Review: Great DVD, great movie. Sound and picture are wonderfully mastered, and the special features are interesting. I can't think of a single reason not to buy this film on DVD, in fact I think that it would be a shame to miss out on it!

Summary: Strategy and Order
Review: Although I have not read the book I did view this movie. This movie is amazing. The small touches, the little things. I was so impressed that I am compelled to purchase it, and to tell people about it. I generally like to view the theatrical trailers on the DVD before I watch any film. The trailer for this movie seemed to show me that I was in in for a disapointment.
I was wrong. The movie is fantastic. The battle of wits behind the scenes b/n the two Colonels was what had me riveted. I do not know what the negative reviewers were seeing when they watched this film. It is as if we saw different films... The true nature of the German atrocities during WWII is well expressed. I understand this work is probably metaphorical. I do not know if any such incident ever occured. I do know enough to say that atrocities were committed...Also,some of the detail in this film were absolutely amazing. The Director should be applauded. I also recommend a move...Sunshine.

Review: or is it because Bruce Willis is such a bad actor. Sorry folks, i think the guy is a jerk. His overacting just makes me laugh and i couldn't take this picture seriouly. Also all this violence is histerical,,,,lets see what more can we give the audience to shock them and make them feel uncomfortable.This movie is a piece of trash and belongs in the trash and Bruce Willis only comfirms this.

Summary: Awesome soundtrack
Review: I liked all aspects of this movie but rather than repeat the already excellent reviews in this forum, I would like to point out the outstanding soundtrack with the widest dynamic range of any DVD I have ever experienced. The average volume setting (set by normal speech level) on my home theater system is -37db. On this disk I had to crank it up to -29.5db, a hugh difference. The result was the fighter attack sequence and the blowup of the ammo dump literally rocked us in our seats. Having participated in many naval gunfire and weapons demonstrations I can attest that this is close to the way it would have sounded in real life. Very few movie soundtracks and NO TV soundtracks ever achieve anything like the real thing.

Summary: JAG Meets Stalag 17 and a New Star Is Born
Review: Two words are sufficient to explain this movie's 4 star rating: Colin Farrell! The man is amazingly handsome, and the camera lingers on his face much longer than would seem usual. He belongs with Christian Kane, Christian Bale, and Ben Affleck as one of the most attractive young actors around. He is also wonderfully talented as an actor. I bought this DVD after seeing Mr. Farrell steal Minority Report from Tom Cruise, and, although it took a long time to get to the "meat" of the story--the trial--it was worth it. As a viewer who watches JAG for the trial scenes and zones out during the rest, I thoroughly enjoyed watching drafted law student Hart do his best for his innocent client. Bruce Willis gave his usual fine, understated performance as Colonel McNamara, the ranking officer in the POW camp, but Cole Hauser was a little heavy handed as the bigot of the barracks. My husband enjoyed this movie very much and was surprised that I enjoyed a movie with not only no love interest but no female presence. Fans of Hill Street Blues might notice Joe Spano in a small role at the beginning of the movie. All in all a worthwhile movie.

Summary: Works as drama, not as a thriller or action/advanture
Review: For the most part, "Hart's War" is a gripping and entertaining movie. It switches courses several times, going from a battlefield adventure to a tense story of racism in the military during WWII to a court-martial drama to, finally, a POW escape thriller. The movie successfully navigates these changes until the climax, where it detours into rah rah patriotism by turning one of its villains into a hero. This allows for a feel good ending, but it lessens the impact of the themes it developed earlier. Lt. Thomas Hart [Colin Farrell] is the son of a US senator. He's assigned to a desk job at the European front, but winds up instead being captured by the Germans and sent to a POW camp in Belgium. There, Col. William McNamara [Bruce Willis], the vindictive, prejudiced leader of the American prisoners, tells him there is no room in the officers' barracks. Hart is forced to bunk with the enlisted men. Later, he is joined there by two other officers. It's easy to see why they were sent there. They are black. When one of them is accused of murdering a white soldier, McNamara demands a court-martial. Hart, who isn't a lawyer, is told to defend the man. Hart is both terrified and angered by the assignment. What he can not know is that there is a method to McNamara's madness. Bruce Willis gives his usual excellent performance, but it is Colin Farrell who is most impressive. The young actor seems destined for stardom. Also great is Terrance Howard as the accused. Despite its faults, I found "Hart's War' to be the best of several war movies released recently.

Review: Well MGM is on the ropes with good movie failing after good movie failing. Perhaps they need a new marketing department. "Hart's War" tells the tale of a young Lieutenant who is appointed to an obviously innocent black man who is accused of murdering a white man in a German P.O.W. camp. The German's agree to allow the court martial, and the trail begins. Everything seems to go against Lieutenant Hart from the beginning, and he is forced to unravel the lies to find who the murderer is and why he is being protected. In a stand for courage and against racism "Hart's War" is rousing stuff. This military drama is a refreshing break from the explosions and guts war films we are used to. Some minor battling/blood is present, but it is brief, critical to the plot, and not fight scenes (A fighter strafing run and bullet to the head). Bruce Willis gives a credible performance as the Colonel in charge of the U.S. prisoners, Terence Howard plays the accused very well, Cole Hauser is excellent as the bad guy, but Colin Farrell steals the show as the title character. Not the pick for bloody war film fans, but definitely for those who like history, or a good drama. Gregory Hoblit ("Frequency") is on top of his game again what a fantastic director. As for the DVD? MGM still uses flip discs! I hate flip discs! Sure it is an easy way to pack wide/full screen on one disc, but invariably fingerprints get on one side. Columbia/Tri Star can fit both and 2 times the special features on their single sided discs! Get a clue MGM! MGM DVD's usually are weak on special features and while this has more than some its mostly just commentaries. The disc is well worth picking up for the film, but I wish MGM's DVD designers would get a clue already.

Summary: Everything but the Kitchen Sink
Review: This film touches so many issues that you need a score card. The emotions that it elicits are its greatest value. Bruce Willis plays a very enigmatic character and gives the meaning of underplaying a role a new definition. Great photography, evasive dialogue and a very moving score actually save this one.

Summary: Colin Farrell lives up to the hype.
Review: As Lt.Hart the young Dubliner Colin Farrell steals the show. His talent is matched by his incredible good looks. I thought Bruce Willis was terrific as well and the movie worked for me. My Uncle was a POW in Germany for 3 years in World War II and I was reminded of the honor and courage those men had. I also had the priviledge of meeting two Black men who flew P51 Mustangs during World War II..they served a country that wasn't just in the treatment of them, I hope young people will see this movie and appreciate the sacrifice that these great men made. Review: If you ever feel the compulsion to rent this movie or (god forbid) buy it, you have to read the book first. Then and only then iwll you have the backdrop nessacary to understand the movie.
