because Stone himself went to Vietnam, so he has a better idea of what happened than Francis Ford Coppola when he made "Apocalypse Now" (which is also a great movie). "Platoon" is mesmerizing, powerful, effective, disturbing and even philosophical. It is one of Stone's greatest works. He ignites the screen with passion. The music is incredibly moving. No other director has made better films about Vietnam than Stone, who's "Born On The Fourth Of July" and "Heaven And Earth" followed "Platoon," and opened our eyes to greater clarity. I was never less than spellbound by this work. "Platoon" vibrates with realism and energy. A very special motion picture
Rating: Summary: Platoon Best war movie ever Review: Platoon captures the heart of the Vietnam war. It is a gut wrenching story of war, loyalty and betrayal. For someone who was not alive to be able to see and almost feel what their parents and grand parents live through during these times is remarkable. It shows the struggle between soldiers who believe in the war and those who dont. It shows that no matter who you what you did or how much money you had, in war everyone is the same. It shows you a side of war most movies dont it shows you the dark side. Most war movies show you about the American hero who takes on the enemy by himself. Platoon shows us some of Americas bravest as well as some of the most disgusting people that America has to offer. It is a story of one rich kid that didnt want to sit back and watch all the poor kids go to war while he stayed in school to aviod war.
I for one dont like many of Oliver Stones movies but for some reason this movie is different. Stone is usualy all about the conspericy or the cover up in this film he drops that and he simply wants to tell the story. Sure we can disagree over some of the details but I think it is an excellent retrospective of the times and the war. BUY THIS FILM
Rating: Summary: Brilliant Review: This is the best war film ever. It is a lot better than Apocalypse Now which is overrated. Platoon is more ralistic and entertaining and Apocalyspse Now is on for to long.
Rating: Summary: Review: Oliver Stone's Platoon Review: I like Tom Berringer and a fair amount of the acting was OK. however, as a Vietnam combat veteran I found Oliver Stone's portrayal of day-to-day life in a combat unit to be a silly characiture of what it was like. The combat scenes were unrealistic and overdone and, while it was mildly intertaining, it fell WAY short of delivering even a slightlky realistic portrayal of combat in the Vietnam War.
Rating: Summary: Terrific. Review: This movie was great, easily charlie sheen's best. The scene that caputre stone's genius is when Willem Dafoe is shot. Ingeniously christ-like.
Rating: Summary: The rare movie that is mixed human drama and war drama Review: At first, because it was very long ago that I watched this movie, please consider that I can not review in detail.
This movie is the best movie that have been moved me very much even now. Because I am not so old age, I do not know about Viet Nam War very much, in fact I was not born under the war. But by watching this movie, I can understand a little how the war was very hard, the scare that U.S armys could not serch for the enemys for jungle, the guerrilla who might assault their armys whenever, or struggle with the humid bad condition by rain and muddy water..
But the great points of this movie is not the prominent reapperance of the war only, that is, what was mixed human drama to this movie. One person who I had thought that had nice humanity changed a mad killer as the war got bad condition, or there were soldiers who took care their partners even if they lost their lifes. Generally in Japan, "if people exists into extreme bad condition, they show their true human nature" such the sentence is often quoted. By chance I might look at the thinking way on the movie.
Maybe if this movie was just a war film, the movie would not won the Academy Award. In addition to them, by being included human dramas, the movie became a great movie.
Thank you for reading poor English.
