Summary: a real SUCKbuckler
Review: Fans of the genre should not waste their time or money. I went in thinking that the 'wiry' fight scenes might be an interesting change, but was thoroughly disappointed. Each was more ridiculous than the next, reaching ludicrous heights in a scene where several bad guys are fighting the good guy, all hanging on ropes from a tower--original, yes; good, not remotely(just cut the rope!?!!). Throw in a sub-par script with poor character development, supa-cheesy love scenes, and lines that even tim roth couldn't make work, and you have the makings of the worst musketeer movie ever.

Summary: Loved it
Review: Peter Hyams' THE MUSKATEER is a wonderful movie. It delivers a solid story, pretty good characters, great visuals & action, great adventure and good fun. Those who like period pieces are in for a treat. The story -- dealing with political conflict between England and France in the 17th century -- is interesting. While the drama is not amazing, I thought it was pretty good and held my attention throughout. One detraction comes on the dialogue side. Some of those would-be witty lines missed the mark. The characters are nicely handled. I thought they did a good job distinguishing who was who, and gave every role some significance to the events at hand. A special note should be made for Tim Roth, who again plays a decidedly nasty villain. Dressed in black, we have here the Darth Maul of the 17th century. Roth has delivered not one extraordinary villain performance this year, but two (see PLANET OF THE APES). Hats off to Tim Roth. Visually, I thought it was great. Hyams fills up the (2.35:1) frame with beautiful sights and brings you right back to this era. Castles, landscapes, etc. all look great and make this film look like it had a pretty big budget. The action was awesome. Those who like swordfighting should NOT miss this. They were really smart to get Xin Xin Xiong to do the stunt chreorgraphy, because he got some really good swordplay on the screen. And there's a nice big nod of the cap to ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA.
David Arnold deliveres a fine score, with the obligatory trumpet adventure main theme. I also loved the deep bass of the horses hooves hitting the ground. (And there's a minor homage to A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS for you Leone fans out there.) Check this movie out! It is definitely the movie to see now. I look forward to it on DVD.

Summary: Good action, good standalone plot
Review: If you go into the movie expecting a telling of Dumas book based strictly or very strictly on it, you will be disappointed. If, however, you go into it with an open mind, you will probably be surprised. I love the original book but I thought the movie did an excellent job as a standalone plot. It had twists and turns, like the book, the settings were very realistic and the fight scenes were amazing. One gripe about the fighting, often it was very close up so it was hard to see exactly what was going on but that wasnt' always the case. In some cases, the sword play was so fast, it was flat out hard to follow. I found the movie enjoyable, I would pay money in a theater to see it again (the ultimate test of how good a movie is).

Review: With all do respect for the fighting scenes, this movie was about as exciting as watching paint dry. I am serious it is not worth the price of admission. For those of you looking to see a low budget movie with bad acting, slow story line, and great fighting scenes this is the movie to see.

Summary: Peter Hyams should think before he does.
Review: THE MUSKETEER (PG-13, Action Sequences and Brief Sensuality) THE GENRE: Adventure THE CAST: Justin Chambers, Mena Suvari and Tim Roth. THE PLOT: After his parents' murders, D'Artagan (Chambers) finds the man who killed them and heads off with his posse clan of Musketeers to get revenge. WHAT WORKS: Some cool action scenes, great scenery, a worthy performance from Mena Suvari, and a couple of chuckles here and there. WHAT DOESN'T: Non-stop stupidity acting from Justin Chambers who makes the movie seem like it is as boring as the early 1940's black and white TV show, Zorro. There is no character building, no fun plot and no common sense. The action sequences aren't all that great either. This escapade of non-stop old-fashioned fun isn't fun anymore. And this film is so typical that you already know how it ends right from the beginning. The plot has been played out so many times in so many movies, that this film makes it one to many. And the eight year old comic relief didn't help much either. Peter Hyams springs off a fantasy adventure where the movie is so dull, the film being great is a fantasy in itself. THE CATCH: You will be entertained to some point reguardless. The film really doesn't have such spontanious action scenes and special effects like it claims. We've seen a lot better. OVERALL: "Justin Chambers gets some kicks, falls in love with a hot chick, tries to give this film some gallic wit, but can't do anything for this rather cheezy flick. Pass on this one and check out something more fun."

Summary: A Disappointment
Review: I was really excited about seeing "The Musketeer", but the film turned out to be the biggest let down of the year! "The Musketeer" could have been a great movie, but the plot was wooden and involving, the acting was terrible and the characters were thin. The fight scenes, though impressive, don't really it in with the movie. What on earth are Catherine Deneuve and Mena Suvari doing in this movie?! Mena Suvari was halfway decent compared to the other acting jobs in here! Justin Chambers portrays D'Artagnan, but he's terrible too. I was really really shocked at how weak the script was. The plot was too muddled with needless little side stories and the dialogue was so terrible that it made you cringe! The climax of the film doesn't excite and involve audiences because of the lack of involvement thoughout the film. The costumes, music, and fight sequences are wonderful, but nothing else is. I'm very very disappointed with this film, not recommended.

Review: It takes a lot of hubris to take one of the greatest adventure stories ever told and completely throw away the plot. The question is, why? The story told here has nothing to do with the Three Musketeers except borrowing the main characters. The scriptwriters must have not had enough imagination to invent their own, as evidenced by the hackneyed story we do get. On top of that, add attrocious acting and rediculous anachronistic action sequences. Kung-Fu musketeers? Forget it.

Summary: Not Crouching Tiger
Review: I love the story of the Three Musketeers. The only resemblance this story has to that is the name of the main characters -- and they have a hard time with that. There are some interesting fight scenes and I understand that the special effects person from Crouch Tiger was also on this film. Unfortunately, the "special effects" start to become comical and towards the end, people (including me) began to laugh. It was like a Jackie Chan movie -- but bad. Nothing about the characters is believable and the have no idea about the storyline. It was visually interesting in parts.

Summary: Seen it before
Review: Although this film is visually beautiful (soft, misty French countryside, etc) the plot has been done far too many times before. Interesting cast; Stephen Rea, Catherine Deneuve, and Tim Roth (one of my favorite actors), with very little to work with. The good guys were too good and the bad guys were too bad. The script was so poorly written that I couldn't stay involved in the story. Ho hum. I kept wondering when it would be over so I could go home.
