Summary: Not great, but WAY better then # 3.
Review: This movie, although it certainly has it's flaws, is a vast improvement over "Superman 3". Maybe because it didn't rely too much on comedy? Maybe because thay returned Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor? Maybe, but though both were wise decisions, the fact remains that this still isn't a masterpiece. Superman is back, and he's on a mission to rid the earth of nuclear weapons in an attempt to cease all threats of nuclear war. But Lex Luthor has escaped from prison and isn't going to let Superman take away hi main source of money! So, he steals a strand of hair from the museum and mixes his DNA with a nuclear missle, and when it hits the sun, POOF! Nuclear Man is born! The battle between him and Superman is somewhat poorly directed, if you look at the superb fighting sequences in "Superman 2", but how Superman eventually destroys him is clever. Overall, this is worth watching, and I can't understand why all the review books gave this movie such bad reviews!

Summary: The worst of the Superman series!
Review: I remember seeing this movie when it first came out in the theater. I was a little kid back then. I am now an adult and it looks more like a kids movie when I watch it. I do have it on DVD basicaly because I brought the Superman set which looks pretty cool and the covers look awesome. On Superman II, III and IV it only has a theatrical trailer, it doesn't have any other features like the making or deleted scenes. Superman IV had a longer version on TV along time ago. It was like 134 minutes and on the DVD I was expecting to see the deleted scenes that were cut. Bad news, for those of you who don't have the Superman set yet on DVD, Superman IV does not have any deleted scenes which made me a little disappointed. It only shows the 89 minute version which was shown in theaters. If you do want to see some of the deleted scenes and if Superman IV ever comes on TBS again you might see like 2 deleted scenes and that's it. But the Superman movies look pretty good in widescreen better than fullscreen. I think my favorite Superman movie out of the DVD set has to be the first one because it has the trailers, deleted scenes, the making, and screen tests. All and all if you hadn't bought the DVD or video set for Superman go get it because you don't know what your missing!

Summary: SUPERMAN IV: THE QUEST FOR PEACE
Review: This film has the best plot of any of the previous entries. The world is on the brink of nuclear war. So, Superman feels obligated to save earth from certain doom by confiscating all nuclear weapons, and hurling them into the sun. But, Lex Luthor takes advantage of Superman's good deed by creating a Nuclear Man out of Superman's DNA and the nuclear heat of the sun. Creating Nuclear Man was clever because he , like Godzilla, symbolizes the terror of nuclear war. Oh, and the reason that Superman is immune to radiation, yet gets hurt by Nuclear Man's slashes and energy blasts should be obvious: since Nucman is essentially Superman's clone, making him capable of harming Superman! Hopefully, Warner Bros. will digitally remaster this film, restoring the deleted footage(did you know that there were 2 Nuclear Men? Superman kicked the first one's butt, and that's why the second one hates him so much!). With proper restoration, we can see this film in all its glory. Warner Bros. owes it to us loyal fans since, they're kind of responsible for the horrendous condition of this movie! But until changes are made, go rent this movie, buy it, or tape it on tv, because if you(like me) are really into Superman and his films, you'll like this movie. It's fast paced, get to the point, SUPERFUN!!!

Summary: Christopher Reeve MakesIt Worth Seeing; The Jon Cryer Factor
Review: Christopher Reeve will forever be remembered as Superman. I have never been the least bit disappointed in his performances for all 4 movies. He's the reason to see this one, which he cowrote with Lawrence Konner and Mark Rosenthal.Let me just say that Alexander & Ilya Salkind are the ones responsible for the downfall of the Superman trilogy. When director Richard Donner was fired after finishing the first film (and still working on the 2nd film, which he received no credit for), the Salkinds took it upon themselves to turn a winning formula into a cheesy mess. (aka: Superman III). I believe because of this, no big studio had much faith in Superman IV: The Quest For Peace, which is a real shame because it has real potential. The interaction between Christopher Reeve & Margot Kidder is still very strong. And Mariel Hemingway is very likable. Like Annette O'Toole's Lana Lang in Superman III, Mariel is much more interested in Clark Kent than she is with Superman. This relationship could've been filled out a bit more, but I think the writers were afraid it was getting too complicating, what with Superman being with Lois and so on. Gene Hackman returns as Lex Luthor, a good idea to give us back our favorite Superman villain. But this time, instead of Ned Beatty (Otis), who passed on this film, we are given Jon Cryer, who play's Lex's nephew. A little interesting note here: Jon Cryer has said that he singlehandedly put Cannon Films (the makers of this movie) out of business because every movie he did for the company, including this one, was a complete flop. Coincidence? Or is the guy just bad luck? Just something to consider. Again, Warner Brothers didn't have much faith in this movie, which is why they let Cannon Pictures take the helm. As other reviewers atest, Superman IV was much longer, spanning 134 minutes, but was cutdown, due to bad test screenings. Personally, I think they cut way too much, because some of the film makes no sense. For example: After Nuclear Man cuts Superman in the back of the neck with his radioactive fingers, Lois finds him, as Clark Kent, in his apartment, looking very sick. Then of course he uses his green crystal to get well (something I disliked because he's told once he uses it, the crystal will lose its power forever) and then practically the very next scene we see him , as Superman again, trying to stop Nuclear Man from getting his hands on Lacy Warfield(Hemingway). A very odd cut indeed. I mean, where's the hero shot that establishes Superman's return to being at full strength, like in Superman II, when we see him hovering outside the window of the Daily Planet, asking General Zod if he'd care to step outside? Too much editing is one thing that hurt the film. The other thing that hurt it was of course the special effects. You can't make a good Superman movie if you don't have the money for decent special effects. I enjoy watching Superman IV, thanks mainly to the good acting by the stars. I like how Superman is torn between whether or not he should rid the world of nuclear weapons because he is not supposed to interfere with something so huge in society. Again, Christopher Reeve does a great job and I enjoyed what he added to the storyline. If there ever is another Superman movie made, the actor who plays the title role better know that he has some very big shoes to fill. We love you Christopher Reeve! You are, and forever will be...our Superman!

Summary: Bad Filmmaking
Review: I like movies based on comic books. Let me make that perfectly clear. I loved Superman I and II, Blade, and even X Men, and I rush out to see every new comic book adaptation even if it's gotten bad reviews. I wish I'd stayed home when this one came out, though... The plot, while not awful, is not terribly original. I can cope. It's a comic book movie. I don't demand much in terms of plot. What I can't accept is when a movie is filmed and edited like a series of loosely connected comic book panels, without even the Wonder Woman-style captions to say "hey, we did this on pourpose". It looks like the director went to the storyboard meetings, then filmed exactly what was on the storyboard panels and not one single frame more. The result is an extremely choppy, disjointed mess, with performances that might as well have been done by the actors' stunt doubles, for all you can see of their personalities. A first-year cosmetology student could have done a better job of directing this mess.

Summary: "Superman IV: It Shouldn't Have Ended Here!"
Review: Although the film lacked because of the special effects, and the crude editing, I regard it as one of my favorites in the series! It's great because all the other cast members from the first 2 films come back to reprise such brilliant roles! Christopher Reeve's story idea for the film in regards to nuclear weapons was very interesting, and it's the core of everything that Superman stands for! Still I hated the series to have ended like this, and I felt they should made a better film where they all say good-bye to each other! Warner Brothers can try, but they can never replace Christopher Reeve, or any of the other actors!

Review: Superman IV was definately not the best of the series, but it was okay. It suffered from the lack of the right people to make it. It was just plain cheesy. However, the plot of it was good. Superman was only trying to free the world of nuclear weapons as he was asked of, but Lex Luthor's nuclear man just got in the way. Aside from the horrible filmmaking, the plot is basically Superman. However, I would recommend it.

Summary: the worst superman of the series
Review: Most definately the worst superman in the series, the secial effects in this movie look poorer than in superman I. One of the methods they used to make christoper reeve fly was the optical technique, this involved turning supermans blue costume turqoise, and in this movie it was too turqoise! Poor cinematography made it obvious to tell the fake background, and his yellow 's' on the cape looked white instead. If this wasnt enough, the sequences had no end of errors, this includeds Lex and Lenney robbing supermans hair from the museum in broad daylight without being noticed, the woman kidnapped ny nuclear man at the end of the movie somehow breathed in space, lois not realising that clark was superman when he revealed himself after dropping off his flat and the faint of the train driver at the beginning of the movie was a little short and sudden. The dvd quality makes it easier to identify the errors. The first superman was beautiful! its a shame as they went on they got worser, especially the firing of director Richard Donner endded the emotion and energy that was contained in the first movie. Superman 4 lacks all the elements of the previous films, and it looks as if it was made for the sake of making it. As im a Superman fan, I bought the boxset as soon as it was released, if there is anything positive about this movie it's the fact that Superman gets involved in Politics. Overall a not so good movie, buy only if your a true a superman fan.

Summary: Supes gets political.
Review: There should be a law. A star can't be given control of a sequel. It held true for "Star Trek 5" and it hold true here. Christopher Reeve allegedly co-wrote this poor excuse for a sequel... Warner Brothers even lost their faith in this one before it's release. Which shows in the lack of finished effects work. The political undercurrent took away from the self-mocking humor of the first two films. And, Reeve didn't even take the time to get into shape to wear his tights. Gene Hackman is the best reason to see this if you must. But, he's saddled with Jon Cryer as his inept valley-nephew and the walking block of wood Mark Pillow as his main foils...
