Summary: James Woods is fantastic. Darkest of Dark Comedy & Drama.
Review: Story of a kid who commits petty crime for cash to buy drugs for himself and his girlfriend. Be-"friended" by James Woods on the promise of becoming a real criminal. Guns, drugs, violence and jealousy follow. Low point in film is Melanie Griffin mumbling through collagen pumped lips, but everyone else is true to form and give great performances. Hard to watch but worth watching for Woods' performance.

Summary: Great ideas, sloppy execution
Review: The expositions of the characters and relationships were more interesting than the characters themselves. Griffith's character is the most interesting because she talks the least. Woods excessive emoting - overly praised in the director's commentary - is exhausting, but this might be believable for the junkie he portrays. What is harder to believe is the transformation in his personality: Near the beginning, he is wild and crazy in a humorous sort of way; by the end of the movie, he has become a homicidal maniac. Perhaps we are supposed to attribute more significance to his reference to these changes from alcohol and the near-death encounter. If so, we have to reach far to accept this explanation, particularly because he has no dialogue which truly reveals his "bottom line" - what he feels most deeply, or his code of values - either before or after this transformation. In addition to these flaws, the characters are never really likeable and the editing is sloppy. Perhaps this is the consequence of the director's method, allowing everyone to do their own thing. This is an interesting movie nevertheless. The DVD is better than average because of the extras. (I believe the mediocre video quality is resulted from poor camera focus rather than poor digital transfer.)

Summary: JAMES WOODS GIVES THE PERFORMANCE OF HIS LIFETIME!
Review: There is not one other actor alive who could have nailed this performance like James Woods. I say nailed because his performance is so sharp that it makes one wonder if the Academy Awards voters actually watch movies. Maybe if they did they would nominate this powerhouse performance. If you are a James Woods fan and you have not seen this movie then what are you waiting for. All I can say is... BOOYAH!

Summary: A ONE HORSE PONY?
Review: This film along with his KIDS may indicate that Mr. Clark may be a one horse pony director, i.e., how many times can he make these films over again and get away with it. The acting performances of the four main principals are what carry this film. James Woods and Melanie Griffith make a great team and I'd like to see them together again (A Day in Paradise II, or Son of a Day in Paradise?).

Mr. Clark's commentary on the DVD is one of the worst I have ever heard. He seems to have a hard time articulating and there are long stretches in which he says nothing at all; I thought he had left the room and the commentary was finished at one point. He struck me as bored with it all. Apparently he was fascinated by some of the lighting effects he achived (and they are good), since he spends a fair amount of time on this point. Also, during one of the most touching scenes in the movie... he comments on the musicians in the soundtrack and remembers the kind of jazz he grew up with.

Despite what one of the reviwers said below, I like scene by scene, even shot by shot comments. They serve as a cpourse in movie making.

Summary: Not bad but inferior to its influences
Review: This film was well-acted overall (Woods is particularly by good) but there's nothing in it that hasn't been done better in other films. Not a bad rental, if you're interested in films of this genre, though. Just don't expect the kind of lasting impact you get from a film like "Drugstore Cowboy", still the finest outlaw/drug film I've ever seen.

Summary: Depressing, violent depiction of low-life junkies
Review: This is a depressing movie of low-life dope dealers and murderers. I based my purchase on the customer reviews on this page, and I am *highly* disappointed. Particularly misleading is the box cover for the movie, which promises a "fun" flick -- nothing could be further from the truth!

Summary: One of the Best films I've ever seen!
Review: This is one of the best movies I've ever seen. I noticed that many people were praising James Woods, and I admit that he is phenomanal in this film. But the person that stood out to me was Vincient Keithweiser (I don't think I spelled that right). He deserved just as much prise as James Woods got if not more. All of the actors did a excellent job in this film and it comes highly recommended from me and all my friends. But don't think this movie is a feel good romantic comedy, it's a very strong action\drama filled with drugs (mainly heroin), sex, violence, and all the drama you can fit into a 2 hour film. I even cried at a few parts (mainly becuse of Mr. Keithweiser's excellent acting during a few sections). Recommended for people 14 and up (if you're used to that kind of stuff in movies)
