Summary: For those who love music...
Review: If you're the one who likes singing, music and stuff like that you'll love "Duets", the movie. I've just seen it and I can say it's wonderful, yet sad at the same time. There are few troubled characters carrying a lot of personal issues to be solved - you really chear for them, you want them to succeed and find out what they are looking for. A karaoke contest is the only event that will make these poor folks get together at the very end of the movie. It's just great! If you have a chance to see it, don't miss it! My favourite song is "Try a little tenderness".

Summary: Only a Bit Upsetting
Review: This was a highly entertaining film, but a flawed one as well. For the most part, all of the pairings in the film, or duets, successfully make the point that we all need someone to help us find our true selves (or some such cliche): the rogue father and ditzy daughter; the hooker with the heart of gold (yes, we recognize that thinly disguised stereotype) and the too-good priestly cab driver; Mr. White Suburb and the Black (doomed to die) ex-con. The strong points of the film are its humor, its music, and its life affirming message. There are a few weaknesses, too, most of which have been pointed out in preceeding reviews. The one that distracted me the most was the wasting of Andre Braugher's great acting talent. He and his over-the-top partner stole every scene they were in. They were a delight to watch, and they were helping each other to find that true self, or whatever--then Braugher takes the blame for a crime (a murder, I assume) that Mr. White Suburb has committed and is killed by the police, and suddenly the bells are going off in my head. Wait a minute. Why is this great actor, the only African American in the film, playing the part of an ex-con (though to his credit he did play it beautifullY)? How many times have we seen Hollywood put a suave, well-spoken black man in THAT role? Did you see this man in GLORY? Did you see him in CITY OF ANGELS? This man can REALLY act.

And why is he making this trite, cliched, illogical, supposedly noble, self-sacrificing gesture? Because Mr. Suburb taught him how to drive a car? I think not.

As an African American, on principle alone, I should give the film a single, wretched star. But the thing was so much fun to watch, that this slap in the face is only just a bit upsetting.

Summary: If you love Paltrow
Review: I loved this movie... I thought it was not only funny but it made me cry. If you love to sing karaoke you'll love this movie. Each character was well done and there was great character development. But if you don't care for Paltrow or singing this is not a movie for you. My recommendation is to see it for yourselves. I heard only bad things about this film but once I saw it, I loved it!

Summary: Yes, yes, yes.
Review: This is why you should never pay attention to jaded reviewers. This movie was a stitch. Watching Giamatti and company pound out their tunes is a blast. And the interplay between he and Andre Braugher is both sweet and stunning. Not a lot to say about this flick. It won't change your world. But it's a great way to spend an evening in front of the tube.

Did I really write sweet and stunning? Can't be.

Summary: Gets better with each viewing
Review: Granted,I hated the movie when I saw it in the theatre. My significant other at the time did too,but something drew her back to see it again(several times, she alone accounts for most of the box office gross). Since then I recently saw it on video, and I realised the appeal of the movie.First it plays better on video, second you understand the characters better.Being a karaoke participant myself,I understand the lost souls who loves to go onstage and have that "5 minutes of fame". The movie is far fetched as three diverse duos travel to a contest for a $5000 purse, to find self discovery along the way.The performances are all fine, and the actors singing range from great(Gwenneth Paltrow<suprisingly impressive>,Huey Lewis<DUH!!!>)to mediocre(Maria Bellow<nice voice, but needs some tweeking>) The standout player is Paul Giamatti as a fed up traveling salesman(with 80,000 frequent flyer miles)who escape the grind through karaoke(he has the makings of a great singer),and comes across convict, played by Andre braugher, who sings like an angel(unfortunately his voice is dubbed),as well as serves as Giamatti's guardian angel. In all Duets is worth a look or two,and don't be surprised if you find the movie stuck in your head.Like most songs, may hate it at first, but the more you listen, the more you like.

Review: I thought it looked good because it was a Gwyneth Paltrow movie. I had heard it was bad so i didnt see it in the theater. I rented it. I almost turned it off in the middle because it was so terrible. This movie should be on your never see list. Kids should not see it eaither.

Summary: The Perfect Compliment
Review: The underline of this much maligned film is that we all have a partner in life that helps us see beyond the glum of the day. Each character was able to realize their shortcomings and enrich their lives through the interaction of their "duet" partner. The vocals only add to the chemistry that eminated from the cast, revealing those telling unsung lyrics.

Summary: otis redding would be proud
Review: when paul giamatti and andre braugher sing "try a little tenderness", i feel my smile lifting me higher and higher. this duet is such a delightful surprise as the singers share the joy of discovering each others kindred spirits in song. the smiles they exchange as each hits the songs sweet spots dead on is really wonderful to behold. giamatti and braugher achieve some great chemistry on screen, a sweetness and indeed, a tenderness, that is rarely seen. these two men from diametrically opposed backgrounds, grow to love each other and the freedom that each grants the other to be who they really are. gwyneth and huey also sing sweet but paul and andre are, for me, the heart of this overlooked gem. see it, listen to it and feel your smile take you higher.
