Summary: A big left when they "should've" gone forward...
Review: Once again, D'artagnan has graced the silver screen. This time he seems to be a big fan of Jackie Chan and the Matrix. We are presented with the newest and probably the most bizarre version of a musketeer movie to date. I enjoyed it...honestly. Despite all my assumptions, I was very much impressed with the film. D'Artagnan is his usual proud and stubborn self, while the legendary 3 musketeers get not as much screen time as i thought they should've had, but this was focus on D'Artagnan, not them, so it worked. I liked how Peter Hyams did NOT portray Cardinal Richeliu as a coniving wolf in sheeps clothing villian, and how he left the viliany up to Febre, played excellently by Tim Roth-no better choice for Richeliu's right hand man. The love interest between D'Artagnan and Constance is not the best but good enough to stand on it's own. The casting was superbly done and, of coarse, the fight scenes were phenomenal. Not the best, but some of the most creative I've ever seen. Overall it was splendid universe of adventure, beauty and extreme danger, and faster than humanly possible sword fights. I do caution all musketeer fanatics...please see the movie with this in mind: Peter Hyams did not want to follow the book...he had to follow his heart on this one.-Please rmember that or you will NOT enjoy His interpretation of this a compelling hour and a half of what is one of the greatest adventures of all time.

Summary: I thought The Musketeer was wonderful
Review: I dont know if it is because I have a soft spot for quixotic, heroic adventures but I thought that this movie was really fun. Sure it had its flaws but all movies do. Now if you want to see a movie for its historical or realistic value this is not the one to see. But if you like to be entertained this one was wonderful. I liked it so much that I went to see it a second time. This movie also has a little humor which I thought was great. Also if you dont like any other part of the movie, the choreography was absolutely spectacular. There is a little adult content so I would recommend this movie not to every one but to all my older friends.

Summary: Say what you will...
Review: I found this movie extremely enjoyable. I didn't go to see the movie because of the THREE MUSKETEERS, after all it's original title was D'Artagnan. So, to be honest I went to see Mena Suvari and was quite pleased by the overall result of the film. I will admit that there was some poor editing. For example, when all the Musketeers arrive to help D'Artagnan he greats his horse wearing his blue musketeer cloak. In the very next scene he is not wearing it, and it is handed to him. I noticed this in the movie theater and was excited because to be honest, I'm not usually that quick.BUT! If you enjoy movies that take you to another place and another time, then by all means this is a decent movie worth checking out. Or if your Mena Suvari fan, of course she's cute in this too! Enjoy!

Summary: different but enjoyable
Review: okay if you are like man and were forced to read the book at an early age and have seene just about every other musketeer movie out there, than this movie will most likely be a letdown. the focus of the movie, unlike the novel and other movies is solely on Dartagnan. the classic hummor of porthos and Athos has been almost forgotten. the comedic element brought ot the story by alexandre Dumas is not quite there.
However if you are into martial arts, which i also am, then this movie won't be that bad. still poor acting tends to gradually push this movie down the rating scale. some fighting sequences are simply outrageoud, to cause even me to say "okay this is a bit to much." but then again i don't go watch movies to be a critic, i go to the movies to just sit back in the dark room and relax, so i was not completly disapointed.

Summary: It's fun...
Review: Ok, first let me state that this film is poorly directed, horribly edited, and generally doesn't have the best acting you've ever seen. That aside, I did find this film enjoyable. There were plenty of parts I found myself grumbling about, but overall I liked this movie. Maybe it's because I don't have a problem looking past production values, or maybe it's because I have a weak spot for heroic adventure stories. Whatever the case, this film didn't make me feel like I wasted $20.00 (if I count the price of my girlfriend's ticket and concessions). Some people have complained about the fight scenes not being realistic or some non-sense, but I wonder if those same people realise movie fight scenes are normally never realistic. The style fight choreographer Xin Xin Xiong brings to the film adds to it's excitement. It's not strictly traditional european swordsmanship but neither is it asian martial arts. The story, focusing on D'Artagnan, does well to include the "Three Musketeers" (Porthos, Athos, and Aramas) in what 'feels' like a more accurate rendition of the book (I've never read it). If you try to focus on what the movie does well and try to overlook what it does poorly, you should enjoy this film. It's not the best of the year for sure, but good adventure films are hard to come by and this one is worth seeing even if you have to wait for video.

Summary: What Happened to the Classic
Review: Alexander Dumas would not be very happy to see his novel displayed like "The Musketeer." This movie shows a lack of ability to have interesting scenes and decent special effects that are relevant to the times. However, the best parts of the movie were the great fight scenes. "The Musketeer" is the story of a young swordsman from France who has to stop a mad man from sending France into war with two neighboring countries.
This was a horribly written script. The reinterpreted story of D'Artagnan does not do the original novel justice and makes the novel seem less of a classic after seeing "The Musketeer." Bright actors like Stephen Rea, Tim Roth and Catherine Deneuve seem to lose their interest in this film; not only that, they played second to an indolent performance by Justin Chambers and Mena Suvari who show no romantic chemistry. The film also went so far off the original classic that it was treading new water. I don't remember D'Artagnan going on a secret co-op mission to save the Queen.
"The Musketeer" has shown an obvious loss for which decade it was filmed in and the technology available to it. Filmed in the 21st century, the movie has stepped back in time to tell the story of a wanabe Musketeer using the special effects of the 1960's. When the characters were traveling by coach the background looked fake, obviously shot in front of a screen. The sets looked unnatural and unbelievable.
The one thing that made this movie even worth watching (not the [ticket price]) was the fight scenes. They were fun and well choreographed. Unfortunately, the makers of this movie didn't put as much effort into the rest of the movie as they did when there were sword fights.
Even all the fighting could not rescue the life of this movie. The poor showing of screen writing and special effects make this movie the last on a list of "must see" movies of the year.

Summary: Great fight sequences
Review: "The Musketeer" is the story of a young boy who grows up with the dream of becoming a musketeer and winds up on a journey to try and reunite the disillusioned band of musketeers in an effort to save France. I love period films and - with a promising trailer - I became a believer. But this is, for all intent purposes, a TV movie and will probably work best on the small screen. The production values, the plot ellipses and the oversimplification of history become a little too much to take seriously, even entering the film with my "adventure" hat on. Sometimes the film is unintentionally funny (I'm thinking of a particular scene with a tired horse), but I think if I were 12 or 13 years old I wouldn't laugh so hard at those things. Tim Roth is gold and he alone makes the film worthy -- well, along with some sharp fight sequences. Mena Suvari's sharp-tongued maiden is funny at times, but she really doesn't have much to do in the film, other than stand around and try to look pretty, waiting for another opportunity to say a line. And I don't know what Catherine Deneuve is doing in this movie, but she doesn't embarass herself and brings her natural classiness to an otherwise questionable flick. With all that in mind, you now know what you're getting into...

Summary: A mixed bag......
Review: This movie does have your typical cinema standards: Action, plot, and romance. However, somewhere along the way the movie actually drowns itself in its own plot. Also, the character development (especially D'artagnon) is very weak. For all the great fighting and stunts D'artagnon pulled off, and then seeing his sluggish and over-fed supposed mentor...I had a really hard time believing in his character. It was never showed anything about his upbringing or training to attain the skills he possessed...that added to the difficulty I had in believing. The one thing that threw me off was, again, a lack of any attempt on the part of Justin Chambers to sport a French accent; it just seemed strange how a man born and raised in France could have such a keen American accent, much like his love-interest.
Now, the fight scenes did warrant some merit. Finally, swordsmanship was shown for what it actually was-- a martial art. Sure, they more than likely didnt go to those extremes in reality...but it did liven it up a few notches from your standard Musketeer fight scenes. To the guy who asked why they didnt just cut the ropes when they were fighting on the towers: Kinda hard to cut thick rope in the middle of a swordfight isn't it? The Musketeers were (to the best of my knowledge) the Green Berets of their times. Highly skilled and very adept at their craft. I think Peter Hyams and Xing Xing Xiong brought that out ten-fold.
All in all, it wasnt a bad film. There aren't as many fight scenes as you'd think. If you've seen the previews...that's pretty much it. Wait for the DVD or VHS to come out and save a bunch of money in the end.

Summary: Well...
Review: This movie is a good popcorn flick. It has action, little bit of suspense, a villain you absolutely hate (Tim Roth is just a damn good bad guy, thas all), and Mena Suvari. Yeah, it ain't perfect, it ain't Oscar-worthy, but its not bad. One fight scene though, the tower one, really wasn't good. That's why I only gave it a mediocre score, one fight scene. The fight scene on the ladders is awesome, though.
