Rating: Summary: JEREMIAH CHECHIK WORST DIRECTOR OF ALL TIME! Review: Jeremiah Chechik completely ruined the remake of Diabolique although he had a cast to die for,Sharon Stone of the greatest actresses of our time and Kathy Bates who is a great Character actress...here he actually makes a boring action film. All style and no substance even achieving a mediocre performance from the always wonderful Sean Connery. All I Know is when you see Directed by Jeremiah Chechik or Joel Schumacher...avoid it like the plague.Joel Schumacher is supposedly attempting to remake a fabulous french film called L'appartement. That's like having a child restore a painting by Cezanne or Da Vinci....It would be an insult, like this whole film was.An embarassment.
Rating: Summary: great surround effects, true to series Review: I found the movie to be consistant with the Avengers TV series. I was especially glad to hear the extensive ambiance surround effects. Too many movies reserve the rear channels for explosions. The glaring weakness came in several subplots that were never sufficiently tidied up.. it seemed as if either the money budget or the running time budget ran out before the movie was complete so they ran with what they had. In summary I would say at least one of my 4 stars is reserved for fans of the series.
Rating: Summary: Silly, illogical and weird...just like the HIT series! Review: The problem with most TV series is that they try, mostly in vain, to update to modern looks and mentalities. The Avengers is simply a big screen tribute to a little British TV series in the late 60's that many of us remember fondly and vividly from our teen-age years. Nothing is ever as good as the original, but this resurrection is not terribly off-target. Most of the negative reviews would suggest that the authors never saw or were fans of the original. Most of the things they didn't like were what made the show a hit to begin with...silly plots, a total disregard for science-fact, comic book characters...you know, the FUN stuff! This film did not attempt to re-invent the Avengers wheel for the 90's. Sure there are flaws. Uma Thurman should have studied Diana Rigg's Mrs. Peel a little more closely. Yes, Sean Connery was over-qualified for his role, but it looked like he was having fun...a little mindless activity acting for a change? Ralph Fiennes was "right-on" as Steed, and who doesn't love their "Mother"? I also congratualte the producers who were not afraid to include the original music, a television theme classic (one the unforgivable acts of the Maverick re-make). This movie is not for everyone. But for Avengers fans, it's a familiar, fun and mindless visit with an old friend.
Rating: Summary: great fun Review: After i had read some of the reviews for Avengers, I was nervous about not liking the movie, since i liked the series. But I must admit that it was great fun!! But being an Anglofile I can see a lot more funny puns and remarks than most people. So are you into your british humor do not miss this one!!
Rating: Summary: Not as bad as critics said, but hard to follow Review: This movie is quite hard to rate. I found it kind of fun (if it was in it's stupidity). I guess what really ticked me off was the fact that this movie was obviously given the quick cut and paste edit before it was released. I mean, there are so many things in the ads that looked cool that I never saw in the movie. But what happens because of this very bad edit is the movie is incoherent, jumps around and hard to follow. I doubt I could explain the plot to you and I won't. But as to the performances, they're not too bad. While Ralph Fiennes is no Patrick MacNee, he brings the proper John Steed to the screen quite well, even if he is emotionless. And it was fun watching Sean Connery play a villain, even if his span is just ranting and raving in a kilt. But I was disappointed in Uma, who doesn't even try to give an English accent, and even though I thought she looked good in the leather, I was annoyed at her precence just because she was trying to act "super cool!" I like the TV show and this movie is nothing compared to that. What kills the movie besides it's first hour of incoherent babble, is the fact it's an action movie with a touch of British wit. Just a suggestion, but if you're going to add British wit to a movie, do it in a comedy.
Rating: Summary: The best of Uma Thurman Review: Since I had not seen the original series, I was not expecting anything for the actors. What I got however, was a very enjoyful movie. I though it was highly entertaining, and recommended it. I think Uma Thurman finnally broke out of her seductive roles into a more natural and appealing one. If you are not to shallow when you start watching this movie, then you should enjoy it also.
Rating: Summary: Rather Good Remake Good stars but somewhat bad script Review: I saw this movie i actually enjoyed it very much Uma Looks very sexy and sean connery is good a sir August De-winter. the visuals are pleasing to the eye and so is Emma Peel (Uma Thurman) but it is funny and has some suspense to it contrary to what critics said. But all i would have liked for it to be 15 to 20 mins longer. and a little bit of a better script from Don MacPherson.Plus a little bit better direction from Jeremiah Chechik.
Rating: Summary: Bad script good actors Review: I liked the original Avengers and I liked this movie. The script was not a very good one, but the sexy-stilish-modern acting of Sean Connery and especially Uma Thurman was extraordinary. If you haven't seen the TV Series you surely won't get the feeling that comes with this movie and some "for insider" ones. Like the unvisible man which is ridiculus but from an original episode. The picture is clear and sharp as well as the bright colors from the cinema are displayed very well.
Rating: Summary: One of the Worst Movies of the year! Review: Don't bother wasting your money on this horribly-plotted, bad story film. The actors are fine, but the story is not smooth. It is very choppy in some parts that they don't make sense and there are unanswered questions in the film! Heck, I could have made a better story for the Avengers series.
Rating: Summary: What happened? Review: This movie goes down as one of the biggest lost oppertunites in the history of film. Ralph Finnes and Uma Thurman and Sean Connery all camping it up, great style, british accents, cool special effects, what could go wrong? Well... ever seen pictures of the hindenburg? The film gets an added star just because there were some sequences that worked, but it's an awful film. And I don't mean awful as in, a great awful movie like 'Batman and Robin' or 'Jack Frost'. Avengers is deathly dull. I mean, they even made Sean Connery boring!! What a waste.
