Summary: good, scary thiller
Review: phoenix and gandolfini are fabulous, their performances keep the movie afloat. cage, as usual, is a little melodramatic. exceptionally good soundtrack and cinematography.

Summary: Darkly perverse
Review: Nicholas Cage is a great actor, and he does a great job acting in 8 MM. The story-line is also interesting and quite harrowing. I only gave this film 3 out of 5 stars though, because it seems to be lacking a "soul". The characters aren't developed very well, and seem to lack "substance" and emotion (considering what they are put through, you'd think that they would be at least a little more depressed/moody).

However, there were some images in this movie that attached themselves to my brain and have refused to vacate since.

Basically, this movie is about a private agent's perverse constitutional down a lane most of us will be blessed never to know about. This lane happens to be the secret world of "snuff" films ("snuff" films, considered urban legends by many people, are porno flicks in which people, usually young women, are murdered on screen). I found this movie to be too perverse and disturbing to pass off as entertainment. This isn't to say that disturbing material can't be made into great imagery, but the director focused more on the action-part of the movie, rather than the emotional turmoil of the families and agent involved, which would've been a more compassionate approach. All in all, this was a good movie, but not anything I'd rent twice.

Summary: Quite dark and intense.
Review: This was a pretty good film that was dark and surprising. Reading about the plot beforehand, I knew that it would probably be interesting and not run-of-the-mill. 8MM isn't a movie that I consider great, but it no doubt is still decent and not a typical movie. The subject matter is probably not for everyone and some of the scenes people may find disturbing though. That aside, this film was quite interesting and never seemed to lag or get boring. Nicolas Cage did a good job in his role and so did the actor that played the guy from the shop who helped him. I thought that 8MM was good mostly because it was different. I'm sure some people won't like this film, but if you're looking for a movie that's intense and keeps a good pace, then this is a satisfactory one. 8MM took some chances and is worth a watch.

Summary: THE REAL LOS ANGELES
Review: "8mm" is the most honest film about young girls' strange infatuations with moving to Los Angeles to become movie stars. Although the film plays like a typical detective film superficially, the film is actually about the ill-fated death of a naive young girl who ran away to L.A. to become a star and ended up mixed up in porno and snuff films. Nick Cage plays Tom Welles, a surveillance specialist hired by a rich widow to track down the source of a disturbing sex/torture 8mm reel she found in her dead husband's vault. In the film, a teenage girl is raped and murdered on camera. Welles is hired to prove if the film is real or fake. His search leads him to Los Angeles, where he must search for the identity of the young girl killed in the film. Throughout his search he learns of her desperation to become a star and her growing distaste for her small-town roots. Although many people dislike this film, Cage and director Joel Schumacher, it's because they don't understand the message of the film and how close it is to Los Angeles' dirty, manipulative sex underground, where girls are promised they will be stars and end up exploited in pornos. Most filmgoers today are uneducated and don't know how to judge art properly or on multiple levels. "8mm" is a film that deserves to be seen and thought about. The film's highlights include Cage dumping boxes of porno videos and mags on a pornographer's body before setting him on fire, and great location shots of how Hollywood really looks today; disgusting and dangerous.

Summary: At last, a real life hero!
Review: Very powerful movie. It strikes you from everywhere. Pretty original story and very good acting by Cage. Only thing that's sad is that these things might actually happen.

What i liked most though is that, like in Seven, the good guy is not a cool blooded "I can resist anything in the name of the law" guy. He is angry and he lets his anger out! He hates and he lets his hatered show him the way! That may be the "path to the dark side :)"but that's the way people are. If I were in his place I would have done the same thing. I hate movies where the hero will not hurt the bad guy cause it ain't right. That may be the politically correct thing to do but it's not real!

That is to say that I liked this film not only for the story but also because it's more real than most other movies.... and that scares me! it'll scare you too...

Summary: HOLLYWOOD FLUFF - NO LESS, NO MORE
Review: Joaquin Phoenix cannot elevate this movie beyond your typical shock-fluff Schumacher watered-down throwaway

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Great suspence.
Review: This is a movie that has alot of suspence and fear. Some parts might make you think that the director was sick or something. But for some people out there who like suspence and gore, this is the movie for you.

Summary: 8MM
Review: 8MM is a scary look at the world of illegal underground pornography. Nicolas Cage delivers a brilliant performance as the private investigator hired to discover the authenticity of the real of 8MM film on which a girl appears to be murdered. Supported by a brilliant cast, including Joaquin Phoenix and James Gandolfini. This movie puts across a strong message. "When killing monsters, make sure you don't become one".

Summary: Schumacher Is At It Again
Review: From the man who ruined the Batman series comes another waste of time. Nicholas Cage contributes heavily to the awful stench that permeates from 8MM with his dramatic over acting and stiffness. 8MM tires its hardest to be dark, edgy, and surprising, but fails at all three. Luckily, Joel Schumacher decides to explain the entire movie to you at the end with his character "Machine" giving you the entire synopsis behind his mischief, much like a James Bond villain. If you enjoy abusing yourself with obnoxious and tiresome movies, then 8MM is definitely for you. However, if you like movies that are entertaining and have a redeeming quality, stay away from 8MM.
