Summary: Great music, stark surroundings, head on plot.
Review: Some good characters in this film. Stereotypes all. Texas Marshal is straight up. Each of us has known a skirt like the lead one. Willis sprays lead when a lot less would do, but directors need the roar and movement. The sheriff is typical of the worst of the type, does a good job with the part. No one takes a beating like the Willis character does and ever allows it to happen again, though it is necessary to justify all the violence in the end. Too bad directors and writers don't realise that we know that. In real life the real pro's shoot first without worrying about the onlookers opinion. The little bartender is a good character though his part in Blade Runner was a better job overall. I like this film. It's rough and tumble is good for us who have experience in the field. Great soundtrack.

Summary: It's an Ok movie..but a poor remake of a classic..
Review: The movie isn't too bad (It's an OK movie) but compared to "Yojimbo", the movie on which Last Man Standing was based, it pales in comparison. If you must buy this movie make sure to also pick up "Yojimbo"... Just my two cents.

Summary: Ridiculous! Silly! Awful! It's ALL WRONG!!
Review: The whole premise of this film is ludicrous: A group of gangsters take over (get this) a desert ghost town.

What for? Have they all had lobotomies?

What could the gangsters possibly want, or derive from a desert ghost town? Sex? Power? Money? Drugs?

Answer: None of the above. There's no point to their existence in this movie, except maybe to set up a scene where tough guys Christopher Walken and Bruce Willis snarl at each other. Rather than contain much substance, the whole movie is one establishing shot after another.

The film probably would have worked if the gangsters shot up and burned the town to get out of it and move to someplace better, like New York or Chicago, where there were plenty of dames, booze and money to keep them occupied. Unfortunately, that's not what the storyboard called for. As written, the gangster characters in "Last Man Standing" were apparently too dimwitted to appreciate those finer cultural aspects of the gangster lifestyle.

Yohimbo? It didn't even come close. "Last Man Standing" is yet but another floating object in the toilet bowl of modern "B" movies.

Summary: EXCELLENT IN ALL AREAS
Review: This has to be one of the best action, western and gangster movies I've ever seen. All elements of each genre are highly spoken for. The editing, dialogue, cinematography, music, direction and acting are all top class. Everything is fantastically overblown but never preposterous. The sound quality on this DVD during the gunfights is absolutely amazing. It will bug the hell out of your neighbors, but who cares?

Summary: I love it to death.
Review: This has to be one of the best action, western and gangster movies I've ever seen. Willis was perfect for the part of John Smith (his voice-over has some of the best dialogue ever and if you don't believe me check out the opening scene), a gun for hire without a conscience. All elements of each genre are highly spoken for.

The editing, dialogue, cinematography, music, direction and acting are all top class. Everything is fantastically overblown but never preposterous.

As for the film itself, it is very empty but the mood and tone are so very distant and weird, and I totally love it. Walter Hills direction is a well balanced cross between Sam Peckinpah and John Woo. And Cooder's score will transport you right into the movie even on it's own. This wall always be one of my fave movies and it is very much worthy of 5 stars.

The 2.50:1 anamorphic picture is stunning and there are rumors that Hill originally wanted to make it in B/W but New Line Cinema would not let him. To test this out turn your color right down and see how much the film's atmosphere is enhanced from already gloomy to undeniably depressing, BUT IT IS SO COOL.

The DD 5.1 sound quality on this DVD during the gunfights is absolutely amazing. It will bug the hell out of your neighbors, but who cares? Every now and again Walter Hill injects a sudden burst of ferocious, furious and brutal violence that takes your breath away. When people are killed they don't just fall down, they FLY across the room and thru windows.

Extras are brief and not very good (Cast Bios say that Die Hard 4 was released in 1998!) and there is a cool clip of Loaded Weapon 1 hidden in there too.

Summary: Watch Yojimbo instead
Review: This is absolutely NOTHING to the 1961 classic "Yojimbo". This movie is just a remake and another C+ action movie. I'd say Yojimbo is about 10 times better.

Summary: Badass.
Review: This is one of BRUCE WILLIS' best films. An opera of wicked gunplay highlights this retooling of the classic story of YOJIMBO. A great cross between the western and gangster generes that really gets the blood pumping. It's great when filmmakers can show a character that is out for no one but themselves but so damn cool you just have to root for them. WILLIS is great and delivers lines like "I was born without a conscience" with believeable tough guy conviction. Some expertly crafted shoot- outs courtesy of fraymaster WALTER HILL, who knows how to make an action movie that is gritty and mature. Great DVD package that offers great sound (crank the surround during the gun battles for best effect) and picture quality. Great flick.
